आदित्यला प्रेरणाच्या अभ्यासामुळे बदलेललं रुटीन काही पचत नव्हतं. उगाच हिला परीक्षा दे म्हणून बोललो असं त्याला झालं. एरवी प्रेरणा नेहमी आदित्यच्या एका हाकेला तयार असायची, पण आता ती अभ्यासात असेल तर आदित्यला स्वतःची कामं स्वतःला करावी लागत. दोघांमध्ये वाद होऊ लागला. त्यातच दुष्काळात तेरावा महिना म्हणून वीर अचानक आजारी पडला. डॉक्टरला दाखवून त्याला औषधं दिली, पण काही केल्या त्याचा ताप उतरेना. बाळ आजारी असेल तर आईची सर्वात जास्त कसरत असते. एक तर वीर सतत रडत होता, त्यात त्याला झोपही यायची नाही. प्रेरणालाही जागरण होई, ती स्वतः अशक्त होत चाललेली. 

अखेर डॉक्टरांच्या सल्ल्याने त्याला ऍडमिट करावं लागलं. प्रेरणा दिवसभर हॉस्पिटलमध्ये वीर सोबत असायची. सलाईन लावल्यामुळे वीर ला बरं वाटू लागलेलं आणि त्याला शांत झोपही येऊ लागली. हॉस्पिटलमध्ये चार दिवस तरी राहावं लागेल या हिशोबाने प्रेरणाने तिचे काही कपडे आणि सोबतच अभ्यासाला पुस्तक जवळ ठेवलं होतं. आदित्य ऑफिसवरून हॉस्पिटलमध्ये येई आणि प्रेरणा थोडावेळ घरी जाऊन डबा बनवून आणत असे. आदित्य झोपायला परत घरी जाई. 

दुसऱ्याच दिवशी जेव्हा आदित्य ऑफिसवरून हॉस्पिटलमध्ये आला तेव्हा वीर झोपला होता आणि प्रेरणा पुस्तक वाचत होती. तिला अभ्यास करताना पाहून त्याचा पारा चढला, तिच्या हातातून पुस्तक काढून त्याने भिरकावून दिलं..

“आता तरी बस कर ना तुझा हट्ट..बघितलं ना किती हाल झाले तुझ्या या अभ्यासामुळे?”

“काहीही काय बोलतोय आदित्य? माझा अभ्यास आणि वीर चं आजारी पडणं याचा काय संबंध?”

“तू अभ्यास अभ्यास म्हणत वीर कडे सपशेल दुर्लक्ष करत होतील, तरी मी म्हणत होतो की वीर चं वजन कमी झालंय.. पण ऐकायचंच नाही ना..आपलंच खरं करायचं..”

प्रेरणाला खूप वाईट वाटलं. तिचा आत्मविश्वास डळमळीत होऊ लागला..खरंच आपल्यामुळे वीर कडे दुर्लक्ष झालं असेल का? त्यामुळे तो आजारी पडला का? इतके दिवस वीर ला झालेला त्रास आणि इतर धावपळ तिला नकोशी झालेली..हे सगळं आपल्या अभ्यासामुळे होत असेल तर नकोच हा नाद… तिनेही शेवटी हे सगळं सोडून द्यायचं ठरवलं..

वीर ला डिस्चार्ज देण्यात आला. सर्वजण घरी परतले. प्रेरणाने सगळी पुस्तकं विकायची म्हणून बाजूला काढली, आदित्यला सांगून ठेवलं की पुस्तकं कुणी घेणार असेल तर सांग. आदित्य मनोमन खुश झालेला..आता आधीचं रुटीन परत सुरू होणार होतं. 

“हॅलो मनीष, अरे तू mpsc चा अभ्यास करणार होतास ना? माझ्याकडे निम्म्या किमतीती पुस्तकं आहेत, लागलीत तर सांग..”

आदित्यने लगेच त्याच्याच ऑफिसमधल्या त्याच्या सहकाऱ्याला फोन करून कळवलं. प्रेरणाचा जीव तुटत होता पण आता प्राथमिकता वीर ला द्यायची होती. 

