 सोनाली येणार अशी खबर गावात पसरली अन गावातल्या ज्येष्ठांपासून लहान मुलांपर्यंत सर्वजण कामाला लागले…

गावातल्या मुख्य मंडळींनी मिटिंग बोलावून सर्व नियोजन केले…

ठरल्याप्रमाणे सोनालीने गावात प्रवेश केला, तिला गावा पर्यंत सोडायला एक चकचकीत गाडी आली होती..ती वेशीपाशी उतरली आणि लगेच सुवासिनींनी तिचं औक्षण केलं…तिच्या आईने तिची गळाभेट घेतली…सर्वांचं लक्ष मात्र तिच्या वडिलांकडे होतं… ते चोरट्या नजरेने लांब उभं राहून सगळं बघत होते..जवळ यायची त्यांची हिम्मत होत नव्हती… मनात तिच्याबाबत अपार कौतुक असलं तरी ते चेहऱ्यावर ते लपवण्याचा प्रयत्न करत होते…

सोनाली लहानपणी त्यांच्या शेतात रोज जाई, वडिलांचं शेतीकाम ती बघत असे, शेतात मनसोक्त बागडत असे…सोनाली लांब लांब उड्या मारत कुठलंही अंतर सहज पार करे… शेतातील एका वाटेवर मध्ये मोठा खड्डा होता, जाताना त्यात पाय टाकून जावे लागे, पण सोनाली एका उडीत ते अंतर पार करे. शाळेत लांब उडीत तिचा कायम पहिला क्रमांक असायचा. तिच्या क्रीडा शिक्षकांनी तिचा हा गुण हेरत तिला लांब उडी स्पर्धेत पाठवायचं ठरवलं..दुसऱ्या शाळेत स्पर्धा असली तरी वडील पाठवणार नाहीत हे तिला माहीत होतं, एक तर शाळेत पाठवायलाच त्यांचा नकार होता, त्यात हे सगळं सांगितलं तर सगळंच बंद होईल या विचाराने ती आणि तिच्या आईने वडिलांना कळू दिलं नाही..

अश्या अनेक स्पर्धांमध्ये तिने गोल्ड मेडल मिळवले, पण तेही घरात लपवूनच ठेवावं लागे. सोनाली ची आई वडील कामावर गेल्यावर हळूच ते काढून छातीशी धरत असे..

सोनालीची निवड देशस्तरीय स्पर्धेत झाली. तिला चंदीगड येथे नेशनल लेव्हलच्या स्पर्धेत सहभागी व्हायचं होतं.. त्यासाठी खर्च लागणार होता आणि घरच्यांपैकी कुणाला तरी सोबत न्यावं लागणार होतं. तिच्या क्रीडा शिक्षकांची आई देवाघरी गेल्याने ते येऊ शकणार नव्हते..

दोघी मायलेकी घरातच विचार करत बसतात..

“आई..तात्यांना सांगायचं का सगळं?”

“वेडी आहेस का, ते तुलाही मारतील आणि मलाही, तुझी शाळा बंद होईल..”

“किती दिवस लपवणार आई, कधी ना कधी सांगावच लागेल ना..”

आई हळूच पेटीतून तिचे मेडल काढते, कौतुकाने बघत म्हणते..

“फार वाटतं, ही मेडलं आपल्या झोपडीच्या बाहेरच्या भिंतीवर लावावी, येणाऱ्या जाणाऱ्याला ती दिसावी अन त्यांनी मनभरून तुझं कौतुक करावं..”

दोघींची नजर दरवाजाजवळ जाते…दोघी पटकन उभ्या राहतात..वडील दारातच उभे असतात आणि त्यांनी सर्व ऐकलेलं असतं..

“मी नसताना ही थेरं चालवली तुम्ही??? मला अंधारात ठेवताय?? एवढी हिम्मत झालीच कशी तुमची??”

असं म्हणत ते दोघींच्या अंगावर धावून जातात…

सोनाली ला ते काहीबाही बोलायला लागतात…

वडील तिच्या मागे तिला धरायला जातात पण आई त्यांना पकडून ठेवते..आईला आता स्वतःची पर्वा नव्हती… मुलीला तिला मोकळं आकाश द्यायचं होतं…
