खेळ मांडला (भाग 4)

आरोहीच्या आईच्या मनात खळबळ माजली होती, आरोहीच्या वडिलांचे शब्द तिच्या कानात घुमत होते..

“ना मानवला नकार दिला असता, ना आरोहीला गावी पाठवलं असतं ना तिचा अपघात झाला असता.”

आरोहीच्या या स्थितीला आपणच कारणीभूत आहोत याची सल आईला बोचू लागली. पण कसं लावून देणार होतो आरोहीचं लग्न मानवशी? आपल्या नातेवाईकात आपली इतकी प्रतिष्ठा धुळीस मिळाली असती. पंधरा वर्षांपूर्वीचा काळ आईला आठवला..

“आई..दारावर कुणीतरी आलंय..”

“उघडतेस का दार? मी कणिक मळतेय…”

आरोही अभ्यासातून उठून दार उघडते, समोर तिने मानवला पाहिलं आणि तिचं भानच हरपलं. शुभ्र फॉर्मल शर्ट, गडद काळ्या रंगाची जीन्स, त्या शुभ्र शर्टमध्ये अजून चकाकणारा त्याचा गोरा रंग, हवेत भुरभुरनारे दाट केस आणि गहन काहीतरी सांगणारे तपकिरी डोळे. “सपनो का राजकुमार” म्हटल्यावर जो चेहरा डोळ्यासमोर येतो तो हाच.

“हॅलो मॅडम..” त्याने आवाज देताच आरोही भानावर आली,

“ह..ह..हॅलो…कोण बोलतंय??”

मानवने मोठ्या मुश्किलीने हसू दाबलं. गोंधळ उडालेल्या आरोहीला आपण काय बोलून गेलो, हे फोनवरचं हॅलो नव्हतं हे लक्षात आलं अन ती ओशाळली. आपल्याला हसू आलंच नाही असं दाखवत मानवने बोलायला सुरुवात केली..

“नमस्कार, मी मानव.. काही प्रॉडक्ट्स घेऊन आलोय..”

प्रोडक्ट ऐकताच आई बाहेर आली..

“हे बघा आम्हाला अजिबात वेळ नाहीये आणि काहीही नकोय आम्हाला..”

हे ऐकताच आरोही एकदम खट्टू झाली, “इतका हँडसम मुलगा एक साधा सेल्समन? याला एखाद्या फिल्म मध्ये किंवा मॉडेलिंग मध्ये असायला हवं होतं..” ती मनाशीच बोलली..

“माहीत आहे मॅडम, अन्न, वस्त्र आणि निवारा या गरजा सोडल्या तर बाकीचे खर्च वायफळ असतात, माणसाला गरजा वाढवता नाही तर कमी करता आल्या पाहिजेत. सोशल स्टेटस साठी किंवा भुरळ पडून कितीतरी निरुपयोगी वस्तू आपण विकत घेतो, या सगळ्याचा हिशोब केला तर लक्षात येईल आपण किती वायफळ खर्च केलाय ते..”

मानव जे बोलला ते काटकसरी असलेल्या आईला एकदम पटलं. क्षणापूर्वी हाकलून द्यायची भाषा करणाऱ्या आईचं मन एकदम वळलं आणि का कोण जाणे आईने मानवला घरात बोलावलं.

“इतकी शुद्ध भाषा आणि असा युक्तिवाद? हा मुलगा साधासुधा दिसत नाहीये..” आरोहीने चटकन ओळखलं.

“चांगल्या घरचा दिसतोस, सेल्समन चं काम कसं पकडलंस?” आईने विचारलं..

“अहो नाही नाही, मी टॉप कॉलेज मध्ये MBA करतोय मार्केटिंग मध्ये, आम्हाला हा एक प्रोजेक्ट असतो, घरोघरी जाऊन प्रोडक्ट मार्केटिंग करायचं..”

“मग काय आणलं आहेस तू?”

मानव हळूच बॅगेतून काही लिक्विड काढतो,

“हे बघा, माणसाला चांगलं जगण्यासाठी स्वच्छता प्रिय असते, म्हणूनच हे बाथरूम क्लिनर..तसं पाहिलं तर बाजारात ब्रँडेड लिक्विड मिळतात, जाहिरातीत आपण बघतोच पण त्यात अनेक विषारी केमिकल असतात जे आपल्यालाही घातक असतात आणि कालांतराने फरशीही खराब करतात, हे लिक्विड पूर्णपणे नैसर्गिक साधनांनी बनले आहे आणि किंमतही अगदी कमी. महागडी क्लिनर घेऊन लिक्विड वर तसंच बाथरूमच्या टाईल्स बदलण्यात पैसा घालवणं म्हणजे हात दाखवून अवलकक्षण असंच आहे..”

मानवची हुशारी त्याच्या बोलण्यातून झळकली, इतका हँडसम असणाऱ्या मुलाला डोकंही चांगलं आहे लक्षात येताच आरोही अजून त्याच्याजवळ खेचली गेली. आईला मानवचा मुद्दा पटला आणि तिने लगेच 4 बोटल्स विकत घेतल्या. मानव खुश झाला,

“चला येतो मी..”

“बाळा एवढ्या उन्हाचा फिरतोय, चहा पाणी घेतोस का?”

“खरं तर खूप तहान लागलीये, एक ग्लास पाणी द्या फक्त, तुम्ही विचारलं ते बरं वाटलं..”

“बरं, तुझं वय काय रे?”

“तेवीस..”

“आणि नोकरीचं काय?”

“आता MBA पास झालो की मोठ्या कंपनीत चांगली नोकरी मिळेल, 10-15 लाखांचं पॅकेज असेल..”

