आदित्यने फॉर्म भरलाय यावर प्रेरणाचा विश्वासच बसेना. 

“आदित्य, खरंच.. तू?”

“मला लाजवू नकोस प्रेरणा.. गेल्या काही दिवसात मी बघतोय. मी ऑफिसच्या चिंतेत असायचो तेव्हा मला मानसिक आधार दिलास तू, आता घरी आहे तर पूर्णवेळ माझी सेवा करते आहेस, घरातली कामं, वीरला सांभाळणं आणि त्यात माझं सगळं आवरणं यात तू कधीही तक्रार केली नाहीस. मी घरी राहिलो ते एका अर्थाने बरंच झालं, मला जाणीव झाली की तू माझ्यासाठी आणि घरासाठी किती करतेय ते..मला विजयने विचारलं होतं फॉर्म बद्दल, पण तू तुझ्या कामात व्यग्र..म्हणूज त्याच्या मदतीने मी तुझा फॉर्म भरून दिला..”

प्रेरणाचे अश्रू थांबत नव्हते. उशिरा का होईना आदित्यने साथ दिली आणि तीही अगदी मोक्याच्या क्षणी..अजून काय हवं होतं..!!

त्यानंतर आदित्यची तब्येत सुधारू लागली. त्याच्यात आता लक्षणीय बदल झाला होता. वीर ला सांभाळून प्रेरणाला तो अभ्यासाला लावायचा. घरातली बरीच कामही करायला मदत करायचा. पंधरा दिवस झाले आणि आदित्यने पुन्हा ऑफिस जॉईन केलं. प्रेरणाच्या अभ्यासाला गती आली होती. स्वयंपाकघरात वस्तुंना दिलेले संदर्भ ती पुन्हा पुन्हा आठवू लागली, रेकॉर्डिंग केलेलं वाचन कामं करताना ऐकू लागली, नोट्स ची नव्याने उजळणी करू लागली, प्रश्नपत्रिका मिळवून वेक लावून त्या सोडवू लागली. सुरवातीला या गोष्टी जड जात होत्या पण आता वेळापत्रक आखून सगळं अगदी काटेकोरपणे होऊ लागलेलं. 

परीक्षा आठ दिवसांवर येऊन ठेपली. आदित्यने हे आठ दिवस मुद्दामहून बाहेरून डबा मागवून घेतला जेणेकरून प्रेरणाला जास्त वेळ मिळेल. पण नेमक्या परीक्षेच्या दिवशी एक नवीन संकट येऊन उभं राहिलं. 

आदित्य परीक्षेच्या दिवशी सुट्टी काढून वीर ला सांभाळणार होता आणि प्रेरणा परीक्षेला जाणार होती. पण नेमक्या त्याच दिवशी आदित्यला ऑफिसमध्ये एक महत्वाची जबाबदारी दिली गेली.

ती टाळणं म्हणजे प्रमोशन वर गदा येण्यासारखं होतं. आदित्यने निर्णय घेतला की प्रमोशनवर गदा आली तरी चालेल पण त्या दिवशी सुट्टी घेणार. पण प्रेरणाने त्याला रोखलं..तिच्या परीक्षेइतकंच आदित्यचं कामही महत्वाचं होतं. 

दोघेही तणावात होते. कामावर येत असलेल्या कमळीच्या हे सगळं लक्षात येत होतं. शेवटी न राहवून तिने प्रेरणाला अडचण विचारली.

“अगं कमळे माझी परीक्षा आहे ना, त्याच दिवशी आदित्यना ऑफिसमध्ये महत्वाचं काम आहे, वीर ला सांभाळायला कोण तयार होईल काही तास याचंच टेन्शन आहे..सासुबाई पण नाही येऊ शकणार..”

“काय वहिनी…तुमची ही पाठराखीण कधी कामाला येईल? मी सांभाळेन वीर ला..छान राहतो तो माझ्यासोबत..”

प्रेरणा ताई मोठ्या ऑफीसर होणार या विचारानेच कमळीला आनंद झाला होता. आजपर्यंत घरात बसून हतबल आणि परावलंबी असलेल्या प्रेरणा ताईबद्दल कमळीला कळकळ होतीच..पण आज खऱ्या अर्थाने तिने मदतीचा हात पुढे केला..

परीक्षेचा दिवस उजाडला. प्रेरणाने देवाला नमस्कार केला. तोवर कमळी दुसऱ्या कामांना सुट्टी देऊन आधीच घरात हजर राहिलेली. प्रेरणा घाबरतच परीक्षेला निघाली. कित्येक वर्षांनी अश्या परीक्षेला ती जात होती त्यामुळे धाकधूक होतीच. 

परीक्षेला बसल्यावर समोर प्रश्न आले आणि वेळ सुरू झाली. एकेक प्रश्न ती वाचू लागली, तिला सगळीच उत्तरं येत होती. सर्व प्रश्नांची उत्तरं ही तिच्या रोजच्या स्वयंपाकघरातूनच मिळत होती. उत्तरं मसाल्याचा डबा, कडधान्यांच्या बरण्या यातच लपलेली होती. वेळेत तिने उत्तरं दिली आणि समाधानाने घरी आली. 

तिला पूर्ण विश्वास होता की pre exam ती पास करणार. आणि तसंच झालं, ती mains साठी सिलेक्ट झाली. त्याचा अजून जोरात अभ्यास केला आणि त्यातही ती पास झाली. तिची मेहनत फळास आली. अनेक संकटातून मार्ग काढत अनेक वादळांना झुंज देत शेवटी तिचं स्वप्न पूर्ण झालं. ही खुशखबरी ऐकून तिच्या बहिणीला विशेष आनंद झाला. तिच्या घरी असतानाच ऑफिसर व्हायची ठिणगी प्रेरणाच्या मनात रुजली गेली होती. प्रेरणाच्या माहेरी आनंदी आनंद, गावातली ती पहिली मुलगी होती जी ऑफिसर बनली होती. 

पण नुसतं एवढं मिळवून कुठे गोष्ट संपणार होती? तिला पुढचे मेल आले..ट्रेनिंग आणि जॉइनिंग बद्दल वेळापत्रक आलं. पुन्हा काळजात धस्स झालं, वीर ला कोण सांभाळणार? घर कोण बघणार? संकटं तिच्या पाचवीला पुजलेली होती. 

“आदित्य, मी स्वतःला सिद्ध केलं तेवढं पुरे..पण पुढे अशी प्रश्न उभी ठाकतील ज्याला पर्याय काहीच नसेल. घर आणि वीर कायम माझी प्रायोरिटी राहिली आहेत आणि माझ्या अश्या नोकरीवर जाण्याने सगळं कोलमडून जाईल..”

“या क्षणासाठी तू किती जीवापाड मेहनत केलीस, आणि आता तो क्षण आल्यावर मागे फिरतेय?”

“होय…कारण वीर चा प्रश्न आहे. लहान आहे तो, त्याला पाळणाघरात मी ठेवणार नाही…कर्तृत्व आणि मातृत्व यात जर स्पर्धा होत असेल तर मी मातृत्वाला प्राधान्य देईल..”

इतक्यात दारावरची बेल वाजली..

“आण, इथे ठेव..आणि मागे अजून दोन बॅग्स आहेत त्याही आण..”

“सासूबाई??? तुम्ही??”
