 शौर्या ने नक्षलवाद्यांशी केलेले दोन हात ऐकून पोलिसांना शौर्याच्या शौर्याचा अंदाज आला. 

“मॅडम तुम्ही तर कमाल केलीत..”

“कमाल तर अजून करायची बाकी आहे..”

“म्हणजे??”

“सूर्यभान दळवी..”

हे नाव ऐकताच पोलीस स्टेशन मध्ये शांतता पसरते..कारण इतर कितीही मोठे गुन्हेगार पकडले असले तरी सुर्यभानला सर्वजण दचकून असत. पोलीस कधीही त्याचा वाटेला जात नसत..

कोयना वस्तीत काही महानगरपालिकेचे अधिकारी आले होते, वस्तीतील अनाधिकृत बांधकाम पाडण्याआधी या लोकांना ताकीद द्यायला ते आले होते. वस्तीतील लोकं या अधिकाऱ्यांचे एक ऐकत नव्हते. उलट त्यांना शिवीगाळ करून हाकलून लावत होते. याच एका अधिकाऱ्याने पोलीस स्टेशनला फोन लावला.

“हॅलो…पोलीस स्टेशन..मी सुरेश कांदे बोलतोय, मनपा अधिकारी..इथे कोयना वस्तीत आम्हाला सहकार्य केलं जात नाहीये आणि उलट आम्हाला शिवीगाळ होतेय..”

नाईकांनी सगळं ऐकलं..”हॅलो, हॅलो…कोण? आवाज येत नाहीये.. नंतर फोन करा..”

नाईकांना समजलं होतं, कोयना वस्तीत जाणं म्हणजे जीवाशी खेळ..नाईक मुद्दाम ते टाळत होता..

“नाईक कुणाचा फोन होता..”

“अं? काही नाही, ते…आवाज येत नव्हता नीट..”

“नाईक…सूर्यभानचं लफडं आहे का..?”

नाईक मानेनेच होकार देतात..

सूर्यभान अगदी हडकुळा, पण उंच शरीरयष्टी, धारधार नाक आणि मोठे डोळे. सावळा रंग आणि केसांना भरपूर तेल लावून अगदी कोरीव भांग पडलेला.. बघणारा त्याच्या मोठ्या डोळ्यांकडे पाहूनच गार होई. शहरात गुंडगिरी करायची, दुकानदारांकडून हफ्ता वसूल करायचा, मोठमोठे डाके टाकायचे यावर त्याचं पोटपाणी चालत असे.

“नाईक..गाडी काढा..बरं कारण मिळालं त्याला ताब्यात घ्यायला…”

“मॅडम ऐका माझं..त्याच्या वाटेला जाऊ नका…”

“नाईक..घाबरू नका..मी आहे ना..”

“मॅडम तो माणूस झटापट नाही करत..असं काही करतो की कुणीही हात टेकेल..”

“काय करतो बघतेच मी आता..”

शौर्या, नाईक आणि इतर काही पोलीस जीप मध्ये बसतात.. कोयना वस्तीत सर्वजण जाऊन बघतात..
अधिकारी तिथे एका बाजूला हतबल होऊन बसलेले असतात..वस्तीतील लोक त्यांना धमक्या देत असतात.

मागून पोलीस येतात..पोलिसांना पाहूनही वस्तीतील लोकं घाबरत नाही हे पाहून शौर्याला आश्चर्य वाटलं..

“मॅडम, सूर्यभान चा इलाका आहे हा…त्याच्या जीवावर इथली लोकं माज करतात..”

“सर्वांचा माज आत्ता उतरवते..”

“मॅडम हिरोगीरी करू नका..ऐका माझं.”

इतक्यात मागून सूर्यभान येतो..एकदम हिरो स्टाईल ने..त्याच्या गळ्यातल्या सोन्याच्या चेन चमकत असतात..पांढऱ्या शुभ्र कुर्त्यातून त्याची उंच शरीरयष्टी दिसत होती..त्याचा लुकडा अवतार पाहून ..

“ए हँगर… चल हो बाजूला..”

इतका वेळ छाती फुलवून उभा असलेला गडी ते ऐकून एकदम अपमानित झाला..कितीही म्हटलं तरी आजूबाजूचं दाबलेलं हसू त्याच्या कानावर ऐकू गेलं होतं..सुर्यभानला पहिल्यांदा असं कुणीतरी डिवचलं होतं. नाईक मागून हळूच म्हणतात,

“मॅडम, हा सूर्यभान..”

“काय रे..वेळेचं, प्रसंगाचं काही भान आहे की नाही..म्हणे सूर्यभान..”

“मॅडम…हा तो गुंड..”

नाईक मागून शौर्याला गप करण्यासाठी प्रयत्न करतात, पण सगळं व्यर्थ…

“अच्छा..तर तू होय सूर्यभान.. तुझ्याकडे बघते नंतर..तुम्ही दोघे, इकडे या..तुम्हीच फोन केलेला ना? कोण विरोध करतंय तुम्हाला? सांगा..”

सूर्यभान चवताळतो..शौर्यकडे धावत येतो…इतर पोलिस घाबरतात, कुणीही मदतीला धावत नाही..

शौर्या त्याला पाहून..

सूर्यभान घाबरलेल्या शौर्याला पाहून अजून चवताळतो…तो तिच्याकडे येत असतो अन ती मागे मागे सरकत असते..आता ती हात जोडते..

“हे बघा, माझी लहान लहान मुलं आहेत…नवरा आहे….”

सूर्यभान तिच्याजवळ येऊन म्हणतो..

“होका…बाईच्या जातीने बसावं मग घरीच…असली हिरोगीरी करायला गेलं तर अशी हालत होते..”

“नाही नाही, तुम्ही चुकीचा अर्थ घेतला..”

“कसला..”

“माझी लहान लहान मुलं आहेत, नवरा आहे…तुम्हाला जर मी लोळवलं तर घरी बोलणी बसतील..हाणामाऱ्या करून येते म्हणून..”

सूर्यभान हसायला लागतो, सगळी लोकं हसायला लागतात.. तिथे असलेल्या सर्व लोकांत हशा पिकतो..शौर्याही त्यात सामील होते…

हशा चालू असताना अचानक सूर्यभानच्या किंचाळण्याचा आवाज येतो अन गर्दी एकदम शांत होते..शौर्याने त्याच्या पोटात एकच ठोसा दिलेला असतो..

“बाई असली तरी पोलिसच आहे मी, नियत दाखवणारच..”

ते पाहून गर्दी घाबरते…शौर्या बंदूक काढून गर्दीवर रोखते . बोला अजून कुणाला विरोध करायचा आहे? समोर या..गर्दी मागे सरते.
