पलाश ला पटनाईक वर संशय येतो, कावेरी आणि पटनाईक मध्ये काहीतरी चालू आहे असं तो अक्षय च्या कथेत लिहितो, आणि ते सगळं खरं होतं हेही त्याला माहित असतं. म्हणजे पटनाईक आणि कावेरी मध्ये खरंच काहीतरी आहे याची त्याला खात्री पटते…तो पटनाईकांना फोन करून घरी बोलावतो…

पटनाईक त्याच्या घरी जातात..

“मी लिहिलेलं सगळं खरं होतंय, आणि जे मला दिसलं त्यावरून माझी आता खात्री पटली आहे की ते तुम्हीच..”

“पलाश वेडेपणा करू नकोस, तुला माहितीये की हे सगळं कुणीतरी घडवून आणतय…”

“मलाही असच वाटायचं, पण आता मला जाणीव होतेय की माझ्या कथेतला अक्षय मीच…आणि मलाही दैवी शक्ती प्राप्त आहे…मी लिहिलेलं सगळं खरं होतंय… कावेरी माझा प्राण आहे, तिच्याकडे ज्याची दृष्टी असेल त्याचे डोळे मी फोडून टाकेन..”

असं म्हणत सुरा काढत पलाश पटनाईकांच्या अंगावर धावतो..

“पलाश…ही चूक करू नकोस…तुला माहितीये की तुला याचीच भीती होती पण तरी तू तेच करतोय..”

“होऊदे सगळं खरं… मला त्याची पर्वा नाही..”

दोघांमध्ये खूप झटापट होते. त्या नादात दोघेही नोकर बंडूच्या स्टोर रूम पाशी असलेल्या जागेवर जातात…तिथे पलाश चं पुस्तक त्यांना मिळतं..

“पलाश थांब..हे पुस्तक इथे???”

पलाश शांत होतो, हातातला सुरा खाली पडतो…

“बंडू? तो कधीपासून माझं पुस्तक वाचायला लागला??”

“याचा अर्थ…”

इतक्यात आई मागून येते..

“पलाश, अरे बंडू दोन दिवसांपासून गायब आहे…”

“मिस्टर पलाश, यावरून साफ आहे की बंडू हे सगळं करतोय..”

“नाही नाही, तो असं करणं शक्य नाही….त्याचे वडील आमच्याकडे कामाला होते, आणि आता तो…”

“याची चौकशी व्हायला हवी..मिस्टर पलाश, तुम्ही पोलीस स्टेशन ला चला…मी हवालदार ला फोन करून नाकेबंदी करायला सांगतो, तो जिथे असेल तिथून त्याला पकडून आणायला लावतो..”

“त्याची काहीएक गरज नाहीये.”

मागून अचानक बंडू चा आवाज येतो अन सर्वजण त्या दिशेने पाहतात. बंडू चा पोशाख अगदी बदलेला असतो. एखाद्या श्रीमंत माणसासारखा पोशाख त्याने केलेला असतो…

“बंडू??? तू केलंस हे सगळं?”

“होय…मीच घडवून आणलं हे सगळं..”

“अरे पण का? तुझ्या वडिलांना आम्ही आसरा दिला…तुला आसरा दिला आणि तूच असं केलंस??”

“हो कारण मला माझा आणि माझ्या वडिलांचा अपमान सहन होत नव्हता..”

“आम्ही काय अपमान केला त्यांचा?”

“पलाश, तुला आठवतंय? आपण एकाच वयाचे, लहान होतो तेव्हा एकाच शाळेत जायचो…पण पुढे फी परवडत नसल्याने मला शाळा सोडावी लागली…शाळेत मी कायम अव्वल असूनसुद्धा मला शाळा सोडावी लागली…मग मी तुझी पुस्तकं चोरून शाळेत न जाता अभ्यास करत गेलो…”

“पण यात कसला अपमान आला?”

“अपमान पुढे आहे…जेव्हाही मी तुझ्या सोबत माझी तुलना करायला लागायचो तेव्हा बाबा नेहमी मला रागवायचे… त्यांचं एकच वाक्य असायचं..

“पलाश म्हणेल तेच झालं पाहिजे…आपण नोकर आहोत, त्यांचा एकूनेक शब्द पाळायचा…”

बस..माझ्या मनावर हे लहानपणापासून कोरलं गेलं…क्षमता असूनही केवळ गरिबीमुळे मी मागे राहिलो…

पलाश च्या आईला जुनं सगळं आठवतं… लहानपणी पलाश पेक्षा बंडू ला जास्त मार्क्स होते, पण त्याला शाळा सोडावी लागणार होती. तसं पाहिलं तर बंडू चा शाळेचा खर्च उचलणं त्यांना सहज शक्य होतं, पण आपल्या मुलापेक्षा कुणी पुढे जायला नको म्हणून त्यांनी मुद्दाम बंडू ला नोकरच बनवून ठेवलं..

पटनाईक म्हणतात…

“हे बघा..तुमच्यासोबत अन्याय झाला आहे मान्य आहे…पण म्हणून तुम्ही हे इतकं सगळं कसं घडवून आणलं?”

“इतकं सगळं करण्याची तुझी हिम्मत कशी झाली?”

पलाश बंडू च्या अंगावर धावून जातो…

पटनाईक त्याला थांबवतात…

“हा मानसिक रुग्ण दिसतोय, लहानपणी मनावर झालेला आघात आणि त्यातून हे सगळं याने घडवून आणलं आहे…मला सांग बंडू, इतकं सगळं झालं असता तू समोर का आलास?”

“कारण मला पुस्तकाचा शेवट पूर्ण करायचा होता…तुम्हाला मारायचं होतं…”

बंडू बंदूक काढतो, पलाश ला मागून पकडतो आणि त्याच्या हातात बंदूक देऊन त्याचे हात घट्ट पकडतो…

“तुम्ही मरणार, पलाश च्या हातूनच तुमचा मृत्यू होणार ..पुस्तकाचा शेवट खरा होणार..”

पलाश बंदूक सोडवण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो पण बंडू त्याचा हातातून बंदूक निसटू देत नाही…गोळी सुटते अन थेट पटनाईकांच्या छातीत…

सर्वजण खूप घाबरतात…पटनाईक जमिनीवर कोसळतात…बंडू त्यांच्याजवळ येऊन हसायला लागतो..पटनाईकांचे डोळे मिटलेले असतात…बंडू जवळ येताच झटकन डोळे उघडतात आणि बंडू ला दोन्ही हातानी पकडतात..
