सूरज आणि त्याचे आई वडील घरात गेले. आईच्या चेहऱ्यावर उत्साह नसला तरी वडील मात्र प्रत्येकवेळी नव्या आशेने पाहुण्यांकडे बघत. आपल्या सरभराईत काहीही कमी पडायला नको असा त्यांचा प्रयत्न असे. आईने पोह्यांचा गॅस बंद करून झाकण ठेवलं आणि कोमल तयार आहे की नाही हे पाहायला गेली.
“अगं ए बाई, पाहुणे आलेत बाहेर. तयारी कर पटकन चल..”
“आई मला नाही करायचं लग्न..”
“लग्न लांबची गोष्ट, आधी पसंत तर पडू दे..आवर पटकन चल..”
कोमल अनिच्छेनेच तयार होते. साधीशी साडी, साधासा मेकअप.. आवरून ती किचन मध्ये येते. सूरज घराकडे बघत होता. भिंतीवर छान छान हाताने काढलेले चित्र लावले होते, हस्तकलेच्या कलाकुसरीने घर सजवलेलं दिसत होतं. छोटंसं गाव असलं तरी या तिघी बहिणींनी आपापल्या परिने इंटेरिअर करण्याचा प्रयत्न केलेला होता. सुरजला हे खूप आवडत होतं. हॉल आणि किचन मध्ये असलेल्या खिडकीतून कोमलच्या दोघी बहिणी आळीपाळीने लपूनछपून हॉल मध्ये बघत होत्या. सुरजचं लक्ष जातं, तो भुवया उंचावून त्यांना इशारे करतो अन दोन्ही बहिणी तोंड दाबून हसायला लागतात. असा मोकळ्या मनाचा मुलगा बहिणींनी पहिल्यांदाच पाहिलेला, नाहीतर आजवर ताठपणे गंभीर चेहरा करून एकटक भिंतीकडे बघणारे मुलं फक्त येऊन गेलेले. बहिणींना तिथेच वाटू लागलं,
“हे आपले जिजाजी झाले तर किती छान ना. “
कोमल हे सगळं ऐकत होती, पण सगळं काही तिच्या मनाविरुद्ध घडत होतं.
“मुलीला बोलवा..”
हॉल मधून आवाज आला तशी कोमल भानावर आली. पोह्यांचा ट्रे घेऊन डोक्यावर पदर घेऊन समोर आली.
सुरजने आत्तापर्यंत बऱ्याच मुली पाहिलेल्या, कुणी लाजत असायचं, कुणी घाबरलेलं असायचं..पण कोमलच्या डोळ्यातला आत्मविश्वास, तिची तेजस्वी नजर आणि ह्रदयाला जाऊन भिडणारे भाव सुरजने पहिल्यांदा बघितले होते. आपलं माणूस समोर दिसल्यावर मनाला जो थंडावा मिळतो ना त्याची अनुभूती सूरज घेत होता.
कुटुंबात जुजबी बोलणं झालं, सूरज आणि कोमलला बोलायला बाहेर पाठवलं गेलं. घरासमोर एक शेड मध्ये 2 खुर्च्या टाकलेल्या होत्या, कोमल सुरजला तिथे घेऊन जात होती. पण सूरज बिचकत बिचकत चालत होता, मघाचा गायीचा प्रसंग अजूनही ताजा होता. कोमलला ते समजलं आणि गंभीर विचारात असलेली ती एकदम खळखळून हसायला लागते. सूरज तिच्या गोड हसण्याकडे बघतच राहतो. दोघेही त्या शेड मध्ये बसतात..
सूरज मधला बॅड बॉय जागा होतो..
“मग..लग्नानंतर कुठे जायचं फिरायला?”
कोमलही काही कच्ची खिलाडी नव्हती, तिनेही तोडीस तोड उत्तरं द्यायला सुरुवात केली..
“माझ्या माहितीत एक गोशाळा आहे, तिथे जाऊयात..”
