आशा एक सुसंस्कृत गृहिणी होती, घरकाम आणि घरच्यांची सेवा यापलीकडे तिचं जगच नव्हतं. आशा पूर्वी अशी नव्हती, अतिशय शिस्तबद्ध आणि जशास तसे उत्तर देणारी, पण सासरी मर्यादेत राहावं म्हणून तिने तिच्या स्वभावाला आवर घातला होता. 

दोघांमध्ये या ना त्या कारणाने खटके उडू लागले, नवऱ्याला तिच्या प्रत्येक गोष्टीत चूक काढून तिला बोल लावायला मिजास वाटायची, बायकोला आपण कंट्रोल मध्ये ठेवावं म्हणून या ना त्या कारणाने तो विनाकारण तिला बोले. तिने जे केलं त्याच्या मुद्दाम उलटं करायला लावायचा.

आशाने सुरवातीला ऐकून घेतलं पण नंतर तिचाही संयम सुटला, तिनेही जशास तशी उत्तरं दिली..हे पाहून नवऱ्याचा संताप अनावर झाला..

“थांब तुझ्या बापालाच फोन लावतो..”

हे ऐकून मात्र आशा गर्भगळीत झाली, आपल्या वडिलांना फोन लावून याने तक्रार केली तर…वडील आणि माझ्या माहेरचे टेन्शन मध्ये येतील, आईला झोप लागणार नाही, मला नवऱ्याने हाकलून दिलं अन मी माहेरी राहिली तर माहेरच्यांना नको ते भोगावे लागेल…माझ्या बहिणीचं लग्न जमायला अडचण येईल..

असे अनेक विचार तिच्या मनात येऊ लागले आणि ती घाबरली, नवऱ्याकडे माफी मागू लागली, घरी काही बोलू नका म्हणून गयावया करू लागली..

बस, नवऱ्याने हेच हेरलं, बापाला फोन करायची धमकी दिली की ही आपल्याला हवी तशी वागते..याचाच फायदा घेऊन तिचा नवरा तिला हवं तसं वागवू लागला आणि ती तसं वागू लागली..

एके दिवशी दरवाजावर वर्गणी मागण्यासाठी एक माणूस आला, आशाने 11 रुपये देऊन त्याला परत पाठवलं, मागून तिचा नवरा आला,

“कोण होता तो?”

“कॉलनीतले माणसं आहेत, वर्गणी मागायला आलेले..”

“खरं सांग, तुझं काही सुरू तर नाही ना?”

आशाचे डोळे लाल झाले, संतापाने अंग थरथरू लागलं..हातात येईल ते त्याला ती मारून फेकू लागली, आज सहनशक्तीचा अंत झालेला..तिचं हे रूप पाहून नवरा घाबरला, चूक आपली आहे हेही त्याला माहित होतं पण मुद्दाम तिला धाकात ठेवण्यासाठी या असल्या कुरापती तो करत होता..

तो मागे झाला, तिचे वार सुरूच होते. मग त्याने आपलं अस्त्र काढलं, 

“हे असं वागतात? लाज वाटते का? थांब तुझ्या बापालाच फोन लावतो..”

तिच्या हातातली वस्तू खाली पडली..मंद पावलांनी ती तिच्या नवऱ्याजवळ गेली, नवऱ्याला वाटलं ही घाबरली, तो खुश झाला..

पण तिने त्याचा हातातून मोबाईल हिसकवला, आणि म्हणाली,

“माझ्या बापाला फोन लावतो? तू काय लावतोस, मीच लावते माझ्या बापाला…पण त्या आधी तुझा बाप, तुझी आई आणि तुझं संपूर्ण खानदानाला फोन लावते..

असं म्हणत ती खोलीत गेली आणि दार लावून घेतलं..

“मोठमोठ्याने एकेकाला फोन करत नवऱ्याचे असं चारित्र्यावर संशय घेण्याची गोष्ट सांगू लागली…”

बाहेरून नवरा दार वाजवत होता, आपली आपल्या नातेवाईकात बदनामी होत असलेली त्याला सहनच होत नव्हती, त्याची धडधड इतकी वाढली की त्याला घाम येऊ लागला..जिवाच्या आकांताने तो ओरडू लागला..गयावया करू लागला…

“दार उघड आशा, सॉरी म्हणतो मी..”

सर्वांशी बोलून झाल्यावर तिने दार उघडलं..

“माझ्याही बापाला फोन लावला आणि तुमच्याही..आता परिणामांना तयार रहा..”

असं म्हणत ती फोन नवऱ्याच्या हातात देते, नवरा अक्षरशः रडत असतो, आपली गेलेली अब्रू पहात असतो..

“हे काय केलंस तू..इतक्या टोकाला जायची काय गरज होती?”

“आजवर तुम्ही फक्त धमकी देत होतात ना? मी करून दाखवलं…”

नवरा मटकन खाली बसतो, कोणाकोणाला कॉल केले हे बघायला कॉल लॉग चेक करतो, पाहतो तर काय…एकही कॉल केलेला नव्हता…म्हणजे…!!!

तो बायको कडे बघतो..बायको त्याला म्हणते,

“हाच फरक आहे तुमच्यात आणि माझ्यात, याला संस्कार म्हणतात…आणि यापुढे जर मला त्रास द्यायचा विचार जरी डोक्यात आणला तरी आता जे खोटं खोटं केलं ते प्रत्यक्षात करून दाखवेन…”

नंतर तिच्या अश्या दुर्गेच्या रुपाला आठवून तो आयुष्यभर शिस्तीत वागला…
