देवांगला झोपेत सतत बाबांनी सांगितलेलं आठवायचं, आजीने आपले हट्ट पुरवण्यासाठी किती काय काय केलेलं, पण आजीचा हा हट्ट म्हणजे…जाऊदेत, सई समोर येईल तेव्हा सांगेन की हीच आहे वैदेही..

पूर्ण आठवडा देवांगने याच टेन्शन मध्ये घालवला, अखेर शनिवारी, जेव्हा ऑफिसला सुट्टी होती तेव्हा सई देवांगला भेटण्यासाठी घरी आली.

देवांगने तिला सगळं नीट समजावलं होतं. आजीसमोर तुझं नाव वैदेही आहे हेच सांगायचं, आपण बालपणीचे मित्र आहोत, आपली लहानपणीच ओळख झाली होती असं लक्षात ठेवायचं..देवांगने तिला हे सगळं काळजीपूर्वक तिला समजावलं.

सईला खरं तर या सर्वाचा कंटाळा आलेला, उगाच चांगला सुट्टीचा दिवस शॉपिंग मध्ये घालवायच्या ऐवजी इथे आजीसमोर नाटक करायचं. कधी एकदाचं इथलं काम होतं आणि परत जाते असं तिला झालेलं.

देवांगच्या आईने सुनेबद्दल स्वप्न रंगवली होती. समजूतदार, सोज्ज्वळ..सई जेव्हा घरी आली तेव्हा आल्या आल्या तिने देवांगला मिठी मारलेली. घरी बाकीची लोकं आहेत याचा तिला फरक पडत नव्हता, उलट देवांगच ओशाळला. त्याने तिला पटकन दूर केलं. नव्या जमान्याची मुलं आहेत म्हणून आई बाबांनीही सोडून दिलं. देवांगशी बोलून झालं आणि ती मटकन सोफ्यावर बसली,

“देवांग प्लिज फॅन सुरू कर ना, फार गरम होतंय”

देवांगच्या आई बाबांना ती पहिल्यांदा भेटत होती पण साधं पहिलंही नाही तिने त्यांच्याकडे. शेवटी देवांग स्वतःहून म्हणाला,

“अगं आई बाबांना भेटून घे..हे माझे बाबा, ही आई”

देवांगने बोलता बोलता तिला “काय हे?” असा सूचक इशारा केला तेव्हा ती उठून उभी राहिली.

“ओह सॉरी सॉरी…हॅलो, मी सई. कोण आहे हे तुम्हाला माहितीच आहे..”

असं म्हणत ती हसायला लागली आणि तिने परत बसुन घेतलं. आईला जरा विचित्र वाटलं. आपल्या मुलाने खरंच हिलाच पसंत केलंय का हा प्रश्न त्यांना पडला. आई आत गेली, मागोमाग बाबाही गेले. आईचा चेहरा बघून बाबा समजवणीच्या सुरात म्हणाले..

“अगं ही नवीन पिढी आहे, स्वतंत्र जगण्याची सवय असते यांना”

“तुम्हाला आठवतंय? मी जेव्हा पहिल्यांदा तुमच्या घरी आलेले, तेव्हा आधी माईंचा पाया पडले..डोक्यावर पदर घेऊन त्यांच्या मागोमाग स्वयंपाकघरात गेले आणि तत्क्षणी सगळी जबाबदारी घेतली. हिनेही एवढं करावं असं मी म्हणत नाहीये, पण पहिल्यांदा ही आपल्याला भेटतेय, आपल्या होणाऱ्या नवऱ्याच्या आई बाबांना..तेव्हा निदान बोलायला तरी हवं ना..”

“हे बघ, आतापासूनच सासुपणाचा आव आणू नकोस. असंही ती दोघे बाहेर राहतील, आपल्याजवळ नाही..तेव्हा दोघांना काय करायचं ते करू देत..”

