मनीषा पटकन फोन ठेवते आणि इकडे आईच्या मनात काळजीचं वारं उठतं. चांगलं स्थळ म्हणून मुलीचं लवकर लग्न लावून दिलं तेही एका छोट्याश्या गावात. लहान भाऊ खूप शिकला, त्याने खूप प्रगती केली अन घराचं रूप गरिबीपासून एकदम श्रीमंतीत पालटलं. ऐसपैस बंगला, गाडी, नोकर माणसं..पण हे सगळं सुख मात्र मुलीला नाही म्हणून कावेरीबाई नेहमी काळजीत असत. माहेरी आली की ती दुखं तात्पुरती का होईना तिला देण्याचा प्रयत्न करत. मुलीला तिच्या सासरी घरातली सगळी कामं करावी लागत. कपडे धुण्यापासून ते झाडझुड..सगळं.त्यात सासू सासऱ्यांची विशेष सेवा.
पण या काळजाला बळी पडायची ती सुषमा, त्यांची सून. मुलगा चांगला शिकलेला असल्याने त्याच्या तोलामोलाची शिकलेली आणि कमावणारी सून घरी आली. तिला मिळणारी सुखं आपल्या लेकीला नाही म्हणून कावेरीबाई विनाकारण मनात डूख घेऊन बसत.
“सुषमा काहीच कामं करावी लागत नाही” हेच ते इतरांना सांगत. घरात वॉशिंग मशीन मध्ये ती कपडे धुवत असताना त्यांना पदर खोचून कपडे धुवायला जाणारी त्यांची मुलगी दिसे, घरात नोकरचाकर साफसफाई करत असताना लादी पुसणारी त्यांची मुलगी दिसे, सुषमा छानपैकी तयारी करून ऑफीसला जात असताना घामाने बरबटलेली त्यांची लेक त्यांना दिसे.
सुनेला काहीच कामं करावी लागत नाही म्हणून त्यांना एक प्रकारे ईर्षा वाटे. आता घरात पैसे असतांना आणि परिस्थिती असतांना विनाकारण तिने का करावं? हाही त्यांच्या मनात विचार येई, पण मुलगी डोळ्यासमोर दिसली की सगळं चुकीचं वाटे.
आजकाल सुषमा ऑफिसमध्ये जरा जास्त वेळ थांबत असे. घरात कुणाची गैरसोय नको म्हणून तात्पुरता स्वयंपाकी तिने लावला होता. सुषमाची ऑफिसमधली कामं खूप वाढली होती, ती त्याच्याच टेन्शन मध्ये असायची..आणि त्या बदल्यात घरातील लहानसहान कामही करायला तिला वेळ नसायचा. याउलट लेकीला आता वाळवणाच्या दिवसात कामं वाढली होती, कुरडया, पापड, लोणचं यात ती पार थकून जात होती. त्यात तिचे चार दिवस उपवास चालू होते, त्यामुळे ती जरा जास्तच अशक्त झालेली. बाहेर उन्हात बऱ्याचदा काम करावे लागे. कावेरीबाईंना ही टोकाची परिस्थिती काही सहन होईना.. त्यांनीही ठरवलं, सुनेला जरा बाईच्या कष्टाची जाण करून द्यावी, घरातही किती कामं असतात याची कल्पना द्यावी. म्हणजे माझी लेक किती राबते याची तिला जाणीव होईल..
रात्री जेवण झालं अन सर्वजण झोपायला गेले. कावेरीबाईंना झोप लागेना, त्यांनी ठरवलं. सुषमाला उद्या सुट्टी घ्यायला लावायची..आणि सांगायचं की आपल्याला पापड, कुरडया करायच्या आहेत, सगळं सामान आणू, दळून घेऊ आणि करून टाकू, चार दिवस सुट्ट्या घे असं सांगायला त्या सुषमा अन लेकाच्या खोलीकडे गेल्या.
खोलीचे दार उघडेच होते, त्यांचा मुलगा केव्हाच झोपी गेलेला अन सुषमा मात्र कॉम्प्युटर वर काहीतरी काम करत होती. तिला एक फोन आला आणि ती बोलू लागली..
“हॅलो सर..”
“हॅलो..हॅलो..आवाज कमी येतोय..”
कॉलनीत एकाच्या लग्नाचा डीजे चालू असल्याने फोनचा आवाज कमीच ऐकू येत होता.
आवाज नीटसा ऐकू न आल्याने तिने स्पीकरवर फोन टाकला..आता बऱ्यापैकी ऐकू यायला लागलेलं.

“मॅडम तुमच्याकडून सर्व फाईल्स पूर्ण होतील अशी खात्री आहे तुम्हाला?”

“सर, माझ्या मिस्टरांनी घराच्या कामासाठी बरंच कर्ज घेतले आहे, त्यांना हातभार म्हणून हे जास्तीचे पैसे माझ्यासाठी खूप महत्वाचे आहेत..आणि उपासाचं काय, बायका असंही उपवास करतातच की, फरक एवढाच की ती देवाच्या नावाखाली असतो..माझा उपवास माझ्या नवऱ्याच्या सुखासाठी असं समजा..आणि नुसतं तेवढच नाही, तर मी एकेक रुपया जमा करून माझ्या नणंद बाईंसाठी काही वस्तू घेणार आहे..वॉशिंग मशीन, फ्रीज वगैरे…लग्नात त्यांना फार काही देता आलं नाही, म्हणजे मी नव्हतेच ना तेव्हा, आता आले तर माझं कर्तव्य आहे ते..सॉरी सर मी फार पर्सनल गोष्टी बोलून जातेय..”
