 “गीतांजली कोणत्या ब्राह्मण गुरुजींकडे जाते जरा बघा ओ..”

“कशाला??”

“मागे एकदा सांगत होती ती, गुरुजींनी व्रत दिलंय म्हणे. ते व्रत ती पाळतेय, कुणाकडून काहीही घ्यायचं नाही, अगदी ओटी सुद्धा भरून घ्यायची नाही म्हणे..फार कडक व्रत आहे..मीही करू म्हटलं..”

“तुला झेपेल का? नवी साडी नेसवणार म्हणून कायम तुझ्या पाहुण्यांकडे फेऱ्या चालूच असतात..”

“काहीही बोलू नका..खरं सांगतेय..ते व्रत केल्यापासून बघा तिची कशी भरभराट झालीये ते. लाखो रुपये महिना कमावते..मागच्या वेळी मला सोन्याची चेन करून आणली, आपल्या गोलूला ऑनलाइन अभ्यासासाठी लॅपटॉप घेऊन दिला..म्हणजे किती पैसे असतील तिच्याकडे..”

“अगं तिचा स्वभावच आहे दुसऱ्यासाठी करण्याचा..”

“मी कुठे नाही म्हणतेय, मी सगळीकडे कौतुक करत असते नणंदबाईचं.. खरंच बहिणीसारखी आहे हो मला..आपलीही तिच्यासारखी भरभराट व्हावी असं वाटलं त्यात काय चूक आहे??”

“काही चूक नाही, बरं मी करतो चौकशी..”

गीतांजली मोठ्या कष्टातून वर आलेली मुलगी. एक वेळचे खायचे हाल असतानाही तिने शिक्षण सोडलं नाही अन आज एका मोठ्या पदावर ती रुजू झाली. तिच्या पदानुसार नवराही तिला साजेसा मिळाला अन सुखाने संसार सुरू झाला. दुसऱ्यासाठी काही करण्याचा, दुसऱ्याला मदत करण्याचा तिचा स्वभाव तिने कधीही सोडला नव्हता. अगदी स्वतःकडे 10 रुपये जरी वडापाव साठी असले तरी 5च्या बिस्किटवर भागवून 5 रुपयाचा खाऊ भावाच्या मुलांसाठी घेऊन जाई. कुणाला काही देताना पैशाचा अजिबात विचार न करता समोरच्याला आनंद कसा होईल हेच बघायची, अन देवाच्या कृपेने दिलेल्याच्या चारपट तिला मिळे. 

 ती देतानाच सांगायची..

“कुलकर्णी गुरुजींनी व्रत दिलंय.. माझं व्रत सुरू आहे त्यानुसार कुणाकडून काहीही घ्यायचं नाही असा नियम आहे..”

त्यामुळे कुठेही गेली तरी ओटी भरून घ्यायची नाही, कुणाकडून साडी नेसून घ्यायची नाही ना वाढदिवसाला गिफ्ट स्वीकारायची.

घेणाऱ्याला मात्र वस्तू मिळाल्याचा आनंद व्हायचा. अश्या कित्येक आशीर्वादांची पुंजी तिने आपल्या गाठीशी बांधली होती. 

बायकोने सांगितल्याप्रमाणे भाऊ बहिणीकडे आला, बहीण अजून ऑफिसवरून आलेली नव्हती. पण भाऊ येणार म्हणून सगळी सोय करून ठेवलेली, वहिनीला 2 साड्या, भाच्यांना कपडे, दादाला महागातलं घड्याळ आधीच आणून ठेवलेलं. बहिणीचा नवरा घरीच होता, दोघेही गप्पा मारत गीतांजलीची वाट बघत बसले. भावाने त्याला विचारलं,

“तुम्हाला काही कल्पना आहे का त्या गुरुजींची? गीतू व्रत करते त्यांनी सांगितलेलं ते गुरुजी..आमची ही फार मागे लागलीय, तिलाही हे व्रत करायचं आहे म्हणे..”

“गुरुजी? छे.. आमच्या हिचा व्रत वगैरे वर विश्वास नाही.”

“असं कसं? तिने तर सांगितलेलं आम्हाला..कुणाकडून काहीही घ्यायचं नाही असा नियम आहे त्या व्रतात. “

नवऱ्याला समजतं, तो हसू लागतो..

“अच्छा… म्हणजे आमच्या बायकोने अशी थाप मारली तर..”

“म्हणजे??”

“अहो साहजिकच आहे, तिने आजवर सर्वांना महागड्या वस्तू घेतल्या, सर्वांचे पुरेपूर लाड पुरवले, पण हे करताना समोरच्याला संकट पडू नये..आपल्यालाही अशीच महागडी परतफेड करावी लागू नये म्हणून हे सगळं ..तिने कितीही नकार दिला असता तरी समोरच्याने आग्रह केलाच असता हे ती जाणून होती..म्हणूनच हा सगळा घाट..”

भावाच्या डोळ्यात पाणी तरळलं..कुणाला काही देतांना तश्याच परतफेडीची अपेक्षा करणारे, मी हजार ची साडी घेतली अन तिने हा बोळा मला नेसवला अश्या जमान्यात आपली बहीण किती वेगळी आहे म्हणून त्याला अभिमान वाटून गेला. 

“काय हो, आलात? काय सांगितलं? गुरुजींची माहिती काढली का??”

“होय..त्यांनी तुला एक व्रत दिलंय..दिवसातला अर्धा वेळ आपल्याला काय मिळालं किंवा काय मिळेल याचा विचार न करता आपण इतरांना काय दिलंय याचं चिंतन करायचं..”
