 सहेली मंचाच्या कार्यक्रमाला पन्नाशीच्या बायका एकत्र जमल्या होत्या. आयुष्यभर नवरा, मुलं, सासू, सासरे यांच्यातून आता कुठे या बायकांना उसंत मिळाली होती, भरपूर वेळ आता मिळू लागला. आता या वेळेचा कुठेतरी सदुपयोग करावा म्हणून सहेली मंचात या महिलांनी सदस्यत्व घेतलं. इथे विविध प्रकारचे उपक्रम, खेळ, व्याख्यान हे सगळं महिलांना आवडत होतं. नवनवीन मैत्रिणी मिळत होत्या, नवनवीन अनुभव येत होते. आजवर जबाबदारीच्या ओझ्याने दबलेल्या महिलांना मोकळं आभाळ मिळत होतं. 

कितीही त्यांनी स्वतःला गुंतवले तरी संसारातील त्यांचं चित्त काही कमी होत नव्हतं. मुलगा, सून, त्यांचा संसार, त्यात ढवळाढवळ, नातवंड, उणीदुणी याला त्या अजूनही चिकटून होत्या. 

सहेली मंचात एकदा एक व्याख्यान आयोजित केलं गेलं. स्त्रीवादी विषय असल्याने महिला आवर्जून सहभागी होत होत्या. साठीतील एक अनुभवी आणि अभ्यासू महिला व्याख्यान देणार होती. व्याख्यानाला बरीच गर्दी जमली, सर्वांनी आपापली जागा सांभाळून घेतली. व्याख्यातेचं मंचावर आगमन झाले आणि सर्वांनी टाळ्या वाजवल्या. त्यांनी व्याख्यान सुरू केलं..

“एक स्त्री म्हणून तुम्हा आम्हाला कोणत्या दिव्यातून जावं लागलं हे नव्याने सांगायला नको. आपली पिढी तशी लाजाळू, मोठ्यांसमोर अन्यायाला वाचा फोडण्याची ताकद आणि शिकवण दोन्ही आपल्यात नव्हते.आज अश्याच काही स्त्रीवादी गोष्टींवर आपण चर्चा करणार आहोत. हे केवळ एक व्याख्यान नसून एक चर्चासत्र आहे. सर्वांनी याची आपापल्या परीने उत्तरं द्यावी..”

सर्वजणी थोड्या घाबरल्या, ऐकायला सोपं पण बोलायचं म्हटलं की महिलांच्या पोटात गोळा उठायचा. प्रश्न विचारला गेला..

“समजा..साधारण 35-40 वर्षांपूर्वी, जेव्हा आपली लग्न झाली, त्या काळात जाऊन जर गोष्टी बदलायच्या असतील तर तुम्ही कोणती गोष्ट बदलली असती?”

सर्वजणी विचारात पडल्या, लग्न झाल्याचा काळ सर्वांना आठवू लागला..एका महिलेने धीर करत उत्तर दिलं..

“मी नवराच बदलला असता..”

या उत्तराने एकच हशा पिकला..

“बरं.. छान.. अजून??”

हळूहळू एकेकजणी बोलू लागल्या..

“मी पहिल्या दिवसापासूनच माझ्या सासूला धाकात ठेवलं असतं. मान खाली घालत सगळं ऐकत गेले आणि आयुष्यभर ऐकावं लागलं..”

बाकीच्यांनी हो ला हो मिळवलं..

“मी लग्न होताच सांगितलं असतं, की सासूबाई धडधाकट आहेत.स्वतःची कामं स्वतः करावी, सगळं हातात देत गेले अन शेवटपर्यंत पुरलं..”

“मी आधीच सांगितलं असतं, दिवसभर साडीत राहून काम जमणार नाही,  घरात निदान गाऊन तरी घालेन..”

“मी माझ्या नवऱ्याला लग्न झाल्या झाल्या सांगितलं असतं, की एकत्र राहायला मला परवडणार नाही. एकटी बाई काम करणार आणि 9 माणसं आयतं बसणार, कामं करून करून इतकी झीज झालीय की आता दुखणी असह्य होताय, तेव्हाच सांगितलं असतं तर..”

“मी सरळ सांगितलं असतं, मी शिकून नोकरी करणार, घरातलं सासूबाईंनी करावं नाहीतर बाई लावून घ्यावी..दोन्ही कामं करायला मी मशीन नाही..”

“मला लग्नानंतर शिक्षणाचं कबूल केलं होतं, पण लग्न झालं आणि रंग बदलला..तेव्हाच भांडले असते तर आज शिकून मोठे झाले असते..”

“माझ्या नवऱ्याला आणि मला कधीही खाजगीपणा मिळाला नाही, सासूची प्रत्येक गोष्टीत ढवळाढवळ.. तेव्हाच सुनावलं असतं तर बरं झालं असतं.. ते दिवस परत येत नाहीत. “

सर्वांना असा चेव आलेला की किती बोलू अन किती नको असं झालं. जुनी दुखणी सर्वांना आठवू लागली अन सल आगीप्रमाणे बाहेर निघू लागली.

महिलेने सर्व शांतपणे ऐकून घेतलं, आणि सर्वांचं झाल्यावर सांगितलं..

“तुम्ही त्या काळात हे सगळं केलं असतं तर आज तुम्ही सुखी असता असं वाटतंय ना? मग याच चुका आपल्या सुनांच्या बाबतीत होऊ नये म्हणून कितीजणी काळजी घेतात?”

सर्वजणी विचारात पडल्या. जी गोष्ट त्यांनी सहन केलेली तीच सुनेने सहन करावी हाच अट्टहास होता, ती बदलावी असं कुणालाही वाटत नव्हतं.

“तुमच्या सुनाही तुमच्यासारख्याच 30-40 वर्षापूर्वीचं जगताय.. त्यांनाही कदाचित खूप वर्षांनी वाटेल की आपण असं बोललो असतो तर? तुम्ही काय काय म्हणालात ते सुनेला करू द्याल? पहिल्या दिवसापासून सुनेच्या धाकाखाली राहाल? सासूबाईंनी स्वतःची कामं स्वतः करावी हे तुमच्या बाबतीत कराल? सुनेला मानाजोगते कपडे घालू द्याल? तिने एकत्र कुटुंबास नकार दिल्यास मान्य कराल? तिने नोकरी स्वीकारत घरातली कामं सासुबाईं अथवा मदतनीस बाईला द्यायची ठरवली तर मान्य कराल? तिने पुढे शिकायचं ठरवलं तर पाठिंबा द्याल? मुलगा आणि सून यांच्या संसारात ढवळाढवळ करणार नाही याची काळजी घ्याल??”

सर्वजणी एकदम शांत झाल्या, सुनेच्या भूमिकेतून एकदम सासूच्या भूमिकेत शिरल्यावर सर्वांचा रंग बदलला. कुणाच्याही चेहऱ्यावर स्वतःला बदलण्याची किंवा उपरतीची रेषा नव्हती. व्याख्यान संपलं, आणि घरी जाऊन सर्वांनी आयत्या जेवणावर ताव मारून त्यातली उणीदुणी काढत दिवस संपवला..