“प्रश्न जवळ किंवा दूर राहण्याचा आणि मला काय वाटतं याचा नाहीच आहे..घराचे संस्कार, रीती, पद्धती पुढे घेऊन जाण्याचं काम स्त्री करत असते..हा वारसा सासुकडून सुनेला जात असतो. सून जवळ असेल तर सासू तिला चार गोष्टी शिकवते, दूर असेल तर सून किमान आपल्या घराला मांगल्य प्राप्त होईल असं तरी वातावरण बनवते..पण हिने उद्या माझ्या देवांगच्या घराला ते मांगल्य दिलं नाही तर? घराला घरपण दिलं नाही तर? माणसाचं काय हो, आई किंवा बायको.. घराच्या बाबतीत ती म्हणेल ती पूर्व दिशा असं समजतात..तेव्हा तिनेच पुढाकार घेऊन घराला घर बनवायचं असतं..”

त्यांचं बोलणं सुरू असतानाच आतून आजीचा आवाज आला..

“वैदेही आली का??”

देवांग सई ला घेऊन आत गेला, जाण्याच्या आधी दारातच इशारा केला की सांगितलेलं सगळं लक्षात ठेव. मागोमाग आई बाबाही गेले.

सईला समोर करून देवांग म्हणाला,

“आजी, ही बघ..वैदेही”

आजीने तिला नीट निरखून पाहिलं. तिच्या चेहऱ्यावर हास्य उमटलं. आजीचे ते हावभाव पाहून सर्वांना हायसं वाटलं. चला, आजीने सईलाच अखेर वैदेही मानलं तर !

आजीने सईला जवळ बोलावलं. होणाऱ्या सुनेची दृष्ट काढणार वाटतं आजी असं सर्वांना वाटलं. सई उसनं हसू आणत आजी जवळ गेली..

“सटाक…” आजीने झोपल्या झोपल्या तिला कानाखाली चपराक ओढली..

“कोण गं तू भवाने? देवांगचं लग्न वैदेही सोबत झालंय.. आणि तू कोण आली मधेच अवदसा? तू वैदेही नाही..देवा..फसवतोस का रे तुझ्या आजीला? अरे वय झालंय, पण डोकं शाबूत आहे माझं..ही वैदेही नाही…जा, तिला घेऊन ये..”

सर्वजण जीव मुठीत घेऊन बाहेर पळाले..सईचे तर डोळे लाल झाले होते, हे सगळं अगदी अनपेक्षित होतं. ती देवांगवर ओरडली..

“असा अपमान करून घेण्यासाठी तू मला इथे बोलावलं? येते मी”

असं म्हणत सई रागारागाने निघून गेली. देवांग तिला थांबवू बघत होता पण तिने एक ऐकलं नाही. इकडे घरात तणावाचं वातावरण झालं. सर्वजण सोफ्यावर मान खाली घालून बसले. आतुन आजीचा शिवीगाळ बाहेरपर्यंत ऐकू येत होता. तो ऐकून सर्वजण अजूनच खजील व्हायचे.

शेवटी बाबा मन घट्ट करून म्हणाले,

“आता वैदेहीला बोलवावंच लागेल”

“बाबा? काय बोलताय तुम्ही? मला सई सोबत लग्न करायचं आहे. वैदेहीला बोलावून काय करणार? कशाला आता हे सगळं?”

“ऐक माझं, आजीची कदाचित ईच्छा असेल की वैदेहीला बघावं..ती कशी असेल, काय असेल काहीच कल्पना नाही आपल्याला.. कदाचित तिचं लग्नही झालं असेल..ती एकदा का आजीला भेटली की कदाचित आजीला वाटेल की ही मुलगी आता तुझ्यासाठी योग्य नाही ते”

“आणि आजीला वाटलं की हीच योग्य आहे, तर?”

“पुढचं पुढे. आधी वैदेही ला बोलावून घेऊ”

देवांग काहीही ऐकण्याच्या मनस्थितीत नव्हता. तो तिथून उठला आणि खोलीत गेला. जाता जाता म्हणाला, “आता तुम्हाला काय करायचं ते करा..”

इकडे आई बाबा आपापसात बोलू लागले..

“वैदेही कुठे असेल हो आता? कसा संपर्क करायचा तिला?”
