रजत पवार.. देवांग जगात एकमेव कुणाचा द्वेष करत असेल तर तो होता रजत..

(8 वर्षांपूर्वी)

कॉलेज सोडून देवांगने नुकत्याच नोकरीच्या शोधात बाहेर मुलाखती देण्यास सुरुवात केल्या होत्या. एका मोठ्या इव्हेंट कंपनी कडून त्याला मूलखतीसाठी बोलावण्यात आलं होतं. ही कंपनी मोठमोठ्या कंपन्यांचे इव्हेंट्स मॅनेज करत असे. त्यात क्रिएटिव्ह गोष्टी आणण्यासाठी त्यांना एक ग्राफिक डिझायनर हवा होता, त्यासाठीच देवांग तिकडे गेलेला.

मुलाखतीसाठी अनेकजण आलेले, देवांगचा नंबर बऱ्याच उशिराने लागला. त्याचा नंबर येताच पिऊन ने त्याला आत बोलावलं. तो आत गेला, समोर खुर्चीवर कंपनीचा मुख्य अधिकारी रजत पवार त्याच्या अहंकारी रुपात खुर्चीवर जरासा तिरपा होऊन पायाची घडी घालून बसलेला. देवांग आत जाताच त्याने एक कंटाळवाणा कटाक्ष टाकला. देवांगने नम्रपणे त्याला हाय हॅलो केले आणि आपला resume समोर ठेवला. रजतने तो बघितला,

“तर तुम्हीं ग्राफिक डिझाइन मध्ये शिक्षण घेतलंय, काही अनुभव?”

“सर मी आताच कॉलेजमधून बाहेर पडलोय, आवड म्हणून शेवटच्या वर्षी मी हा कोर्स केला, काही डिझाइन्स सुद्धा बनवलेत, मी चित्रकारही आहे. Resume च्या शेवटी माझ्या पेंटिंग ची फोटो आहेत एकदा बघा प्लिज”

रजतने पेंटिंग पाहिल्या, पेंटिंग सुंदर होत्या पण रजत कलासक्त माणूस नव्हता. कलेतला क त्याला माहित नव्हता. पेंटिंग बघून तो हसायला लागला..

“हा हा..हे काय काढलं आहे? ही झाडं.. डोंगर..पक्षी..आपल्याला इव्हेंट मध्ये हे असलं काही डिझाइन करायचं नाहीये..”

“सर हे माझं छंद म्हणून केलंय, तुम्हाला हव्या तश्या डिझाइन मी बनवून देईन”

“अरे नुकताच पास झालेला तू.. तुला जमेल असं मला वाटत नाही”

“सर तुम्हाला काय अपेक्षा आहेत हे समजलं तर मी explain करू शकेन”

रजतला मुलाखत घ्यायचा कंटाळा आलेला असतो, त्याने आधीच त्याच्या ओळखीतल्या एकाला जॉब देण्याचे पक्के केलेले असते, पण कंपनीचा नियम म्हणून हा फक्त दिखावा होता. देवांगला रिजेक्ट करण्यासाठी काहीतरी कारण हवं होतं.

“हे बघ, आमची इव्हेंट मॅनेजमेंट कंपनी आहे, इथे मॉडर्न डिझाइन्स, मॉडर्न चित्र डिझाइन करणारे हवेत, मला वाटतं तुम्ही आमच्या नोकरीसाठी फिट नाही, या तुम्ही !”

देवांग नम्रपणे नकार स्वीकार करतो आणि थँक्स म्हणत जायला निघतो, रजत पुटपुटतो..

“काळे पिवळे रंग फिरवतात अन म्हणतात आम्ही आर्टिस्ट आहोत, कुठून येतात काय माहीत”

हे वाक्य ऐकून देवांग तिथेच थबकतो, मागे वळतो आणि प्रतिप्रश्न करतो.

“सर आर्टिस्ट बद्दल काय माहित आहे तुम्हाला?”

“तुला कुणी थांबवलं? निघ ना तू”

देवांगचा आता मात्र तिळपापड होतो,

“हे बघा, तुम्ही कितीही मोठ्या हुद्द्यावर असलात तरी एखाद्या कलाकाराचा असा अपमान करणं म्हणजे दैवी देणगीचा अपमान करणं आहे. मी नोकरी मागायला आलोय, भीक नाही..त्यामुळे नसेल काम द्यायचं तर नम्रतेने बोला”

हे ऐकून रजत चवताळतो, पहिल्यांदा त्याच्याशी असं कुणीतरी बोललं होतं.

“ए..ए..ए..लायकी तरी आहे का तुझी इथे उभं राहायची..मला शिकवतोय, निघतो की हाकलून लावू?”

“तुम्ही तुमची काळजी करा सर, माझ्यासोबत माझी कला आहे पोट भरण्यासाठी, उद्या तुमच्या कंपनीला काम मिळणं बंद झालं तर भिकारी तुम्ही व्हाल, मी नाही..”

रजत चवताळून देवांगच्या अंगावर धावून येतो, दोघांमध्ये झटापट होते. काही वेळाने सिक्युरिटी गार्ड्स ने मध्यस्थी करून दोघांना बाजूला केले.

देवांग आयुष्यात पहिल्यांदा इतका चवताळला होता. त्याच्या कलेचा अपमान त्याला सहन झाला नव्हता. तेवढा तो एकच व्यक्ती देवांगचा शत्रू.

