 “तुकारामांनंतर तुम्हीच..लोकं त्यांचं बघून घेतील, तुम्ही आपलं बघा”

असं म्हणत ती तुटपुंज्या पगारावर घर चालवत असायची,

बायको लवकर गेली, मास्तर एकटे पडले,

पण आपलं काम सोडलं नाही,

खेड्यापाड्यात जाऊन, आदिवासी मुलांना शाळेत नेत,

घरच्यांना तयार करत,

कितीदा लोकांचे टोमणे ऐकले,

एकवेळ मारही खाल्ला,

पण या मुलांना शिक्षण मिळावं म्हणून स्वतः मुलांच्या घरी जाऊन त्यांची दप्तरं उचलत ते शाळेत जात,

जीव लावून शिकवत,

“खूप मोठे व्हा, घरची परिस्थिती बदला”

असं ते नेहमी सांगत,

त्यांच्या फार काही गरजा नव्हत्या,

पण एकच स्वप्न होतं,

विदेशात जायची संधी मिळावी,

पुस्तकात, चित्रात पाहिलेले भव्य देश डोळ्याखालून घालावे,

हे स्वप्न पूर्ण होणार नव्हतं आणि त्यासाठी त्यांचा अट्टहासही नव्हता,

आदिवासी पाड्यात शिकवणाऱ्या, छोट्याश्या झोपडीत राहणाऱ्या आणि मुलबाळ नसलेल्या मास्तरांना कोण घेऊन जाईल परदेशात?

आता रिटायर झाल्याने मास्तरांना दिवस खायला उठू लागला,

सकाळी डोळे उघडले की पूर्ण दिवसाचं संकट त्यांना पडायचं,

आयुष्यभर मुलांना शिकवण्यात वेळ घालवला,

आता हे आरामदायी जीवन त्यांना नकोसं झालेलं,

सकाळी उठल्यावर असंच एकदा दूध आणायला गेलेले,

बाजूला एक इलेक्ट्रॉनिक चं दुकान होतं,

त्यावर सकाळच्या बातम्या लागायच्या,

मास्तर  तेवढ्या बघून घरी यायचे,

आज बातमीत त्यांना असं काही दिसलं की त्यांना हसू फुटलं,

अमेरिकेच्या एका शैक्षणिक संस्थेला राणे इन्स्टिट्यूट म्हणून नाव दिलेलं,

चला आपण नाही पण आपलं नाव तरी परदेशात झळकलं,

मास्तर कारण नसतांना खुश झाले,

घरी आले अन दैनंदिन कामं त्यांनी केली,

काही दिवसांनी असंच रस्त्याने जात असताना एक मोठी कार त्यांच्यासमोर थांबली,

एक मुलगा त्यातून उतरला,

तो मास्तरांना निरखून बघत होता, त्याने ओळखलं,

“राणे मास्तर?”

मास्तर चष्मा नीट करत त्याला ओळखण्याचा प्रयत्न करू लागले, पण काही आठवेना,

“मास्तर मी, गणेश… तुमचा गण्या…”

मास्तरांना पुसट काहीसं आठवू लागलं,

आदिवासी पाड्यातला गणेश,

अभ्यासात प्रचंड हुशार,

पण आई वडील शाळेत पाठवायला नाही म्हणायचे,

मास्तर रोज त्याच्याकडे जात,
