पोलीस खात्यात कामाला असलेले देशमुख आज शहरातील महत्वाच्या कार्यक्रमस्थळी सुरक्षेच्या जबाबदारीत जाणार होते. नवीनच निवडून आलेले मंत्री शहरात प्रथमच येणार होते, शहरात सर्वत्र सुरक्षा, बंदोबस्त केला गेला होता. देशमुख गाडीतून उतरताच जिथे कार्यक्रम होता तिथल्या जागेची पाहणी केली, काही वेळातच मंत्री महोदय आले, देशमुखांनी नियमाप्रमाणे त्यांना सलाम केला, हे करतांना त्यांच्या डोळ्यासमोर माऊ आली, ती मैत्रिणींना सांगत असायची की “माझ्या बाबांना सर्वजण सलाम ठोकतात..” देशमुखांना हसू आलं, कार्यक्रम होईस्तोवर देशमुखांनी चोख काम केलं, मंत्री महोदय कुणाकडेही न बघता निघून गेले आणि इकडे हॉल वर बाकीची आवराआवर सुरू झाली. तिथे अनेक दिग्गज लोकं आली होती, सर्वजण आपापल्या महागड्या कार काढत परतत होते. त्यांना बघून काही भिकारी हात पुढे करत भिक मागायला पुढे आले, देशमुखांनी एकेकाला हटकले..ते काही जुमानत नव्हते, देशमुखांनी शेवटी लाठीचा धाक दाखवत त्यांना तिथून पळवलं पण एका भिकाऱ्या कडे मात्र त्यांनी सपशेल दुर्लक्ष केलं. त्या भिकाऱ्यालाही समजेना की इतरांना हकलत असतांना माझ्यावर इतकी दया का? शेवटी सगळे भिकारी तिथून निघून गेले पण तो एक भिकारी अजूनही तिथेच होता, देशमुखांनी त्याला सन्मानाने हात जोडून बाजूला होण्यास सांगितलं.. कुणालाच कळेना देशमुख असं का करताय..
काही वेळाने त्यांचे सहकारी पोलीस पवार तिथे आले आणि त्यांनी विचारले,
“या भिकाऱ्यावर इतकी मेहेरबानी का देशमुख साहेब?”
देशमुख साहेबांनी डोक्यावरचा चष्मा काढला, खिशातून रुमाल काढत चष्मा पुसता पुसता पवारांना सांगू लागले..
“नुसता भिकारी असता तर कधीच हकलला असता, पण नीट बघा, त्याच्या खांद्यावर त्याची जी लहान मुलगी बसलिये ना, तिला वाटतंय की आपल्या बापाचा खांदा जगातला सर्वात सुरक्षित खांदा आहे..माणूस कुणीही असो, भिकारी असो वा राजा..पण जर तो बाप असेल तर मुलांसाठी त्याच्याहुन मोठा कुणीही नसतो..मला त्या भिकाऱ्याला हाकलून लावून त्या पोरीच्या नजरेतील बाप उतरवायचा नव्हता..त्याला हात जोडून विनंती केली तेव्हा त्या पोरीच्या नजरेत बापाबद्दलच्या गर्वाला तडा गेला नाही…भिकाऱ्याला हकलायला 2 सेकंद लागले असते, पण त्या 2 सेकंदामुळे त्या पोरीच्या मनातून बाप कायमचा उतरला असता..”
देशमुखांच्या या बोलण्याने पवारांच्याही डोळ्यात पाणी आलं, कारण बापाची आब कशी राखली जाते हे सकाळीच देशमुखांनी मुलीकडून शिकलं होतं..
