सासूबाईंच्या अश्या अचानक जाण्याने पूर्ण कुटुंब विस्कळीत झालं होतं. करुणा ला मिस्टरांकडून खबर कळताच दोघेही आपल्या मुलांसकट गावी रवाना झाली.
गावातल्या त्यांच्या घरासमोर प्रचंड गर्दी जमलेली, रडारड सुरू होती. करुणा च्या 3 देराण्या, दिर आणि सासरेबुवा सासूबाईंच्या भोवती बसलेले…सासरेबुवा धक्क्याने सुन्न पडलेले..तिघेही दिर आणि त्यांच्या बायका डोळ्यातलं पाणी पुसत होत्या…पण त्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावर दुःखासोबतच एक भीती दिसत होती…ती कसली होती? करुणा ला काही समजलं नाही…

कसं समजणार, तिचा नवरा राघवेंद्र… मार्केटिंग चा जॉब, सतत बदल्या होत असायच्या..राघवेंद्र ने नोकरी सोडायची ठरवली अन सासऱ्यांनी त्याला विरोध केला…तुला नोकरी सोडता येणार नाही, मी तुला परवानगी देणार नाही…तुला जावंच लागेल…पितृआज्ञा शिरोधार्य…आणि मग करुणा ला सुद्धा या बदलीला सामोरं जावं लागलं…अगदी वनवासात रामा पाठोपाठ सीता गेली अगदी तशीच….

लग्न झालं अन काही दिवसातच राघवेंद्र ची बदली एका मोठ्या शहरात झाली. फार कमी काळ तिने सासू सासऱ्यांसोबत घालवला होता… पण एवढ्याश्या काळात सुद्धा सासूबाईंनी तिला आईची माया दिली…
त्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावर कायम चिंता असायची, त्या म्हणायच्या..

“माझी मुलं…चार भावंडं…आज लहान आहेत म्हणून एकत्र राहताय…उद्या दुनियादारीत अडकले तर…कुटुंब विस्कळीत होईल…माझी चार मुलं हीच माझी संपत्ती…सर्वजण एकत्र राहिले तरच प्रगती होईल..एकीचे बळ असं शिकवलं होतं लहानपणी… पण ती गोष्ट ही मुलं विसरणार तर नाही ना? तू थोरली सून…फार मोठी जबाबदारी आहे तुझ्यावर.. तू चांगली निघालीस…पण बाकीच्यांना कश्या बायका मिळतील? त्या घर जोडून ठेवतील? राम, लक्ष्मण, भरत आणि शत्रुघ्न सारखी माझी चार मुलं.. नातेवाईक म्हणायचे खरंच ही चौघे तशीच आहेत… पण पाया मजबूत असला तरच रामराज्य घडेल….तुम्ही चौघे एकत्र रहा..कामानिमित्त बाहेरगावी गेले तरी मनाने इथेच रहा…सर्वांना जोडून ठेवा… समाजासमोर एक अलौकिक उदाहरण तयार करा…आजकाल कुणीही एकत्र राहत नाही, तुम्ही या संकल्पनेला छेद द्या…आणि सर्वांनी मिळून असं काहीतरी करून दाखवा की लोकांनी तुमच्या साम्राज्याला….तुमच्या रामराज्याला नमस्कार केला पाहिजे..”

सासूबाईंचे ते शब्द करुणा च्या डोक्यात घुमत होते.. आणि सासूबाईंशी शेवटचा झालेला कॉल तिला आठ्वला..

“आई…सर्व ठीक आहे ना तिकडे?”

“राज्यातला रामच निघून गेला असेल तर काय उरतं…”

करुणा ला समजलं, की घरात काहीतरी बिनसलय… कारण ते शहरात बरीच वर्षे असताना तिघ्या दिरांची लग्न झालेली होती…करुणा आणि राघवेंद्र ची बरीच धावपळ झालेली ही तिन्ही लग्न उरकताना… करुणा जरा निर्धास्त झाली होती… कारण सासूबाईंना आता 3 सोबतीण आलेल्या…करुणा जेमतेम शिकलेली, पण प्रचंड संसारी…बाकीच्या तिन्ही देराण्या मात्र चांगल्या शिकलेल्या….बोल्ड आणि स्मार्ट…

घरात नेमकं काय झालं असेल? सासूबाईंना हृदयाचा त्रास होता..ताणतणाव त्यांना सहन होत नव्हता…मग त्यांचं अचानक जाणं??? तिला शंका येऊ लागली..की घरात नक्की काहीतरी घडलं असणार, त्याशिवाय एरवी सासुबाईं टेन्शन घेत नसायच्या…

सासूबाईंना अग्नी देण्यात आला…त्या अग्नी मध्ये करुणाला सासूबाईंच्या भस्मसात झालेल्या ईच्छा आणि स्वप्न दिसू लागली…आणि जबाबदारीची एक मोठी कळ तिच्या शरीरात घुसली..

आता करुणा वर जबाबदारी होती…
