कीर्ती चा बघण्याचा कार्यक्रम नुकताच पार पडला होता..दोघांची पसंती झाली होती, आता मुहूर्त बघायचा तेवढा बाकी होता…कीर्ती च्या आईची एका फार मोठ्या पंडिजींशी ओळख होती, ते रविवारी घरी येणार होते. कीर्ती च्या आईने मुलाच्या आईलाही घरीच बोलावलं..
संध्याकाळी गुरुजी घरी आले, कीर्ती ऑफिस मधेच होती..होणाऱ्या सासूबाई दाराकडे डोळे लावून बसलेल्या,
“कुणाची वाट बघताय विहिनबाई??”
“कीर्ती अजून आली नाही, 8 वाजले..”
“ऑफिस मध्ये काम असलं की होतो तिला उशीर, येईलच ती..”
पंडितजी आले..त्यांनी मुहूर्त काढला..त्यांना सगळ्या गोष्टी विचारून निरोप दिला…
“ताई उशीर झालाय, तुम्ही जेवण करूनच जा आता..”
“नका हो..असं अचानक..”
“आपण काय परके आहोत का आता, संकोच बाळगू नका..मी आत्ता स्वयंपाक करते..”
कीर्तीच्या आईने आपुलकीने त्यांना थांबवून घेतलं…दहा वाजले तरी कीर्ती आली नव्हती,
“अहो दहा वाजले, कीर्ती इतका वेळ ऑफिस मध्ये असते??”
“अहो सांगायचंच राहिलं बघा…तिचा फोन आला होता..साडेअकरा वाजतील तिला यायला..”
“अहो इतक्या रात्रीचं मुलीच्या जातीने येणं म्हणजे…कुणी घ्यायला जाणार नाही का?”
“तिचे बाबा नाहीत शहरात, नाहीतर त्यांना पाठवलं असतं.. पण काळजी करू नका, काहीही होणार नाही.”
“अहो असं काय म्हणता, बातम्यांमध्ये काय काय ऐकू येतं.. आजकाल मुली अजिबात सुरक्षित नाहीत…आपणच आपल्या मुलींना लगाम घालायला हवा..त्या कुणाच्याही तावडीत सापडू नये असं आपणच त्यांना जपायला हवं..”
“माफ करा पण याबाबतीत माझं मत जरा वेगळं आहे…मी माझ्या मुलीला सुरक्षित राहावं म्हणून खुंटीला बांधून न ठेवता चार लोकांशी हात करायला शिकवलं आहे…रात्री अपरात्री गरजेला बाहेर पडावं लागलंच तर आलेल्या परिस्थितीशी कसं सामोरं जायचं हे शिकवलं आहे…मान खाली घालून चालण्यापेक्षा ताठ मानेने जगायला शिकवलं आहे…कसं आहे की परिस्थिती बदलणं आपल्या हातात नाही, पण परिस्थितीशी दोन हात करणं आपल्या हातात आहे..”
सासूबाई ते ऐकून चमकल्या…कीर्ती जर लग्नानंतर अशीच रात्री अपरात्री येत गेली अन काही चुकीचं घडलं तर? मुलगी अन सून, घराची इज्जत असते, तिलाच जर इतकं स्वातंत्र्य दिलं तर स्वतःच्या पायावर धोंडा मारून घेण्यासारखं आहे…
सासूबाई तिथून निघाल्या, खाली त्यांच्यासाठी एक टॅक्सी बुक केली होती…त्या बसल्या अन गाडीत विचार करू लागल्या,
“परत एकदा विचार करावा का लग्नाचा? पुढे जाऊन काही संकट येण्यापेक्षा आताच नको सांगितलेलं बरं… मोहितला सांगू का? तोच निर्णय घेईल…”
“हॅलो मोहित…मला जरा महत्वाचं बोलायचं आहे…तू जो निर्णय घेतला आहेस तो..”
