शिखा, एक सिविल इंजिनिअर. एका मोठया कंपनीत मोठ्या हुद्द्यावर, सहा आकडी पगार. नवरा बायको दोघेही एका अलिशान फ्लॅट मध्ये राहत होते. दोघेही आपापल्या कामात व्यस्त. शिखा घरकामात अगदी शून्य. चहा ठेवण्यापासून ते रात्रीचं जेवण वाढायला माणसं. फ्लॅट मध्ये एक स्वतंत्र सर्व्हन्ट रूम… त्या रूम मध्ये एक माणूस असायचा, तो घरातलं सगळं आवरून घ्यायचा, वर अजून 2 माणसं कामाला..ते बाहेरून सकाळ संध्याकाळ 2 तास कामाला येत. त्यामुळे शिखा अगदी निर्धास्त. सगळं आयतं हातात मिळे. बैठे काम आणि घरी आरामच आराम यामुळे शिखाचं वजन सुटू लागलेलं. व्याधी जडू लागलेल्या, पण तात्पुरती औषधं घेऊन शिखा त्यावर दुर्लक्ष करे.
एके दिवशी घरून फोन,
“शिखा बाळा, मी येतेय..”
“या की आई, खूप दिवसांपासून आल्या नाहीत, आता येणार तर चांगली महिनाभर सुट्टी काढून या..”
“हो बाई, यावेळी खरोखर महिनाभर राहणार आहे मी..”
सतत एकटं वाटणाऱ्या शिखाला घरात असं कुणीही येणार म्हटलं की आनंद व्हायचा. सासूबाई तश्या आधुनिक विचारांच्या, आणि घरात सर्व कामाला माणसं असल्याने शिखाला काही काम पडणार नव्हतं. फक्त आईंसमोर बसून गप्पा मारायच्या आणि वेगवेगळ्या पदार्थांची फर्माईश करायची.
“गणू काका, आई येणार आहेत..सगळा जास्तीचा आणि गोडाधोडाचा बाजार करून ठेवा.” एवढं ते काम फक्त शिखाला.
सासूबाईंना सगळं माहीत होतं, शिखाच्या घरी सर्व कामाला माणसं आहेत, शिखा दिवसभर घराबाहेर असते वगैरे. पण त्यांना एक खंत होती, काहीही झालं तरी शिखा एक स्त्री होती, आणि स्री म्हणून काही बेसिक कामं जमायला हवी, भाजी पोळी जमायला हवी, उद्या मुलं झाली की त्यांना आईच्या हातची कशी चव लागणार? दरवेळी नोकर मंडळी सोबत असतीलच असं नाही.
ठरल्या दिवशी सासुबाई आल्या. येतांना जरा धाकधूक होतीच, बाहेर covid चं वातावरण अजूनही निवळलं नव्हतं.
“या आई, तुमचीच वाट बघत होते, गणू काका..पाणी आना..”
सासूबाईंनी सुनेचं सजवलेलं घर कौतुकाने पाहिलं. इंटेरिअर खूप छान होतं आणि कोपरा अन कोपरा अगदी स्वच्छ लखलखीत. अर्थात ही सगळी गणू काकांची मेहेरबानी, सासूबाईंना वाटायचं गणू काकाचंच कौतुक करावं.. पण उगाच शिखाला राग नको यायला, कारण ती यासाठी भरमसाठ पैसे खर्च करतच होती.
Lockdown जाहीर झाला, गणू काकांना आई आजारी असल्याने तडकाफडकी गावी जावं लागलं. शिखाला आता मात्र टेन्शन आलं, एकतर मला काही करता येत नाही आणि सासूबाईंना करायला सांगणं मला पटत नाही. तिने उरलेल्या दोन नोकरांना हे काम वाटून दिलं. शिखा आणि मानसला दोघांना work from home दिलं गेलं. मानस आयटी मध्ये असल्याने त्याला दिवसभर लॅपटॉप समोर बसावं लागे. शिखाचं काम मात्र साईट वर असल्याने work from home म्हणून तिला काहीही काम नव्हतं,नावाला म्हणून थोडंफार documentation चं काम दिलं गेलं.
