क्लिनिकमधून परतल्यानंतर रीमाने काहीवेळ आराम केला आणि ती किचनमध्ये गेली. स्वयंपाक तयारच होता, ती हिरमुसली..तिला आज मोबाईल मध्ये पाहिलेली नवीन रेसिपी ट्राय करायची होती, पण सासूबाईंनी आधीच सगळं तयार ठेवलं होतं. सर्वांनी मिळून जेवणं केली. रीमाने ओटा पुसायला घेतला तोच तिला क्लिनिकमधून फोन..

“हॅलो, रीमा उद्या काही सर्जरी आहेत, डॉक्टर मकरंद येणार आहेत पुण्याहून, तुम्ही सोबत असणार का? नाही म्हणजे तुम्हाला अनुभव येईल एक्सपर्ट डॉक्टरांच्या हाताखाली काम करण्याचा..”

“सॉरी डॉक्टर, पण उद्या मला रजा हवी आहे…नुकतंच लग्न झालंय सर माझं आणि उद्या दसरा आहे..घरात थोडं पहावं लागेल”

“हरकत नाही मॅडम, रजा घ्या उद्या..एन्जॉय”

रीमाने फोन ठेवला आणि ती परत तिच्या कामाला लागली. दुसऱ्या दिवशी दसरा, नवऱ्याकडून तिने बरंच ऐकलेलं की दसऱ्याला घरात बरीच कामं असतात..नैवेद्य, पूजा, मंत्रजप वगैरे. लग्नानंतरचा पहिला सण म्हणून रीमा ला कसलीच कसर सोडायची नव्हती. सासूबाई लवकर झोपी गेलेल्या नेहमीप्रमाणे, त्यामुळे उद्या काय करायचं याची तिला कल्पना नव्हती. मात्र उद्या लवकर उठुया आणि अंघोळ करून सासूबाईंना मदत करूया असं तिने ठरवलं.

दुसऱ्या दिवशी अलार्म लावून ती उठली, तयार होऊन किचनमध्ये गेली. सासूबाई पुरण दळत होत्या.

“आई मी करू?”

“नको, असुदेत”

सासूबाईंचा सूर तिला नाराज वाटला. काही चुकलं का आपलं? की मलाच चुकीचं वाटतंय? तिने बाहेर रांगोळी काढली आणि आत आली. सासूबाई रांगोळी बघतील, कौतुक करतील असं तिला वाटलेलं, पण त्या काहीच बोलत नव्हत्या. काहीतरी नक्कीच बिनसलं होतं. इतर कामांनाही त्यांनी रीमाला हात लावू दिला नाही आणि तिने काही विचारलं तर नीट उत्तरही दिलं नाही. रीमाला कळत नव्हतं की माझं नक्की काय चुकलं? मी सुट्टी घेतली, सकाळी लवकर उठून तयार झाले, आईंना मदत करायला आले…यात कुठे चूकतोय आपण?

दुपार झाली, सासूबाईंनी सर्वांना आपापली शस्त्र समोर मांडलेल्या पाटावर ठेवायला लावली. शस्त्र म्हणजेच आपापल्या कर्मभूमीत वापरली जाणारी साधनं. रीमाच्या नवऱ्याचा बिझनेस होता, इंटेरिअरचा..त्याने लॅपटॉप, स्टेशनरी समोर आणून ठेवली. सासऱ्यांनी त्यांची वही पेन आणि सासूबाईंनी त्यांचा आवडत्या छंदाची साधनं समोर ठेवली. रीमा फक्त बघत राहिली..सासूबाईंनी रागाने।तिच्याकडे पाहिलं..ती उभीच..मख्ख बाईसारखी.. सासूबाई आत गेल्या आणि।तिच्या खोलीतून तिचा स्टेथस्कोप, bp चेकर मशीन आणि इतर काही गोष्टी आणल्या. रीमाने जीभ चावली..

“अरे एवढं पण सुचलं नाही आपल्याला, श्या..”

पूजा झाली, जेवणं झाली. रीमाने दणकून पुरणपोळी खाल्ली आणि आता ती पेंगायला लागली.

“आता दुपारी अशी मस्त झोप लागेन ना..” ती नवऱ्याला सांगू लागली.

सासूबाईंचा संयम सुटला..त्या तणतणत तिच्याकडे आल्या आणि म्हणाल्या..

“यासाठी सुट्टी घेतलीस तू? डॉक्टर आहेस ना तू? काल तुला फोन आलेला तेव्हा ऐकलं मी..सणासाठी सुट्टी घेतलीस तू. तुझ्यासारख्या डॉक्टर मुलीने सेववृत्तीला अग्रस्थानी ठेवायला हवं..मला हे अजिबात पटलेलं नाही. यापुढे अश्या कारणांसाठी सुट्ट्या घ्यायच्या नाहीत”

सासूबाई निघून गेल्या. तिला आत्ता लक्षात आलं, सासूबाई का नाराज होत्या ते. तिला कमालच वाटली, इतर ठिकाणी सासवा सणावाराला सुनेला नुसती पळापळ करायला लावतात, पण इथे मात्र भलतंच. मी क्लिनिकला गेले नाही म्हणून सासूबाई रागावल्या.

रिमाला मधेच हसू येई, मधेच वाईट वाटे. तिची ही अवस्था पाहून रमेश..तिचा नवरा तिच्या जवळ आला आणि म्हणाला..

“समजलं ना आता आई का चिडली ते? यापुढे तुझ्या कर्तव्यापासून कधीही चुकू नकोस”

“हो…मला खरंच माहीत नव्हतं की आईंना या गोष्टीचा राग येईल..”

“आईला तुझ्या कामाचं महत्व माहीत आहे. तिच्या बाबतीत हे खूप आधी घडलं होतं. माझे आजोबा दवाखान्यात होते, अचानक त्यांना जास्त त्रास होऊ लागला पण नेमकं त्यावेळी डॉक्टर तिथे उपस्थित नव्हते. डोळ्यासमोर आईने आजोबांना तडफडतांना पाहिलं. डॉक्टरचं काम किती तात्पर हवं हे तिला समजलं. काल तू क्लिनिकला जायला नाही म्हणालीस तेव्हा आईला तुझ्या वागण्याचा राग आला. घर, संसार यापेक्षा तुझं कर्तव्य महत्वाचं. आमच्या सेवेपेक्षा समाजातील गरजू रुग्णांची सेवा महत्वाची,त्यामुळे अशी चूक पुन्हा करू नकोस, तू एकवेळ घरकामात चुकलीस तर काही बोलणार नाही, पण आज सुट्टी घेते म्हटलीस तर तुझा सासुरवास पक्का”

सासूबाईंच्या या वागण्याने रीमा खरंच सुखावली. कुटुंबीयांनी त्यांच्याप्रमाणेच त्यांच्या लेकी/सुनेच्या कामाला महत्व दिलं, त्याचा सन्मान केला तर प्रत्येक घरातील चित्र हमखास बदलेल.
