इतकं रोमँटिक वातावरण असताना कोमल अशी खाली बसून का रडतेय हे सुरजला काही समजेना. त्याने गाणं बंद केलं आणि कोमलला विचारू लागला..
“कोमल काय झालं? सांग ना..अशी अचानक का रडतेय तू??”
“सगळं बरबाद झालं सूरज..सगळं बरबाद झालं..”
“अगं आत्ता काही मिनिटापूर्वी तर तू एकदम नॉर्मल होतीस? आता असं काय घडलं?”
“सूरज शेतकरी आहोत आम्ही, यावेळी काढलेल्या पिकावर बँकेचं कर्ज फिटणार होतं. पण या पावसाने सगळं पीक घालवलं.. खर्च तर वाया गेलाच पण आता कर्ज कुठून फेडायचं? बाबांनी खूप स्वप्न पाहिली होती, या पैशात कर्ज फेडायचं, आईला कितीतरी दिवसांपासून नवी साडी घेतली नव्हती ती घ्यायची होती..बाबा पूर्ण कोलमडले असणार..”
सुरजला स्वतःवरच राग येतो. रोमँटिक वाटणारा हा क्षणभरचा पाऊस शेतकऱ्याची वर्षभराची मेहनत खाऊन जातो हे त्याच्या लक्षातच आलं नाही. त्याला त्याच्या ऑफिसमध्ये आलेल्या कलाइन्ट्स ची वाक्य आठवली आणि तो घाबरून गेला..
“कोमल चल लवकर..”
“कुठे??”
“चल, काहीही विचारू नकोस..”
सूरज कोमलला गाडीत बसवून भरधाव गाडी चालवतो, कोमलच्या मनात असंख्य प्रश्न निर्माण होतात..
“माझ्या वागण्याचा याला राग आला असेल का? इतका रोमँटिक असताना मी मात्र माझंच दुःखं कुरवाळत बसले..याचं सुरजला वाईट नसेल वाटलं ना?”
गाडी आपल्या घराकडे जातेय हे बघून कोमलला अजूनच भीती वाटू लागली. भिजलेली दोघे गाडीतून खाली उतरतात.
“मावशी..कोमलचे बाबा कुठे आहेत?”
“येतीलच ते, तुम्ही किती भिजला आहात..या मध्ये मी टॉवेल आणते..”
“नाही आधी सांगा काका कुठे आहेत?”
“शेतात गेलेत..”
सूरज पावसाचा विचार न करता चिखल तुडवत वेड्यासारखा शेतात पळत सुटतो..सगळीकडे काकांना शोधतो.. ते कुठेही दिसत नाही..सूरज बाजूला एका झाडाखाली थांबतो तिथे त्याला दिसतं… एका शेडखाली काका उभे होते, शेजारी किटनाशकाची बाटली होती..काकांनी एकदा शेताकडे पाहिलं आणि ती बाटली तोंडाला लावणार तोच…
तोच सूरजने ती बाटली खेचून बाहेर भिरकावून दिली..
“काका काय करताय हे? मावशींचा, तुमच्या मुलींचा तरी विचार करा..”
कोमलचे वडील मटकन खाली बसतात आणि लहान मुलासारखे रडू लागतात..
“नुसता विचार करून काय करू? आणि नुसता असा हतबल झालेला माणूस म्हणून कितीवेळ घरच्यांना तोंड दाखवू? जिवंत असलो तरी घरासाठी काही करू शकलो नाही मी, बायकोला नवी साडी घेऊ शकलो नाही, मुलींची लग्न करू शकलो नाही आणि कर्जही फेडू शकलो नाही…काय उपयोग असं नुसतं शरीराने जिवंत राहून?? निदान मी गेल्यावर सरकार मदत म्हणून चार पैसे तरी पुढे करेल..”
“तुम्हाला काय वाटतं? घरची लोकं ते पैसे घेतील? अश्यावेळी करोडो रुपयेही पुढे केले तरी ते कागदासमान वाटतात. कारण आपला माणूस त्याने परत येणार नसतो, तुम्हाला काही झालं असतं तर…घर कायमचं कोलमडून पडलं असतं.. कितीही पैसे मिळाले असते तरी ही उणीव भरून निघणार नव्हती..”
“काय करू मी आता तूच सांग..कसं कर्ज फेडू? घरात दोन वेळेचंअन्न कसं पुरवू??”
“बाबा, तुमचा मुलगा अजून शाबूत आहे..मी असतांना कसलीही काळजी करायची नाही..”
बोलत असतानाच कोमल, तिच्या बहिणी आणि आई धावत तिकडे येतात. बाबांचा असा अवतार आणि शेजारी सांडलेली किटकनाशकाची बाटली बघून सर्वजणी एकच हंबरडा फोडतात..”
“बाबा हे काय करायला चालले होते तुम्ही?”
“अहो असलं काही करायचं मनात तरी कसं आलं तुमच्या?”
सर्वजण वडिलांपाशी गोळा होतात आणि त्यांच्या मांडीवर डोकं ठेऊन रडायला लागतात. सूरज सर्वांची समजूत घालून सर्वांना घरी आणतो.
सूरज निरोप घेत असताना कोमल त्याला घट्ट मिठी मारून रडायला लागते..