एके दिवशी सासूबाई भाजीपाला घेऊन आल्या आणि आल्या या शिखाला सांगितलं,
“अगं सोसायटीने बाहेरच्या लोकांना प्रवेश अगदी बंद केलाय, नोकर मंडळींनाही प्रवेश नाहीये.”
“काय? असं कसं? मी बोलते सेक्रेटरी सोबत..”
“काही उपयोग नाही, सर्वांना निर्बंध असताना आपल्यालाच फक्त कशी परवानगी देतील?”
“अरे देवा! आता कसं होईल?”
शिखा काळजीत पडली. स्वयंपाक, भांडी, झाडू, फरशी… ही कामं कधी केली नाहीत, कशी होणार माझ्याकडून?
सासुबाई म्हणाल्या,
“शिखा काळजी करू नको,मी करेन कामं..”
“नाही आई, मला नाही पटत हे, मी करेन जमेल तसं..”
“बरं ऐक, 30 days चॅलेंज आहे एक..घेशील का?”

“सांगून तर बघा..”
“या 30 दिवसात घरातली कामं कर, व्यायाम होईल तुझा. स्वयंपाक मी शिकवेल, या कामाकडे एक व्यायाम म्हणून बघ, जास्तीत जास्त घाम गाळ..बघ तुझं वजन कसं कमी होतं ते, आणि तुला फ्रेशही वाटेल..”
या 30 दिवसात शिखाला सासूबाईंनी सगळी कामं शिकवली, स्वयंपाक शिकवला. शिखा एक व्यायाम म्हणून झाडू फरशी करू लागली, स्वयंपाक शिकताना बऱ्याच नवीन गोष्टी शिकली. आपलं घर आपल्या मेहनतीने नीटनेटकं राहतय, आपण बनवलेलं जेवण सर्वजण जेवताय हे बघून शिखाला खऱ्या अर्थाने स्वतःचं घर जाणवू लागलं. एक वेगळंच समाधान तिच्या चेहऱ्यावर चमकू लागलं. तिचं वजनही आटोक्यात आलं. आरोग्याच्या बारीक सारीक तक्रारी दूर झाल्या. सासुबाईंचा प्लॅन यशस्वी झाला.
सासुबाईंचा निरोप घेण्याची वेळ झाली. शिखाने थांबायचा आग्रह केला पण सासूबाईंना जाणं भाग होतं. शिखाने कार बुक केली अन गेटवर सासूबाईंना सोडायला गेली. मानसने बॅग्स गाडीत ठेवल्या आणि सासुबाईनी निरोप दिला.
परत येतांना शिखाला तिची शेजारीण भाजीपाला घेऊन येताना गेटवर दिसली. दोघीजणी बोलत बोलत लिफ्ट पाशी आल्या.
“सोसायटीच्या नियमांमुळे फार काम पडत असेल ना?”
“कोणता नियम?”
“बाहेरच्या लोकांना आणि नोकरांना प्रवेश बंद म्हणून..”
“कुणी सांगितलं? सर्वांकडे नोकर चाकर येणं चालू आहे..”
शिखा जागीच थबकते, गेटकडे एकदा बघते..पण तिला राग येत नाही.तिला हसू फुटतं…सासूबाईंनी मुद्दाम मला स्वावलंबी बनवण्यासाठी नोकरांना सुट्ट्या दिल्या आणि हा घाट घातला हे तिच्या लक्षात येतं. आपली सून केवळ कार्पोरेट क्षेत्रातच नव्हे तर एक गृहिणी म्हणूनही परफेक्ट असावी हा सासुबाईंचा उद्देश तिच्या लक्षात आला. मानस मात्र नजर चुकवत पळ काढतो…कारण खलबत या दोघांचंच तर होतं..!! आई तर गेली निघून, आता आपणच तावडीत सापडणार म्हणून मानस झपझप पावलं टाकत घरात लपतो..
