“शेतात हिंडायला आमचे आई वडील आम्हाला शूज घालून द्यायचे, गावभर हिंडल्यावर आणि ऊसाच्या शेतात खेळल्यानंतर आमच्या बुटात धसकटे घुसायची…मग आम्ही आल्यावर आई ते काढायची…अगदी तसंच मला त्या चोराने सोडून गेलेल्या बुटात दिसले.. माझ्या लक्षात आलं की हे चोर शेतकी भागातील आणि त्यातल्या त्यात उसाच्या शेतातील आहेत. म्हणून मी लँड लिस्ट मागवून उसाच्या शेताकडे गाडी घेतली, शहरात उसाची शेती मोजकी आहे…आणि हे चोर शंका येऊ नये म्हणून उगाच हातगाड्यांवर फिरत होते…मला सांगा, शेतकी भागात भंगारवाला जातो का कधी?? जातो तो बुढी के बाल वाला नाहीतर पेप्सीवाला..वस्तूंच्या बदल्यात भंगार घेतो तो..आणि हा शेतकी भाग, दारातच भाजीपाला पीकतो, अश्या ठिकाणी भाजीवाले फिरतात?? चोर ऍडपटच दिसतंय.. हे हे..”
सगळं पोलीस स्टेशन निःशब्द होतं.. मॅडम कश्याही असल्या तरी हुशार आहेत याची पोलीस स्टेशनला खात्री पटली…
मॅडम आल्यापासून पोलीस स्टेशनचा चेहराच बदलून गेला होता. पोलीस स्टेशनच्या गेटजवळ आणि आतल्या दरवाजाजवळ आता रांगोळी काढलेली असायची. आत अगरबत्ती चा सुगंध आणि घंटीचा नाद येऊ लागलेला.
शौर्या आपल्या घरची व्यवस्था लावून पोलीस क्वार्टर वर राहायला आलेली, त्यामुळे सकाळी लवकर उठून पोलीस स्टेशन तीच उघडायची..साफसफाई करायची, रांगोळी काढायची आणि मग खोलीवर जाऊन आवरून अन युनिफॉर्म घालून परत यायची.
“मॅडम, तुमची मागची पोस्टींग कुठे होती??”
“गडचिरोली..”
“बापरे…नक्षलवादी भाग..”
“हे नक्षल वगैरे सगळं झूठ आहे हो..मुळात ही लोकं का असं वागतात, त्यावर आपण काय कृती करतो हे महत्त्वाचं..”

“तर झालं असं, पहिल्या 3 ठिकाणी मला वैतागून सहकारी पोलिसांनी माझ्या बदलीसाठी तक्रार दिली..मग मला धडा शिकवावा म्हणून माझी बदली गडचिरोली मध्ये करण्यात आली..”
“तुम्हाला तिकडे चांगलाच त्रास झाला असेल..”
“अजिबात नाही…lockdown सारखी परिस्थिती असायची तिथे, बाहेर जास्त कुणी फिरकत नसायचं, घरांच्या कंपाउंड च्या भिंती 5-6 फुटा पर्यन्त बांधलेल्या…त्यामुळे घरात चोऱ्या व्हायच्या नाही, गुन्हे नोंदले जायचे नाही…मग आम्हाला काय, आरामच आराम..”