हे ऐकताच आईच्या डोक्यात वेगळेच विचार सुरू झाले..

“घरी कोण असतं?”

“आई, बाबा आणि मी..एकुलता एक आहे..मुंबईत घर आहे स्वतःचं, पण माझ्या शिक्षणासाठी इथे नाशिकला राहतोय..इथेही बंगला आहे आमचा..”

“बाळा पूर्ण नाव काय तुझं?”

मानव त्याचं पूर्ण नाव सांगतो, मानवची जात कुठली आहे हेच आईला माहिती करून घ्यायचं होतं. आईने आडनाव आणि इतर माहितीच्या आधारे अंदाज लावला आणि तिच्या लक्षात आलं की मानव वेगळ्या आणि त्यातल्या त्यात खालच्या जातीचा आहे ते.. आई निराश झाली. खरं तर हा जातीत असता तर आरोही साठी मानवलाच विचारावं असं आईला वाटू लागलेलं पण जात समजली अन आईने सर्व विचार धुडकावून लावले.

“ठीक आहे काकू येतो मी..”

“हो..”

आईने कोरडेपणानेच उत्तर दिलं. आरोहीला मात्र मानवने अजून काहीवेळ बसावं असं वाटू लागलेलं. त्या काही मिनिटात आरोही स्वतःचं हृदय त्याला देऊन बसलेली. मानव जाऊ लागला, पण पुन्हा त्याची भेट कशी होईल? आईसमोर बोलण्याची आरोहीची हिम्मत नव्हती. मानव अगदी नजरेआड होईपर्यंत त्याला पाठमोरी बघत होती.

नंतर बरेच दिवस आरोही मानवला आठवत होती, देवाने पुन्हा एकदा त्याच्याशी भेट घडवून आणावी असं तिला वाटायचं. पण भेट झाली नाही. हळूहळू त्याची आठवण पुसट होत गेली. आरोहीचं शेवटचं वर्ष बाकी होतं. तरी कॉलेजमध्ये प्लेसमेंट साठी कंपन्या येऊ लागलेल्या. आरोही हुशारच होती, तिचं संवाद कौशल्य उत्तम होतं त्यामुळे एका कंपनीने तिला मुलाखतीसाठी बोलावलं.

आरोही तयारीनिशी कंपनीत गेली. बाहेर बरेच उमेदवार मुलाखतीसाठी ताटकळत बसले होते. आरोही त्यांच्यात बसलेली,  तिथे साफसफाई करणाऱ्या एक म्हाताऱ्या आजी आल्या आणि झाडू मारू लागल्या. मध्ये एकेकाचा नंबर येत होता आणि एकेकजण आत जात होता. आरोहीचा नंबर आला तशी ती उठली, आत जाणार तोच साफसफाई करणाऱ्या त्या आजी चक्कर येऊन खाली पडल्या. बाकीचे उमेदवार फक्त घाबरले अन बसून राहिले, कुणीतरी आजीला बघावं म्हणून इकडेतिकडे पाहू लागले. आरोही आत न जाता सरळ आजीकडे गेली, त्यांना उचललं आणि सोफ्यावर बसवलं. पाणी दिलं आणि पर्स मध्ये असलेलं एक चॉकलेट दिलं.

“आजी हे गोड खाऊन घ्या, शुगर कमी झाली असेल म्हणून चक्कर आली असेल कदाचित..”

आजीची योग्य व्यवस्था लावून आरोही पुन्हा मुलाखतीसाठी बाहेर थांबली, सर्व उमेदवार निघून गेलेले. आरोहीने शिपायाला विचारलं तेव्हा तो म्हणाला की साहेब वेळेचे एकदम काटेकोर आहेत, तुम्ही वेळेत गेला नाहीत तिथेच बाद झालात..आरोहीला वाईट नाही वाटलं, कारण ती उगाच उशिरा नव्हती गेली. ती वळली तसा मागून आवाज आला..

“थांबा..”

समोर बघते तर काय, मानव..

“तुम्ही? इथे?”

“होय, मीच मुलाखत घेतोय..खरं तर मला वेळ न पाळणारी माणसं आवडत नाहीत पण तुमचं वागणं मी कॅमेऱ्यात बघितलं आणि थांबलो..”

“ओह..थॅंक्यु सर..”

आरोहीला मुलाखत होणार म्हणून आनंद होण्यापेक्षा मानव पुन्हा भेटला, तेही या रुपात याचा जास्त आनंद झाला होता. मुलाखत पार पडली, आरोही तिच्या हुशारीने जिंकली आणि तिने नोकरी मिळवली. आरोही जाताच केबिनमध्ये मानवचा ऑफिसमधला एक सहकारी येतो..

“झाले का मग interview?”

“हो..बराच वेळ लागला, पण झाले एकदाचे..”

“मग कोण निवडणार?”

“आत्ता ती मुलगी गेली ना, ती..”

“अच्छा..”

तो मित्र मानवशी कामाचं बोलू लागतो, पण मानव वेगळ्याच विचारात असतो.

“हॅलो मानव, अरे मी काहीतरी बोलतोय..”

“अं??”

“कुठे हरवलाय? मुलाखत झाल्यापासून वेगळ्याच विचारात आहेस तू?”

“तुझ्यापासून काय लपवायचं आता..तुला माहितीये MBA प्रोजेक्ट साठी मी घरोघरी प्रोडक्ट विकायला गेलेलो?”

“हो, आम्हीही गेलेलो…पुढे?”

“या मुलीच्या घरी सुद्धा गेलेलो मी..”

“मग??”

“या मुलीने दार उघडलं आणि अंगावर एकदम शहारे आले..”

“इतकी कुरूप होती ती?”

“अरे वेड्या, सौंदर्याची खाण होती..”