तिकडे देवांगच्या घरी आजीला एकेक खबर समजत होती, देवांगने वैदेहीला नकार दिला हेही तिला समजलं, आई वडिलांना खरं तर माहीत होतं की हेच होणार, पण तेही नाराज झाले. त्या सई साठी देवांग उगाच इतक्या चांगल्या मुलीला नाकारतोय असं त्यांना वाटलं…

आजी आता शांत बसणार नव्हती, तिने देवांगला बोलावून घेतलं आणि जाब विचारला. देवांगने खूप विचार केला आणि शेवटी आजीला सगळं खरं खरं सांगून टाकलं..

“आजी, माझं सई नावाच्या एका मुलीवर प्रेम आहे. मी तिच्याशीच लग्न करणार आहे. असं दुसरीशी लग्न करून मी तिला नाही फसवू शकत”

आजीने सगळं ऐकून घेतलं आणि देवांगला समजावलं..

“तू सई ला नाही, वैदेहीला फसवतोय. अरे तुमच्या गाठी फार पूर्वीच जोडल्या गेल्या आहेत, पोटात असताना लग्न लागलं हे जरी अल्लड वाटत असलं तरी त्यामागे काहीतरी दैवलेख होता. दैवाची तशी रचना होती, मनाने, शरीराने तुम्ही कधी एकत्र आले नसलात तरी एका अदृश्य शक्तीने तुमचं मिलन घडवून आणलंय. तू काहीही कर, नशीब तुम्हाला एकत्र आणेल हे नक्की..!!”

आजीचा विश्वास पाहून देवांगच्या मनाची चलबिचल झाली. पोटात लग्न झालेलं त्याला आठवत नसलं तरी जेव्हापासून त्याला समजलं की वैदेही आणि त्याचं असं लग्न झालंय तेव्हापासून त्याच्या मनाची अवस्था बिघडली होती. एकीकडे भूतकाळ आणि दुसरीकडे वास्तव. वास्तवाला धरून चालायचं होतं पण भूतकाळाचे ठरवलेल्या गोष्टीही त्याला आता अस्वस्थ करत होत्या.

“वैदेही झालं का आवरून? मुलाकडे जायचं आहे आपल्याला”

“हो आई झालं, कशी दिसतेय मी?”

तिची ती तत्परता बघून आईला भरून आलं.

“वैदेही तू खुश आहेस ना? कशालाही आढेवेढे घेत नाहीये तू, मुलगा जो समोर येईल त्याला स्वीकारण्याची तयारी दाखवते आहेस, खरंच तुला काहीच वाटत नाहीये का? तुला देवांग आवडला होता का? परिस्थितीने तुला खंबीर बनवलं हे खरं, पण त्यामुळे आयुष्याचा निर्णय चुकायला नको असंच वाटतं गं मला”

“नाही गं आई. तुम्ही जो मुलगा बघाल तो मला पसंत असेल, आणि का आढेवेढे घेऊ मी उगाच? माझ्या फार काही अपेक्षा नाहीत”

आईने डोळे पुसले, दोघीही मुलाकडे जायला निघाल्या, वाटेत आत्याला सोबत घेतलं. मुलाचं घर येतं, तिघीही रिक्षातून उतरतात, समोर असलेला बंगला बघून त्यांचे डोळेच दिपतात. आलिशान बंगला, बाहेर 3 चारचाकी गाड्या, गेटवर सिक्युरिटी गार्ड, भलीमोठी जागा..आई आणि आत्या तिथेच थबकतात.

“आई, आत्या..जायचं ना?”

तिघीही आत जातात. मुलाची आई त्यांचं स्वागत करते. तिघींना हॉल मध्ये बसवते आणि मुलाला बोलवायला आत जाते. आतून आवाज येतो,

“काय गं आई, पडू दे ना जरा”

“अरे मुलीकडचे आलेत, तुला तयार व्हायला सांगितलेलं ना? तू दार लावून घेतलंस मला वाटलं तयारी करतोय..”

“अरे काय यार..बरं आलो चल..”

मुलगा घरातल्या कपड्यातच बाहेर येतो. त्याच्या चेहऱ्यावर मरगळ असते, पाहुण्यांसमोर कसं यावं आणि तेही मुलीकडचे आल्यावर याचंही भान त्याला नव्हतं. त्याची आई सावरून घेते,

“ऑफिसमध्ये काल रात्री उशिरापर्यंत थांबला ना, म्हणून जरा पडला होता”

“असुदेत हो, इतकी मोठी कंपनी सांभाळायची म्हणजे मेहनत असतेच” आत्या म्हणाली.

वैदेहीने मुलाकडे पाहिलं, त्याचं वागणं बरोबर नव्हतं. पण आई आणि आत्याच्या चेहऱ्यावरचा आनंद तिच्या नजरेतून सुटत नव्हता. दोघीही घरची श्रीमंती पाहून हुरळून गेल्या होत्या. मुलाने वैदेहीकडे पाहिलं, त्याला ती दिसताक्षणी आवडली. सुंदरच इतकी होती ती, काय करणार..! तिच्या सुंदरतेपुढे क्षणभर तो स्वतःचा अहंकार विसरून गेलेला. माणूस कसाही असला तरी प्रेम त्याला झुकवतंच.

जुजबी बोलणं झाल्यानंतर दोघांना बोलण्यासाठी बाहेर पाठवलं गेलं.

वैदेहीने बोलायला सुरुवात केली,

“मी वैदेही, एका सॉफ्टवेअर कंपनीत टेस्टिंग चं काम करते”

“मी रजत पवार…”
