स्वतःचा गळा आवळून घ्यायला साधा दोरही त्याला घरात सापडत नव्हता. घराबाहेर पडण्याइतपत त्याच्यात शारीरिक अन मानसिक त्राणही उरले नव्हते. मग मरणाला काही दिवस पुढे ढकललं. शॉपिंग साईटवरून हा दोर ऑर्डर करावा म्हणून तो मोबाईलवर बोटं फिरवू लागला. मरणाला जवळ करताना आयुष्याचा पूर्ण पट त्याच्या डोळ्यासमोरून गेला. काशीत गेलेलं त्याचं बालपण, शाळा, वडिलांचं कॉम्प्युटर चं दुकान, शहरात झालेलं कॉलेज, इथेच ईशानीसोबत झालेली भेट अन नंतर लग्न, सॉफ्टवेअर इंजिनिअर म्हणून केलेली नोकरी, लहानग्या अविरचा जन्म, ईशानीशी सततची भांडणं, नोकरीवर आलेला कामाचा ताण, ईशाणीने पाठवलेले फारकतीचे पेपर्स, डोळ्यासमोर सतत येणारा अविरचा चेहरा..इतक्यात मोबाईलची रिंगटोन वाजली.

जाता जाता वडिलांची ही ईच्छा पूर्ण करून जावी म्हणून त्याने मरण अजून लांबवलं, “काशीला जाऊन येऊ, जमलं तर तिथेच स्वतःचा कडेलोट करून घेऊ..”
मरणाचा मार्ग अगदी पक्का होता,कारण आयुष्यात काही सुरळीत होईल अशी पुसटशीही आशा उरली नव्हती. तिकीट काढून तो काशीला रवाना झाला.
काशीचं ते सौंदर्य, ते धार्मिक वातावरण, माणसांची वर्दळ याचा काडीमात्र फरक सारंगवर पडत नव्हता. वडिलांच्या इच्छेप्रमाणे घराला भेट देऊन यायची, अगदी शेवटची.. अन परस्पर वडिलांच्या भेटीसाठी अनंताच्या मार्गावर रवाना व्हायचं..
काशीला आपल्या घरापाशी पोचताच त्याला माणसांची गर्दी दिसली. मधोमध पांढऱ्या वस्त्रात गुंडाळून ठेवलेलं पार्थिव होतं अन आजूबाजूला मुलं, नातवंडं, सुना रडत होत्या. गुलाबकाका असावेत, फार वय झालेलं त्यांचं. सारंगने जवळ जाऊन त्यांचं दर्शन घेतलं अन तो मागे फिरला. काकांच्या जाण्याने रडणारे चेहरे काही क्षण सारंगकडे आश्चर्याने बघत होते, कधीही इकडे न फिरकणारा माणूस आज चक्क काकांच्या अंतिम दर्शनाला?? त्यांना सारंगच्या येण्यामागचं प्रयोजन कुठे माहीत होतं. काकाचं दर्शन घेताना सारंगला तो क्षण अगदी जवळचा वाटत होता, जो क्षण काकांच्या वाटेला आलेला, लवकरच तो आपल्या वाटेला येणार म्हणून सारंग नेत्रपटल न लावता बघतच होता. गर्दीतून एकजण त्याच्या चौकशीसाठी आला, इतक्या गर्दीतही इतका शिकलेला, सुटा बुटातला माणूस खुलून दिसला नसेल तर नवलच. त्या माणसाला सारंगने येण्याचं प्रयोजन सांगितलं आणि त्याच्या घराची चावी जवळच्या म्हात्रे गुरुजींकडे आहे असं सांगून तो त्याला घेऊन गेला.
सारंग घरी पोचला, घर बघताच त्याच्या जुन्या आठवणी जाग्या झाल्या, घराच्या शांत भिंती, लोप पावलेला तो फोडणीचा सुगंध, भकास खिडक्या..
“आई..बाबा..मी आलोय..भूषण, अरे कुठेस? पारावर जायचंच ना आपल्याला?? आई, आज मस्त भरीत अन कढी कर..बाबा, मला दुकानात घेऊन जाल ना??”
मोठ्याने ओरडून सारंग घराला पुन्हा जिवंत करायचा निरर्थक प्रयत्न करत होता..बोलता बोलता तो जमिनीवर बसला अन रडू लागला..हा एकांत, ही सल मरणापेक्षाही खूप भयानक होती. त्याने स्वतःला कसंबसं सावरलं अन तिथून निघाला..
मनात विचारांचा कहर माजला होता, बोलता बोलता तो एका मंदिरापाशी कसा पोचला त्यालाच कळलं नाही. शरीर थकल्याने मंदिरापाशी असलेल्या पाण्याजवळ तो गेला अन पाणी पिऊन मंदिराच्या पायऱ्यांवर बसला. तिथे अजून एक साधू ध्यान लावून बसला होता. सारंगकडे पाहून तो म्हणाला..
“जा दर्शन घेऊन ये आतून..”
“नको..”
“का??”
“आता कायमचं जाणार आहे त्याच्या दर्शनाला..”
“तू असं कदापि करणार नाही..”
“सांत्वनाने काय होणार..”
“सांत्वन नाही बाळ, तू मेलास तरी माझ्या बापड्याचं काय जातंय, पण मी माझ्या दृष्टीतून सांगतो..तुझं एक काम अजून बाकी आहे..”
“कुठलं?? तू भविष्याचं भाकीत करशील..”
सारंगला साधूच्या वेडेपणाचं हसू येतं..
“बाबा…मी कुणी पंडित किंवा ब्राह्मण नाही जो भविष्य सांगेन..सॉफ्टवेअर इंजिनिअर आहे मी…हे काम तुमच्या सारख्या साधुचं..”
“भविष्याचं भाकीत करायला हुद्दा नाही, दृष्टी लागते. कुणी ती अध्यात्मातून प्राप्त करतं, कुणी विज्ञानातून तर कुणी तंत्रज्ञानातुन…तुही करशील…तुही करशील. आमच्याकडे ध्यानयोग आहे, तुझ्याकडे artificial intelligence..आमच्याकडे अनुभव आहे, तुमच्याकडे machine learning…सांगड घाल पोरा..जगाचं भलं कर…एकमेवाद्वितीय काम होईल तुझ्याकडून.. बस ही वेळ फक्त सावर… लोकं स्वतःचा अभ्यास करतात, तू आयुष्यांचा अभ्यास कर..”
असं म्हणत साधू निघून जातो..