वीर ऍडमिट होता म्हणून काही मित्र मंडळी घरी भेटायला आले. त्यांचाच सोसायटीतला आदित्यचा एक मित्र वीर साठी फळं घेऊन भेटायला आला. त्याला पाणी द्यायला प्रेरणा हॉल मध्ये आली तेव्हा तो आदित्यला सांगत होता..

“आदित्य..तरी मी तुला म्हणत होतो की वीर ला आइस्क्रीम देऊ नकोस..अरे लहान आहे तो..मुलांना नाही सहन होत थंड पदार्थ..”

प्रेरणा प्रश्नार्थक नजरेने आदित्यकडे बघून विचारते..

“आइस्क्रीम?”

“होना, त्यादिवशी आदित्य वीर ला घेऊन खाली फिरायला आलेला..तेव्हा आइस्क्रीम ची गाडी आली आणि आम्ही खाऊ लागलो..वीर आमच्याकडे बघत होता, आदित्यने त्यालाही खाऊ घातलं..वीरला चटक लागली आणि त्याने अर्धं संपवलं.. हे गाड्यांवरचे आइस्क्रीम किती हायजनिक असतात कुणाला माहीत, आपल्यासारख्याला चालून जातं पण लहान मुलं आजारी पडू शकतात..”

हे ऐकून प्रेरणाचा संताप होतो. एकतर आइस्क्रीम खाऊ घातलं हे सांगितलं नाही वर वीर आजारी पडला याचं पूर्ण खापर प्रेरणावर फोडलं. चूक आदित्यची होती. प्रेरणा घर आणि वीरला सांभाळून अभ्यास करत होती, तिची प्राथमिकता या दोघांनाच होती..पण तरीही प्रेरणाला या रोषाला सामोरं जावं लागलं. सगळं वेळेवर करूनही हे असं…

आता मात्र तिने आक्रमक पवित्रा घेतला. आदित्यला खडसावून सांगितलं की स्वतःची चूक तू माझ्या माथी मारलीस, हे तुझा मित्र आला म्हणून समजलं नाहीतर मी स्वतःलाच दोष देत बसले असते. आता काहीही झालं तरी मी माझ्या लक्ष्यापासून ढळणार नाही. 

एखाद्या गृहिणीने नवीन काहीतरी करायचं ठरवलं तर घरात नकारात्मक पडसाद उमटू शकतात, कारण आई, पत्नी आणि सून नावाच्या पात्राची वेगळी भूमिका कुणालाही पहावली जात नाही. अश्यावेळी स्वतःसाठी स्त्रीने स्वतः खंबीर उभं राहिलं पाहिजे. कुणीतरी मदतीला येईल, कुणीतरी धीर देईल, कुणीतरी मार्गदर्शन करेल, कुणीतरी प्रोत्साहन देईल या गैरसमजात राहूच नये. कित्येक महिला केवळ याच कारणाने आपल्या नाविन्यपूर्ण कल्पनेला बांध घालत असतात..असो..

प्रेरणाला समजलं की प्रत्येक गोष्टीचं खापर तिच्या अभ्यासवरच येणार, तिने कितीही समजावलं तरी शेवटी तिचं असं चाकोरीबाहेर जाऊन काहीतरी करणं कुणाला रुचणार नाही, अश्यावेळी आपणच स्वतःसाठी उभं राहायला हवं. 

प्रेरणाने सर्व रोषाला सामोरं जात अभ्यास सुरू ठेवला. सोबतच फॉर्म भरण्याची तारीखही लिहून ठेवली, उगाच एवढी मेहनत करून ऐनवेळी गडबड नको. भारताचा इतिहास हा विषय तिचा बऱ्यापैकी अभ्यासून झालेला..आता पुढचा अभ्यास सुरू करायचा होता. 

दारावरची बेल वाजली..आदित्यने ज्या मित्राला पुस्तक विकण्याचं सांगितलं होतं तो दारात उभा होता..
