चाळीत बरीचशी माणसं नव्याने रहायला आलेली, पण 2-3 कुटुंब अजूनही तिथेच रहायची. त्यांना देवांग आणि आई बाबा भेटून आले. त्या सर्वांना खूप आनंद झालेला, देवांगला जास्त काही आठवत नव्हतं पण लहानपणीचे काही क्षण त्याला आठवत होते. आई बाबा एका घरात गप्पा मारत असतांना देवांगला बाहेर काहीतरी दिसलं आणि तो बाहेर आला. चाळीच्या बाहेर बसायला एक बाक होता. त्याचा रंग, लोखंडाची डिझाइन आणि ती जागा..काहीसं आठवू लागलं. तो हळूच मगच्या बाजूला गेला..बाकाच्या मागे D आणि V अशी अक्षरं कोरली होती. देवांगला पूर्ण आठवत नव्हतं.तेवढ्यात राजू दादाने मागुन पाठीवर हात ठेवला.

“काय रे…तिला विसरला नाहीस का अजून?”

देवांग या प्रश्नाने गोंधळून जातो.

“विसरायला मला लक्षातच कुठे काही होतं..”

“होका? अरे लहानपणी तुम्ही एकत्र खेळायचे, त्यात तुझ्या आजीच्या तोंडून निघालं की तुमच्या दोघांची लग्न पोटातच झालीये, तुमच्या मित्र मैत्रिणींनी काय हैदोस घातलेला ते ऐकून..ते तुम्हाला चिडवू लागले, तुमची नावं अशी बाकावर, भिंतींवर लिहू लागले.. वैदेही तर इतकी वैतागली की रडत रडत घरी जायची ती…तुला आठवत नाहीये?”

देवांगला यातले काही क्षण आठवले..

“जाऊदे ना दादा, कुठे जुन्या गोष्टी घेऊन बसलास…माझ्या ऑफिसमध्ये एक मुलगी आहे, सई म्हणून..तिच्याशी लग्न करतोय मी..”

“अरे पण..वैदेही आणि तुझं पटत नाही का? ब्रेकप झालंय का?”

“काहीही काय दादा, कोण ती वैदेही..चाळ सोडल्यानंतर तिला कधी भेटलोही नाही आणि बघितलंही नाही मी…”

“मग आता बघ..तुमची लग्न पोटात असतानाच झालीये, आणि हे बंधन वरूनच लिहून आलेलं असतं..त्यात बदल होत नसतो..या ना त्या मार्गाने तुमचेच बंध जुळणार बघ तू..”

देवांग नको नको म्हणत असला तरी त्याच्या मनात वैदेही बद्दल कुतूहल निर्माण झालंच होतं. आई बाबांनी एकाकडून वैदेहीच्या आईचा नंबर मिळवला आणि ते घरी गेले.

घरी येताच आईने त्या नंबरला फोन लावला…

“हॅलो..वैदेहीची आई,ओळखलं का…अगं मी मधुरा.. तुझी चाळीतली मैत्रीण..”

“हॅलो..हॅलो, आवाज येत नाहीये नीट..”

“हॅलो…बरं मला तुला भेटायचं आहे ,आणि वैदेहीला सुद्धा..मी पत्ता पाठवते, संध्याकाळी येशील का?”

“हो हो..येईन येईन..”

तिकडून वैदेहीच्या आईला फोनवर तुटक तुटक आवाज जात होता, पण भेटायचं आहे, पत्ता पाठवतो असं म्हटल्यावर वैदेहीच्या आईला क्लिक झालं, त्यांच्या नंदेने एक स्थळ सुचवलं होतं..त्यांच्याच फोन असणार!

“हॅलो वैदेही, अगं मुलाकडच्यांचा फोन आला होता. आपल्याला संध्याकाळीच बोलावलं आहे, पत्ता पाठवला आहे.. दोघींना जायचं आहे”

“बरं मी संध्याकाळी लवकर येईन..”

वैदेही संध्याकाळी लवकर घरी येते. मुलगा कोण आहे काय आहे काहीही न विचारता तयारी करते.आईच्या मोबाईल वर आलेला पत्ता एकदा बघून घेते. वैदेहीच्या आईला खूप वाईट वाटत होतं. त्या दोघी मायलेकी अश्या परिस्थितीत जगले होते की समोर जे आलं ते स्वीकारायचं अशी त्यांना सवयच पडलेली. त्यामुळे आयुष्याचा जोडीदार ठरवतानाही वैदेहीने कसलेही आढेवेढे घेतले नाही.