एवढ्यात त्यांचं बाहेर लक्ष जातं, भलत्याच रस्त्याने ड्रायव्हर गाडी नेत असतो…
“ड्रायव्हर हा रस्ता चुकीचा आहे…मोहित मी तुला नंतर कॉल करते..”
ड्रायव्हर प्रतिसाद देत नाही आणि अजून वेगाने गाडी चालवू लागतो… सासूबाईंच्या लक्षात येतं.. त्यांच्या अंगावर सोनं असतं… आणि हा ड्रायव्हर आता कुठे नेईल, काय करेल या भीतीने त्यांचा थरकाप उडाला…त्या गाडीचं दार उघडू पाहताच ड्रायव्हर त्यांना धमकवतो… त्यांचा मोबाईल हिसकवतो… सासूबाईंना आता समोर फक्त मरण दिसत असतं…
ड्रायव्हर एका ठिकाणी गाडी थांबवतो, तिथे आधीच 2 इसम उभे असतात..
“ए…उतर खाली…”
“मला सोडून द्या, तुम्हाला काय हवंय??”
“अंगातलं सगळं सोनं काढ… मगच सोडू..”
सासूबाई अंगातलं एकेक सोनं काढू लागतात, त्या कानातलं काढायला कानाला हात लावतात तोच त्यांचा हात कुणीतरी पकडतो..त्या बघतात…कीर्ती???
“अजिबात अंगातलं सोनं द्यायचं नाही..”
“मग तुलाच उचलावं लागेल..” ते 2 इसम हसायला लागले…
“हात तर लावून दाखव भडव्या…”
हे ऐकताच दोघेजण किर्तीवर धावून आले..किर्तीने पहिल्या इसमाच्या पोटावर इतका जोरात ठोसा मारला की उलटी करत तो बाजूला पडला..आणि दुसऱ्याच्या नाकावर असा काही वार केला की त्याच्या डोळ्यासमोर काजवे चमकू लागले..
हे पाहून ड्रायव्हर किर्तीवर धावून आला..दोघांमध्ये झटापट झाली..किर्तीने त्याच्या पोटाखाली असा काही वार केला की ड्रायव्हर जागेवरच आडवा झाला..
काही वेळाने या तिघांना जोर आला आणि आता तिघेही किर्तीवर धावून आले, दोघांनी किर्तीला पकडून ठेवलं आणि एकाने तिला जोरात मारायला सुरवात केली..
अश्या प्रसंगात किर्तीने तिला धरून ठेवलेल्या माणसांच्या हाताला चावा घेतला..इतका की ते रक्तबंबाळ झाले…आणि समोरच्या ड्रायव्हरला तिने दगड उचलून डोक्यात घातला..
सासूबाई सगळं बघत होत्या..एकटी कीर्ती त्यांच्यासमोर जगदंबा बनून उभी होती आणि बाकीचे तिघे रक्तबंबाळ होऊन कळवळत होते… स्वतःचा जीव वाचावा म्हणून तिघांनी तिथून काढता पाय घेतला…
“कीर्ती? तू…. इथे..”
“काकू, मी अर्धा तास लवकर निघाले होते, रस्त्यात तुम्ही मला टॅक्सी मध्ये दिसला…खिडकी उघडी होती अन तुमचा चेहरा घाबरलेला दिसला मला…म्हणून मी टॅक्सी चा पाठलाग केला…आता शांत व्हा…काहिही झालेलं नाही, आणि मी तुम्हाला घरी सुखरूप सोडते..”
सासूबाईंना कीर्तीच्या आईचं खरंच कौतुक वाटलं..त्यांचा स्वतःचा मुलगा जिथे या परिस्थितीत हातपाय गाळून बसला असता तिथे किर्तीने त्या माणसांशी दोन हात केले..
घरी गेल्यावर मोहितने विचारलं..
“आई काय सांगत होतील तू?? माझ्या निर्णयाचं काय..”
