दिशा म्हणाली मी माधव सोबत लग्नाला तयार आहे आणि घरात एकच गोंधळ उडाला…सुलेखा च्या वडिलांनी माधव ला नमस्कार करत “या तुम्ही..” असा निरोप घ्यायला सांगितला. माधव तिथून निघाला खरा पण मन दिशा च्या आसपास घुटमळत होतं… कोण ही दिशा? सुलेखा सोबत हिला सकाळी पाहिलं होतं… शहरातली दिसतेय…मग असा अचानकपणे निर्णय का घेतला असेल? असो…तिची आणि माझी बरोबरी तर नाहीच…उगाच मी कशाला तिच्यासाठी स्वप्न बघू…मी आपला साधा शेतकरी….

इकडे दिशाच्या आई वडिलांच्या डोळ्यात संतापाची आग उसळत होती…”दिशा??..समाजसेवा करायची हौस आलीये का तुला??”

“लहान आहेस तू…आगाऊपणा करत जाऊ नको…”

दिशा ने सर्वांचं म्हणणं शांतपणे ऐकून घेतलं आणि म्हणाली..


“पहिली गोष्ट…मला माधव पाहताक्षणी आवडला…दुसरी गोष्ट… तो एक साधन आणि कष्टाळू शेतकरी आहे…तिसरी गोष्ट… त्याच्याशी लग्न केल्यावर मी खुश राहीन की नाही अशी शंका असेल ना तुम्हाला??? मी तुम्हाला वास्तविकता सांगते…शहरात धनाढ्य गणली जाणारी मुलं बायका शहरात आणून संसार सुरू करतात…शहरातल्या उंची राहणीमानासाठी स्पर्धा सुरू होते…मग सुरू होते शर्यत…पैशाच्या मागे धावण्याची, गाडीचा हफ्ता, घराचा हफ्ता फेडण्यासाठी स्त्रीला बाहेर पडावं लागतं ते अगदी गरोदर असताना सुद्धा…किंवा मूल झाल्यावर मनावर दगड ठेऊन…स्त्रीने बाहेर पडू नये असं म्हणत नाही मी, पण तिची इच्छा नसताना गरज म्हणून आणि शहरी श्रीमंतीशी जुळवून घेण्यासाठी तिची मानसिक आणि शारीरिक ओढाताण होते…बाहेरचं खाणं… जागरण…कृत्रिम पदार्थ…या सगळ्याचा त्यांच्यावर भयंकर परिणाम होतो आणि मग शेवटी ते येतात..जातेगाव सारख्या गावात…हवापालट करायला…निवांत आयुष्य जगायला…उगाच नाही आपल्या गावात इतके रिसॉर्ट आहेत…शहरी राहणीमान वाईट आहे किंवा समाधानी नाही असं नाही…पण मला त्यातलं काहीच नकोय….मला उर्वरित आयुष्य याच गावच्या जमिनीत…गावरान खाऊन आणि शुद्ध हवा घेऊन जगायचंय…. आणि सर्वात एक महत्त्वाचं कारण…”

“कुठलं??”


“आत्ता नाही सांगणार मी…वेळ आल्यावर सांगेन…”

दिशा च्या आई वडिलांना दिशा चं म्हणणं पटतं…पण मन अजूनही धजत नव्हतं… शेतकरी मुलगा…शेतकऱ्यांच्या ऐकलेल्या कहाण्या..शहरात वाढलेली दिशा..छोट्याश्या गावात कशी राहीन? तिच्या नोकरीचं काय? तिच्या शिक्षणाचं काय?? एक ना अनेक प्रश्न त्यांचा मनात येऊन गेले…

दुसऱ्या दिवशी घरातलं वातावरण अगदी शांत होतं… काकू श्लोक न म्हणताच तुळशीला पाणी घालत होती…किलबिल पार्टी अंगणात न खेळता फक्त बसून होती…काका झोक्यावरून उठून सारखे येरझारा घालत होते…आणि दिशा चे आई वडील खोलीत बसून चर्चा करत होते…

“दिशा जे बोलली ते सगळं खरंय हो…पण..”

“तिला शहरात पाठवलं… वाटलं होतं लग्न करून तिथेच स्थायिक होईल…शहरी जीवन जगेल….पण तिची ओढ मात्र इथेच…”

“गावातलं जीवन खरंच चांगलंय हो, पण…ती इतकी शिकलेली…हुशार….पण इकडची मानसिकता माहितीये ना, कितीही शिकलेली असो पण चुलीजवळ बसणारी मुलगी लोकांना हवी असते…काय शाश्वती? तिला उद्या तिथे मानसन्मान मिळेल अथवा नाही मिळणार?”

इकडे दिशा च्या मनात भविष्याची स्वप्न असतात…तिने अंदाधुंदी हा निर्णय घेतलेला नसतोच..काहीतरी मोठं प्लॅनिंग तिच्या डोक्यात होतं…आणि माधव तर तिला आवडला होताच…

श्रद्धा ला वाचनाची आवड.घरातलं वातावरण पाहून जरा निवांत बसावं म्हणून गावातल्याच एका वाचनालयात ती गेली…हॉस्टेल वर असतांना तिने एक पुस्तक वाचायला सुरुवात केलेली….तेच तिला पूर्ण करायचं होतं… ती वाचनालयात गेली…तिथे एक नकटं पोरगं लायब्ररीयन म्हणून बसलं होतं… पण तिला काय माहीत…


“सर इथे इंग्रजी पुस्तकं आहेत ना?”

सर म्हणताच पोरगं दचकलं…

“आहेत ना…कुठलं हवं?”

“नाव नेमकं आठवत नाहीये…ते नाही का, त्यात सुप्त आणि जागृत मनाची शक्ती वर्णन केलीये…आधुनिक युगातील मानसिक उपचार इथपर्यंत वाचलं आहे…पुढचं बाकिये..”

पोरगं एक आवंढा गिळतं…