“देवासारखा धावून आलास..थोडा जरी उशीर झाला असता तर आम्ही सगळं काही गमावून बसलो असतो..”
“कोमल आता जास्त विचार करू नकोस, वडिलांकडे लक्ष ठेव.. मी बघतो कर्जाची काय सोय होते ते..”

सूरज खिन्न मनाने घरी परततो. आई वडील त्याची वाटच बघत असतात. तो बाहेरच्या खुर्चीत बसून घेतो, आई पटकन आतून टॉवेल घेऊन येते..
“किती भिजलास रे…एवढी गाडी असून इतका ओला कसा झालास?”
वडिलांचं लक्ष मात्र त्याच्या चेहऱ्याकडे असतं. त्याच्या चेहऱ्यावरील चिंता ते ओळखतात, काहीतरी विपरीत घडलेलं आहे याची त्यांना कल्पना येते.
सूरज कपडे बदलून त्याच्या खोलीत जातो, आई वडील त्याच्या मागे जातात.
“सूरज बाळा, काही झालंय का?”
सूरज बराच वेळ काहीही बोलत नाही. नंतर धीर करून सगळं सांगतो. आई वडिलांनाही धक्का बसतो. हे असं काही होऊ शकतं याची त्यांनी कल्पनाही केलेली नसते.
“सूरज, देवाच्या कृपेने आपल्याकडे सगळं काही आहे..कर्जाचे पैसे आपण देऊया का त्यांना?”
“हो खरंच, आणि त्यांना संकोच वाटू शकतो, पण म्हणा की हळुहळु जसे जमतील तसे परत करा..म्हणजे निदान बँकेची टांगती तलवार तरी नाही रहाणार..”
“बाबा आपण कितीही म्हटलं तरी ते ऐकणार नाही, एकवेळ मरणाला कवटाळतील पण स्वाभिमान सोडणार नाही, मी कोमललाही हे बऱ्याचदा सुचवलं होतं पण नाही ऐकलं तिने..”
“अरे देवा…आता कसं होईल त्यांचं..”
आई काळजी करू नकोस, मी करतो काहीतरी.

सुरजला काहीच सुचत नव्हतं. अश्यावेळी एकमेव उपाय…परेश…
“पऱ्या…मोठा राडा झालाय..ये..”
“हो येतो..माझा जन्मच त्यासाठी झालेला आहे..लोकांचे राडे सोडवायला..येतो..”
परेशला सूरज सर्व हकीकत सांगतो. परेशची हे ऐकून धास्तावतो. पण आता दोघांना मिळून काहीतरी उपाय शोधायचा होता.
“सूरज, तुला एक फॅक्ट सांगतो.. आपल्याला एखाद्या गोष्टीचं सोल्युशन तेव्हाच मिळतं जेव्हा त्या प्रोब्लेमची आपल्याला खोलवर माहिती असते..”
“आपण विचारुया ना कोमलला, तिच्या बाबांनाही विचारुया…”
“विचारून काय होणार रे..तुला माहितीये, अर्जुनाने जेव्हा श्रीकृष्णाला सांगितलं की मला हे युद्ध करायचं नाहीये, माझ्यात आता त्राण उरले नाहीत..तेव्हा कृष्णाने काय केलं असेल?”
“त्याला गीता सांगितली..एवढं तर माहितीये रे मलाही..”
“अरे हो, पण विचार कर…फक्त विचारलेल्या प्रश्नाचं उत्तर दिलं का कृष्णाने? उठ, तुला युद्ध करावंच लागेल..मी सांगतो म्हणून कर..एवढं बोलून विषय संपवला असता..पण त्याने तसं केलं नाही..अर्जुनाला सगळं सांगितलं..अगदी जन्म, मृत्यू, धर्माचे प्रकार, दानाचे प्रकार, भक्तीचे प्रकार…वगैरे..”
“एवढं सगळं ला सांगितलं असेल?”
“माणसाला वरवरचं सोल्युशन दिलं की ते पोकळ असतं.. पण सगळं ज्ञान प्राप्त करून, सगळं प्रॅक्टिकली अनुभूवून सोल्युशन काढलं की ते लॉंग टर्म टिकतं..”
“पऱ्या मला नाही समजत ए तू काय बोलतोय ते..”
“जोवर आपण स्वतः शेती करत नाही तोवर आपल्याला शेतकऱ्याच्या समस्या समजणार नाहीत..”
“म्हणजे..आपण कोमलच्या शेतात कामं करायची?”
“ती लोकं स्वाभिमानी आहेत, तुला नाही काम करू देणार..पण एक करू शकतो तू…त्यांच्याकडून एक तुकडा मागून त्यावर शेती करू शकतोस..”
सूरज स्वप्न रंगवू लागतो. चहूकडे हिरवंगार शेत..सूरज कुदळ घेऊन घराकडे येतो..कोमल नऊवारी साडी नेसून त्याला जेवायला वाढते..सूरज त्याच्या मुलांना आवाज देतो अन चार मुलं येऊन सुरजच्या ताटात बसतात..”
“सुऱ्या… ए सुऱ्या…कुठे हरवलास?”
“पऱ्या…तयारी कर…आपल्याला जायचं आहे..”
“आपल्याला??? ए मी नाही हं यात..मला कामं आहेत इकडे..”
“पऱ्या…बॅग तयार ठेव..”
