 शाळेत असतांना लिसा सोबत झालेली मैत्री श्रेयाच्या चांगलीच आठवणीत होती. लिसाचे वडील अँड्र्यू ब्रॅडी, एक मोठे बिझनेसमन. लिसा शाळेत असताना त्यांनी त्यांची एक शाखा भारतात सुरू केलेली आणि जवळजवळ सहा वर्षे ते भारतातच होते. या काळात लिसाला इथल्याच एका शाळेत त्यांनी भरती केलं जिथे श्रेयासोबत लिसाची चांगलीच गट्टी जमलेली. परदेशी चेहरा, इंग्रजी बोलणं यामुळे लिसा सोबत मैत्री करायला सुरवातीला कुणी तयार नव्हतं पण श्रेयाने लिसाला धीर दिला. लिसा सुद्धा आता इंग्रजी सोबत काही मराठी वाक्य आपोआप शिकत चालली होती आणि जवळपास 3-4 वर्षात तिने पूर्ण मराठी आत्मसात केली. विदेशी चेहरा नसता तर कुणी म्हटलही नसतं की ही बाहेरून आली आहे. 

लिसा श्रेयाला तिच्या घरी घेऊन जात असे. लिसाच्या घरी वातावरण अगदी मोकळं, आई वडील एकमेकांशी अगदी मोकळेपणाने बोलत..गळ्यात गळे घालून फिरत..बाहेर जाताना लिसाच्या आईला गालावर किस करून जात..श्रेयाला हे सगळं विचित्रच वाटलं..तिच्या घरी या सर्व गोष्टी टीव्ही मध्ये जरी दिसल्या तरी सर्वांना लाज वाटे. दोन्ही टोकाच्या संस्कृती श्रेया अनुभवत होती, स्वतःच्या घरात आत्यंतिक मर्यादा बाळगून वावरणारी माणसं तर दुसरीकडे लिसाच्या घरी “is this your boyfriend?” असं सहजपणे विचारणारे तिचे आई वडील. 

लिसाच्या वडिलांचं काम होताच त्यांचं कुटुंब अमेरिकेत परतलं. मैत्रिणीला सोडून जाताना दोघींना दुःखं होत होतं पण मेल, फोन द्वारे दोघींनी संपर्क ठेवायचा कबूल केलं. काही वर्षांनी फेसबुकवर दोघी कनेक्ट झाल्या. श्रेयाच्या मनात नेहमीच लिसा आणि तिच्या कुटुंबा बद्दल आकर्षण होतं. दोघी ऑनलाइन येऊन बोलत असायच्या..

“हाय लिसा, कशी आहेस?”

“मी मजेत..तू?”

“माझं लग्न ठरलंय..तुला यावं लागेल..”

“नक्की..”

लिसाला लग्नाचं आमंत्रण मिळालं तशी ती दोन दिवस आधी आली.येताना तिचा बॉयफ्रेंड तिने सोबत आणलेला. जॉन नाव त्याचं. श्रेया आणि तिच्या घरच्यांना अवघडल्यासारखं झालं पण ती अमेरिकेत राहते म्हणून त्यांनी समजून घेतलं. श्रेया लग्न करून भारतीय व्यवस्थेप्रमाणे सासरी गेली. तिथे संसाराला सुरवात केली आणि प्रत्येक भारतीय स्त्री प्रमाणे काहीसा सासुरवास, दुःखं, संकटं, निराशा तसंच काहीसं सुखही तिच्याही पदरी सम प्रमाणात आलं. पण हे आयुष्य जगत असताना तिला लिसाच्या आयुष्याचा हेवा वाटे, लिसाने आई वडिलांचं घर कधीच सोडलं होतं. नोकरी करून स्वतः कमवत होती, भाड्याने खोली घेऊन राहत होती. हवं तेव्हा आपल्या मित्राला घरी बोलवी, कुणी अडवणार नव्हतं. मित्राशी भांडण झालं की लगेच ब्रेकप, मग दुसऱ्या प्रेमाच्या शोधात…ना कसल्या जबाबदाऱ्या, ना कुणाचा सासुरवास.. आपलं आयुष्य आपल्या मर्जीप्रमाणे ती जगत होती..

“आपलंही आयुष्य असंच असतं तर? आपल्यालाही असंच स्वातंत्र्य असतं तर?”

“श्रेया बेडरूममध्ये झाडू नाही मारला का? आत्ताशी झाडून व्हायला हवं होतं..” सासुबाईंचा आवाज आला..

श्रेयाला प्रचंड राग आला..कुठे लिसाचं स्वच्छंद आयुष्य आणि कुठे पिंजऱ्यात अडकलेलं आपलं आयुष्य. पुढच्या जन्मी मला अमेरिकेतच जन्माला घाल असं ती देवाला सांगू लागली.