सूरज बघतच राहतो, त्याला वाटलेलं की या प्रश्नाला कोमल गोंधळून जाईल, पण झालं उलटंच..
“काय, जायचं ना? लग्न करून मग जायचं की आधीच??”
सुरजची पुरती विकेट पडली, आज पहिल्यांदा मुलगा लाजला होता आणि मुलगी डोळ्यात डोळे घालून प्रश्न विचारत होती.
सुरजला असं बघून कोमल मुद्द्यावर आली..
“हे बघा, विनोद बाजूला ठेवूया…मी स्पष्टच बोलते, मला लग्न करायचं नाहीये..”
“ओहह..कुणी आवडतं वाटतं..”
“नाही, माझं कुटुंब तुम्ही बघितलं असेल,
वडील शेतीत काबाडकष्ट करतात, शेतीचं कर्ज आहे डोक्यावर, दोन बहिणी आहेत, त्यांचं शिक्षण, लग्न…माझ्या शिक्षणात बाबांनी बरेच पैसे खर्ची घातले पण या दोघींची शिक्षणं करणं त्यांना अवघड जाईल, परिणामी त्यांचं नुकसानही होउ शकतं.. मला कायम माझ्या आई बाबांसोबत राहून त्यांना आधार द्यायचा आहे..”
सुरजने कोमलचे एकाच वेळी दोन रूपं बघितली होती, एक मिश्किल आणि दुसरं जबाबदार..सूरज तिच्या प्रेमात पडला होताच पण त्याचं मन मान्य करणार नव्हतं.
“ठीक आहे मग, आपण जाऊया आत”
दोघेही उठतात, कोमल पुढे असते आणि सूरज मागाहून चालत असतो. नकळत त्याचा हात त्याच्या ओलसर डोळ्यापाशी जातो,
“हे काय होतंय असं?” सूरज मनाशीच बोलतो..कोमल पुढे चालत असते. काहीतरी आपलं दूर जातंय, काहीतरी हातातून सूटतय, काहीतरी चुकीचं घडतंय हे त्याचं अंतर्मन त्याला सांगत असतं.
त्याच्या तोंडून अचानक बोललं जातं..
“एक मिनिट कोमल..”
कोमल मागे वळून बघते,
“दोन मिनिटं मला जरा बोलायचं आहे..”
“आता काय?”
“प्लिज, जरा जाऊया ना परत तिकडे”
कोमल आणि सूरज पुन्हा त्या जागेवर जाऊन बसतात, कोमलला प्रश्न पडतो, हा काय सांगणार असेल?
“हे बघा, खरं तर मलाही लग्न करायचं नाहीये, म्हणजे…मी अतिशय स्वच्छंद माणूस, मला कुठल्याही बंधनात अडकायला आवडत नाही. लग्न झाल्यानंतर मुलांचा झालेला उंदीर मी पाहिलाय, माझाही तो व्हावा अशी माझी मुळीच इच्छा नाहीये..आणि तुलाही लग्नात इंटरेस्ट नाहीये, तुला तुझ्या घरची जबाबदारी उचलायची आहे..मग आपण दोघांनी लग्न केलं तर?”

“हे बघा, आपलं डील असेल..तुम्ही माझ्या आयुष्यात डोकवायचं नाही आणि मी डोकावणार नाही. मला मित्र, लेट नाईट पार्ट्या, ट्रॅव्हलिंग हे सगळं आवडतं.. आणि मित्रांसोबत हे सगळं करायलाच मजा आहे..बायकोला प्रत्येक ठिकाणी मिरवायला मला जमणार नाही..”

कोमल विचारात पडते, सूरज जे म्हणतोय तसं केलं तर दोन्ही गोष्टी साध्य होतील..लग्न आणि माहेरची जबाबदारी.
“मग…काय विचार केलाय..”
“हम्म..बोलण्यात तथ्य आहे..शेवटी गाय बैलाची जोडी बनणार आपली..” कोमल गोठ्याकडे बघून म्हणते अन घराकडे चालू लागते..
