देवांग आणि त्या मुलीचा ट्रेनमधील एकत्र प्रवास दोघांनाही सुखद वाटत होता. एरवी एवढा मोठा प्रवास करताना देवांग कंटाळून जाई, पण यावेळी मात्र काहीतरी वेगळंच होतं. ट्रेनच्या त्या कंपार्टमेंट मध्ये दोघेही आपापसात सुंदर संवाद साधत होते.

“मी एका सॉफ्टवेअर कंपनीत टेस्टर म्हणून काम करतेय, माझं काम तसं किचकटच. डेव्हलपरने केलेल्या चुका त्यांना दाखवून द्यायच्या आणि त्या दुरुस्त करून घ्यायच्या असं माझं काम. त्यामुळे जवळपास सर्व डेव्हलपरचा आणि माझा छत्तीसचा आकडा. आपण केलेलं काम चूक आहे हे कुणी सांगितलं तर कुणालाही राग येणारच ना ! पण कामच आहे ते माझं.”

असं म्हणत दोघांनी पाठ फिरवली आणि आपापल्या दिशेने दोघेही चालू लागले. चालतांना का कुणास ठाऊक पण दोघांची पावलं मंद गतीने पडत होती. जणू हा भेटीचा सोहळा अखंड सुरू राहावा असंच त्यांच्या मनाला वाटत होतं. सोहळाच होता तो ! पुढे जे घडणार होतं त्याची ही सुरवात होती. पुढे गेल्यावर देवांगने पुन्हा मान वाळवून मागे पाहिलं. ती मुलगी सुद्धा तशीच मागे वळून पहात होती. दोघेही घाबरले, काय वाटलं असेल समोरच्याला? आणि पटकन फिरून आपापल्या वाटेने सरळ चालू लागले.

“माझं नाव तर मी सांगितलं, पण तिचं नाव विचारलंच नाही, किती वेडा आहे मी”

त्याचं मन आता विचार करू लागलं. त्या मुलीत असं काय होतं जे मी डोक्यातून विसरू शकत नाहीये? त्याचं मन उगाच त्या सईशी या मुलीची तुलना करू लागलं. सईने मला बोलतं केलं, माझ्यासारख्या अबोल मुलात चैतन्य भरलं..पण त्याला कितीतरी वेळ लागला होता. या मुलीने अशी काय जादू केली की ज्याने पहिल्याच भेटीत माझ्यातल्या मला बाहेर काढलं? हे काय विचार करतोय मी, माझी बुद्धी भ्रष्ट झालीये…एक मुलगी काय भेटली, तू सईला विसरून चाललास? तुझं लग्न होणार आहे त्या सई सोबत, तू या मुलीशी बोलायला सुद्धा नको होतंस.

देवांग भानावर आला, वास्तवासोबत समरस झाला. काही वेळाने त्याचं घर आलं. आई बाबा त्याची वाटच बघत होते. खूप दिवसांनी देवांग घरी आला होता. आईचे डोळे त्याला बघून भरून आलेले. बाबा सुद्धा त्याच्याकडे एकटक बघत राहिले.

“आजीला भेटतो आधी”

या सर्वांच्या गप्पा चालू असतानाच आजीच्या खोलीतून आवाज आला आणि सर्वजण त्या दिशेने पळाले. आजी काहीतरी बोलत होती, सर्वजण लक्ष देऊन ऐकू लागले..

“देव…लग्न करून घे..”

“हो आजी, करणार आहे, लवकरच..”

देवांग आई वडिलांकडे बघतो, सई बद्दल आजीला सांगायची हीच वेळ योग्य आहे हे तिघांनी खुणेनेच ठरवलं..आता आजीला सई बद्दल सांगावं आणि लवकरच तो आणि सई लग्न करणार हे सांगायला त्याने पहिला स्वर काढला तोच….

“वैदेहीला बोलवून घे…वैदेहीला कळवा…लवकर..” आजी धाप टाकत बोलू लागली.

देवांग आई वडिलांकडे बघू लागला..ही वैदेही कोण? आणि तिला का बोलवायचं म्हणताय?