वर्ष सरत गेली, श्रेया संसारात रुळली..नवऱ्याकडून उशिरा का असेना प्रेम मिळू लागलेलं. संसारवेलीवर कन्यारुपी फुल बहरलं..ती बऱ्यापैकी खुश होती. अश्यातच एके दिवशी दारात अचानक लिसा येऊन ठेपली. तिच्या कडेवर एक दीड वर्षाचं मूल. लिसाला बघताच श्रेया आनंदली, तिला मिठी मारली आणि आत घेतलं. लिसाही खूप आनंदात होती, खूप वर्षांनी श्रेयाशी भेट घडून आली होती..

लिसा अन श्रेया सारख्याच वयाच्या, पण लिसाच्या चेहऱ्यावर जरा जास्तच सुरकुत्या दिसत होत्या. दोघींनी जुन्या आठवणींना उजाळा दिला, बऱ्याच गप्पा मारल्या..नंतर चालू आयुष्यावर चर्चा सुरू झाली..

“लिसा..खरं सांगू? मला कायम वाटायचं की मलाही तुझ्यासारखं आयुष्य असायला हवं होतं..स्वतःसाठी जगायचं, मनाप्रमाणे वागायचं..मी तर देवाकडे प्रार्थना करते की मला तुझ्या देशात पुढील जन्म मिळू देत..”

“चुकूनही असा विचार करू नकोस..भारतात लग्नसंस्थेते इतकी सुरक्षितता स्त्रियांना कुठेही नाही…”

“म्हणजे??”

“हा माझा मुलगा..डोनाल्ड..जॉन नंतर तीन बॉयफ्रेंड बदलले मी..शेवटचा बॉयफ्रेंड स्मिथ..त्याच्यापासून मला दिवस गेले..पण ते कळायच्या आत आमचं ब्रेकप झालं आणि तो दुसऱ्या मुलीसोबत मुव्ह ऑन झाला..मला जेव्हा समजलं तेव्हा मी त्याच्याकडून मदत मागितली..आपण लग्न करू, जुनं विसरून जाऊ म्हणत गयावया केल्या पण त्याला त्याच्या नवीन गर्लफ्रेंड मध्ये इंटरेस्ट वाढत चाललेला. त्याने स्पष्टपणे नकार तर दिलाच, वर हा मुलगा माझाच आहे कशावरून असे आरोप केले..मी एकटीने मुलाला वाढवायचं ठरवलं..आमच्याकडे आई वडीलही बाळंतपण करत नाही गं, सगळं डॉक्टर आणि नर्स बघतात तेही पैसे मिळाले की..आई वडील पाहुण्यासारखे येऊन फक्त भेटून जातात..तुमच्या सारखं माहेराचं सुख आणि बाळंतपनाचे कौतुक नसतंच..तरुणपणात स्वच्छंद जगून झालेलं, भरपूर मजा करून झालेली, कुणी रोखायला नाही म्हणून टोकाच्या गोष्टी करत गेलो.. पण जेव्हा खरं आयुष्य समोर आलं तेव्हा फक्त असुरक्षितता समोर..दीड वर्षे नोकरी करून मी डोनाल्डला कसं सांभाळलं मला माहित..स्मिथ आता डोनाल्ड ची कस्टडी मागतोय..इतकी वर्षे नाकारलं आणि आता हक्क दाखवतोय..आता पूर्ण आयुष्य पश्चात्ताप, निराशा, कोर्टात फेऱ्या आणि डोनाल्डला गमावण्याची भीती यात जाणार…मग आता ठरव तुला कुठे जन्म घ्यायचा आहे? अगं तिथे कपडे बदलतात तसा पार्टनर बदलतात..आज हा उद्या तो..कमिटमेंट केली तरी त्यावर कंट्रोल कुणाचाही नसतो..तुमच्याकडे एकदा लग्न लावलं की आयुष्यभर तडजोड करत जा होईना साथ द्यावीच लागते, एखाद्याने जोडीदाराचा विश्वासघात केला तर समाज त्याला जगू देत नाही, आपल्या जोडीदारासोबत प्रामाणिक राहणं त्याला भाग असतं. मुलं झाली की त्याची जबाबदारी दोघांनी उचलणं भाग असतं.. मग मुलाला कितीही नको असलं आणि बाहेर कितीही मोहाचे क्षण आले तरी तुमचा समाज, तुमचा देश त्याला बंधनात ठेऊन सरळमार्गी लावतो..स्त्रीला याहून मोठी सुरक्षितता काय असेल? जे स्वातंत्र्य असुरक्षितता देत असेल ते काय कामाचं? याउलट थोड्याफार बंधनात राहून जोडीदाराबाबत निर्धास्त राहणं चांगलं नाही का?”

(आज समाजात लिव्ह इन चे प्रस्थ वाढत चाललेय.. आम्ही मॉडर्न आहोत, मुक्त विचारसरणीचे आहोत म्हणून दिखावा वाढत चाललाय. लग्नसंस्थेवरचा विश्वास कमी होत जातोय..पण यातून निष्कर्ष एकच निघतो…लिव्ह इन मध्ये राहून विभक्त होणारी जोडपी पुढे आयुष्यभर असुरक्षित राहतात..आयुष्याच्या नैसर्गिक प्रवाहालाच त्यांनी आव्हान देऊन स्वतःची अधोगती स्वीकारलेली असते)