देवांगच्या मनात चलबिचल सुरू होती. सई फोन उचलत नव्हती, तिला काही सांगायची सोय नव्हती. कसं सांगणार की मला पाहायला मुलीकडचे येताय म्हणून? कोण कुठली ती वैदेही, का उगाच त्या मुलीला आस लावू मी?

देवांगने या सर्व विचारांपासून सुटका म्हणून भर दुपारी कॅनव्हास घेतला आणि चित्र चितारायला सुरवात केली. तिकडे आई बाबा तयारीला लागले, आजी आज चक्क पलंगावरून खाली उतरून हॉल मध्ये आवरत होती. आई बाबा आजीच्या या वागण्याने हैराण झालेले, एकीकडे त्यांना आनंदही झालेला की आजी वैदेहीच्या नावाने का असेना खुश झालेली, मन खुश असलं की शरीरही खुश असायचं..

देवांग दोन तास कॅनव्हास समोर होता, जेव्हा बाजूला झाला तेव्हा त्याने पाहिलं..जी ट्रेन त्याच्या चित्रात सतत रेखाटली जायची ती आज त्याला परत घ्यायला आलीये…ट्रेनच्या दारातून एक नाजूक हात बाहेर आलाय जो देवांगला या प्रवासासाठी सोबत घेण्यास आतुर आहे..

देवांग पुन्हा विचारात पडतो..”ही ट्रेन का सारखी येतेय माझ्या मनात?”

पुढे काही विचार करण्याआधीच आई त्याला हाक देते..

“देवांग, आवर रे..पाहुणे येतीलच थोडया वेळात”

देवांग चिडचिड करत हाताशी जे कपडे येतील ते घालतो आणि खुर्चीवर बसून बाहेर एकटक बघत बसतो.

तिकडे वैदेही आणि तिची आई पत्ता शोधत शोधत घरी येतात. दाराची बेल वाजते तसा देवांग भानावर येतो. पाहुणे खाली आलेत याची त्याला कल्पना आली आणि तो उठून पटकन खाली आला. आईने दार उघडलं, आधी वैदेहीची आई आत आली..मागून वैदेही..

देवांगने फक्त आई ला पाहिलं, मुलीला बघायची त्याची इच्छाच नव्हती. मनात सतत सईचा विचार घोळत होता. तिच्याशी प्रतारणा करणं त्याला पाप वाटत होतं. सई चं प्रेम स्वार्थी होतं, पण देवांग मनाचा साफ होता..त्याच्या शुद्ध आणि प्रेमळ नजरेनेच तो दुनिया बघत असे, म्हणून सई च्या स्वार्थी प्रेमाला तो खरं मानून बसला होता.

देवांगच्या आईने वैदेहीच्या आईला पाहिलं..दोघींच्याही डोळ्यात पाणी..काही काळ चाळीत दोघींनी आपापली सुखदुःख वाटली होती, आणि आज इतक्या वर्षांनी भेटल्यावर दोघींना अश्रू अनावर झाले.

“माझ्या नंदेने स्थळ सुचवलेलं..मला माहित नव्हतं की तूच.”

“नंदेने? अगं… मी चाळीत गेलेले..तुझा नंबर मागायला. तुम्हाला भेटायचं होतं.. स्थळ वगैरे …काय..काही समजलं नाही..”

वैदेहीची आई गोंधळात पडते..नंदेने स्थळ सुचवलेलं, म्हणाली की मुलाकडच्यांचा फोन येईल. आणि नंतर यांचा फोन आला, अरे देवा!!! म्हणजे मी यांच्या फोन ला स्थळ समजून बसले..

वैदेहीची आई डोक्यावर हात मारून घेते..वैदेहीलाही गोंधळ समजतो..तिला हसू येतं..

काही स्पष्टीकरण देण्याच्या आत वैदेही समोर येते..

“काकू, ओळखलं?”

“अगं माझी छकुली ती, किती मोठी झालीस गं.. लहानपणी घरभर उड्या मारत असायची.”

“हम्म..आणि देवांग सुद्धा..आहे कुठे तो?”

देवांग समोर आले वासून बसलेला..सुन्न झालेला…डोळ्यांवर विश्वास बसत नव्हता…

वैदेही.. तीच..

जी ट्रेनमध्ये भेटली होती..

जी सतत चित्रातून डोकावत होती…

जी मनाच्या कोपऱ्यातुन सतत डोकावू पाहत होती..

आणि जीच्याशी लहानपणीच लग्न झालं होतं..!!!
