 घरात आलेल्या सुनेने लग्नानंतर 4 दिवस सासू सासऱ्यांचे पाय धुवून नमस्कार करायची प्रथा आजही काशीबाईच्या घरात सुरू होती. काशीबाई आज ऐंशीच्या घरात पोचलेल्या, त्यांनीही नवीन लग्न झाल्यावर ही प्रथा पाळली, त्यांच्या सुनेला म्हणजेच निर्मलालाही हेच करावं लागलेलं. आता निर्मलाच्या मोठ्या मुलाचं लग्न झालं, घरात लक्ष्मीच्या रुपी नवीन सुनबाई आली. कल्पना घरातली पहिली शिकलेली सून होती. काशीबाई प्रथांच्या बाबतीत अगदी काटेकोर, प्रथेमागे काय कारण असेल, ही प्रथा खरंच पुढे न्यावी का हा विचार न करता आपण केवळ प्रथा पुढे चालवतोय यात त्यांना फार मोठं कर्तृत्व वाटे. 

कोरोना महामारीमुळे लग्न थोडक्यात आटोपलं गेलं होतं, काशीबाई सुरवातीला ऐकतच नव्हत्या, 

“काहीही शोधून काढतात लोकं, हा आजार काय कुणालाही होतो का..50 लोकांमध्ये कधी लग्न होतं का..”

शेवटी असं केलं नाही तर दंड भरावा लागेल अशी भीती दाखवून काशीबाईंना शांत केलं गेलं अन लग्न थोडक्यात आटोपलं गेलं. निर्मलाबाई चिंतेत होत्या, सुनबाई शिकलेली.. ती पाय धुवेल का? आणि या महामारीत हे असं पाय धुणं कितपत योग्य? 

लग्नानंतरचा पहिला दिवस उजाडला, निर्मलाबाईंनी हळूच येऊन सूनबाईला सांगितलं, 

“सुनबाई, संध्याकाळी तुला सर्वांचे पाय धुवून नमस्कार करावा लागेल..अशी प्रथा आहे इथे.. खरं तर या परिस्थितीत असं काही करणं मला पटत नाही पण काशी आजी..तुला माहितीये ना? तू शिकलेली आहेस, बघ तुला जे पटतं तेच कर..”

कल्पना काहीच उत्तर देत नाही, फक्त मान डोलावुन होकार देते..

काशी आजीने दुपारच्या वेळी निर्मलाला गाठून विचारलं..

“सूनबाईला सगळं सांगितलं ना?” 

“हो सासूबाई..”

“ती करेल तवा खरं.. शिकलेल्या पोरी कशाला हात लावतील पायाला.. उलट आपल्यालाच तिचे पाय धुवावे लागतील काय माहीत..”

शिकलेल्या मुलींबद्दल असलेला गैरसमज काशीबाईंनी बोलून दाखवला. एकीकडे प्रथा पाळणारी सासू अन दुसरीकडे शिकलेली सून, निर्मला एकटी कात्रीत सापडली होती. सासूचाही अनादर करवेना आणि सुनेलाही प्रथेत अडकवता येईना..

दुपारी अचानक फोन आला, काशीबाईंच्या जवळच्या नातेवाईकाचं निधन झालेलं, मोजकीच लोकं बोलावलेली त्यात काशीबाई आणि निर्मलाचा नवरा यांना बोलावलं होतं. 

दोघेही जाऊन आले, नातेवाईकाचं कोरोना मुळेच निधन झालेलं, देहापासून बरंच लांब अंतरावर सर्वांना लांबूनच दर्शन घ्यायला लावलेलं, एकेक म्हणता बरीच गर्दी जमलेली. काशीबाई न जुमानता अखेर जवळ गेल्याच, शेवटी काही सरकारी कर्मचाऱ्यांनी त्यांना दटावलं तेव्हा त्या मागे झाल्या. मुलगा काशीबाईंना म्हणाला, 

“इथून बरेच रोगजंतू आपल्या शरीरावर बसले असतील, आज पाय धुवायचा कार्यक्रम नको करायला..”

पण ऐकते ती काशी कसली..गेल्या गेल्या सोफ्यावर पाय सोडून बसली, मुलगा आत अंघोळीला गेला..

“निर्मला, दिलीप..इकडे या..बसा इथे..”

निर्मला बाजूला बसायलाही घाबरत होती, काशीबाई कुठून आल्या आहेत याची तिला जाणीव होती..ती लांबच बसलेली..मुलगा अंघोळ करून आला आणि तोही लांब खुर्चीवर बसला..

“बघू आता, तुझी शिकलेली सून प्रथा पाळते की मोडते..एक तर फुकटचं कारण मिळालं तिला आता..पण एक सांगते, आपली परंपरा पाळताना जीव गेला तरी चालेल, पण परंपरा पाळलीच गेली पाहिजे..”

सुनबाई शिकलेली होती, अश्या अवस्थेत यांचे पाय धुवायचे म्हणजे किती रिस्की होतं हे ती जाणून होती. बराच वेळ झाला तरी कल्पना काही बाहेर आली नाही..

“पाहिलंस निर्मला..शिकलेली पोर ती, माज दाखवलाच तिनं..”

एवढ्यात कल्पना मोठ्या भांड्यात पाणी घेऊन आली, डोक्यावर पदर होता..भांडं काशीबाईच्या पायाजवळ ठेवलं आणि पाय अलगद उचलून पाण्यात ठेवले.. हातांनी चांगलं चोळून पाय पुसून दिले अन पाया पडून घेतल्या..निर्मला आणि सासऱ्यांनाही तेच केलं..निर्मलाला आनंद झालेला पण काळजीही वाटू लागली..काशीबाई सपशेल खोट्या पडल्या, पण खोटं पडल्याचा त्यांना आनंद झाला होता, शिकलेली असून सूनबाईने प्रथा मोडली नाही. काशीबाई खुश झाल्या,पण त्यांना पाण्याचा वेगळाच वास येत होता..

“सुनबाई? या पाण्याचा असा काय वास येतोय?”

“तुमच्या सारख्या देवमाणसांचे पाय साध्या पाण्याने कशी धुवेन मी? खास गंगेवरून पाणी मागवलं होतं..पावित्र्याचा संगम पवित्र्याशी झाला म्हणजे सगळं मंगलमय होतं..”

काशीबाईंना कल्पनेला कुठे ठेऊ अन कुठे नको असं झालेलं..

“देवा, मागच्या जन्मात इतकं काय पुण्य केलं मी ज्याने मला अशी सुनबाई दिलीस..धन्य आहेस देवा..”

काशीबाई जाताच निर्मला हळूच येऊन कल्पनेला सांगते, 

“प्रथा तर पाळलीस पण तुला खूप धोका आहे आता..तू अंघोळ कर जा..”

“आई, घाबरू नका…काहीही होणार नाही..”

“अगं या आजाराचं काही सांगता येत नाही..”

“म्हणूनच मी सॅनिटायझर वापरलं..पाय धुवायला..”

“म्हणजे?? हे गंगेवरून आणलेलं पाणी नव्हतं?”

“आजच्या काळात हेच पाणी सर्वात पवित्र…मला जेव्हा समजलं की सर्वजण अंत्यविधीला जाऊन आले तेव्हाच मला ही आयडिया सुचली..”

“वा सुनबाई वा..एकाच वेळी तू प्रथाही पाळलीस आणि खबरदारीही घेतलीस..शिकलेल्या मुली वाया जात नाही हेच खरं..”
