विशाखा नवऱ्यासोबत शहरात आली तसं तिचं व्यक्तिमत्वच बदलून गेलं. छोट्याश्या खेडेगावात वाढलेली ती, काकांनी ओळखीतलं स्थळ आणलं आणि सगळ्या गोष्टी बघून विशाखाच्या आई वडिलांनी होकार देऊन टाकला. विशाखाला विचारण्याची गरजही त्यांना वाटली नाही. विशाखा हो ला हो लावत बोहल्यावर चढली, कारण त्या काळात आणि त्या गावात मुलींना स्वतःचं मत असं नव्हतंच.

पण आई वडिलांचा निर्णय खरा ठरला, विशाखा चा नवरा सुशील, नावाप्रमाणेच नम्र, सभ्य आणि प्रेमळ. सुशील शहरात वाढलेला, मोठमोठ्या लोकांमध्ये त्याची उठबस असायची, पण बायकोला खेड्यातली म्हणून त्याने कधीच तिरस्कार केला नाही..त्याला कधीही तिची लाज वाटली नाही. कुठल्याही कार्यक्रमाला तो तिला सोबत नेई, तेव्हा असे कपडे घाल, असा मेकअप कर असं त्याने कधीच बंधन घातलं नाही. आपली बायको जशी आहे तशी तिने जगासमोर यावं, तिच्या मनानुसार राहावं असा त्याचा स्वभाव. पण विशाखाने स्वतःहून आसपासच्या वातावरणाला साजेसं आपल्यात बदल घडवला होता.

राजा राणीचा संसार सुखाचा सुरू होता, सुशीलला चांगला पगार होता, स्वतःसाठी असं त्याने काहीच केलं नव्हतं, विशाखा खुश राहावी, तिची सगळी स्वप्न पूर्ण व्हावी हेच त्याला वाटत असे.

पण विशाखाला या गोष्टीची जाणीव नव्हती, तिला वाटायचं सगळे नवरे जे करतात तेच हा करतोय, काय वेगळं आहे त्यात?

सुशीलने स्वतःचं घर घेतलं, विशाखाच्या मनानुसार सगळ्या वस्तू घेतल्या..कारण ती गृहलक्ष्मी होती…

नव्या सोसायटीत अनेक उच्चभ्रू स्त्रिया होत्या, त्यांच्या सतत किटी पार्टी चालत असे, त्यात आता विशाखाही सामील झालेली. या पार्टीत एकमेकांचे कपडे, दागिने बघून हेवा करणे, आपल्याकडे किती पैसा आहे याचे प्रदर्शन या पार्टीत होत असे..विशाखाला सुद्धा याची झळ लागली, ती सुशील कडे बऱ्याच गोष्टी मागू लागली, खर्च वाढू लागला..पण सुशीलने स्वतावरचा खर्च बंद करत विशाखाला हवं ते पुरवलं..

खर्च वाढला, पगार पुरेना..म्हणूनच सुशील ओव्हरटाईम करू लागला..आपण बायकोला सुखात कसं ठेवू शकतो यासाठी तो स्वतःच्या जिवाकडेही पाहत नव्हता..

एकदा किटी पार्टीत एक बाई मधोमध बसलेली आणि बाकी सर्वजणी तिची समजूत घालत होत्या, विशाखा तिथे जाताच तिने काय झालं म्हणून विचारलं..

“काय सांगू आता, माझा नवरा दुसऱ्या बाईच्या मागे आहे..सगळे पैसे तिच्यावर उडवतो..घरात पैसे देत नाही..मला म्हणतो की तुला पैसा कमवायची काडीची अक्कल नाही.. आयतं बसून खाते फक्त…”

तिच्या या बोलण्यावरून बाकीच्या बायका अजून संताप करत होत्या. त्यांच्यातलं फेमिनिजम एकदम उफाळून आलेलं..

“ही माणसं समजतात काय स्वतःला. आपण इथे घर सांभाळतो, म्हणून ही माणसं निश्चिन्त होऊन कामावर जातात, घरातली कामं म्हणजे कामं नसतात का? आपण काय घरात झोपा काढतो फक्त?? बायकांना आपल्या गुलामीत ठेवायचं अन आपल्या इशाऱ्यावर नाचवायचं, एवढंच येतं या पुरुषांना.”

सर्वांनी बराच राग बाहेर काढला..अखेर त्यांचं एकमत झालं..

“नवरा कितीही चांगला असला तरी आपण स्वावलंबी व्हायला हवं, स्वतःचं पोट भरेल इतकं तरी कमवता आलं पाहिजे म्हणजे कुणापुढे हात पसरवावे लागणार नाही..”

खरं तर विशाखाला यातला काहीही त्रास नव्हता, पण या बायकांच्या सान्निध्यात राहून ती जरा बदलू लागली…एक दिवस सुशील ला म्हणाली,

“तू शहरात वाढलेला…माझ्यासारखी गावातली मुलगी का केलीस??”

तिच्या या अनपेक्षित प्रश्नाने तो गोंधळला, पण त्याने हसत उत्तर दिलं..

“अगं गावातली काय अन शहरातली काय, मला तू पाहताक्षणी आवडली होतीस…तू बाहेर काढलेली रांगोळी पाहूनच तुझ्या हातातल्या जादूची ओळख झाली, तुझ्या हातचे पोहे खाऊन तुझ्यातल्या सुगरणीची ओळख झाली..तू न पाहताच मी ठरवून टाकलं की आत जी कुणी समोर येईल तिच्याशीच लग्न करणार…अन समोर तू आलीस, जिच्या हातात सुंदर कला तीही इतकी सुंदर आहे हे बघून मी घायाळच झालो..”

विशाखा लाजली, पण दुसऱ्याच क्षणी तिच्या मनात संशय उफाळून आला..

“मला वाटतं गावातल्या मुलीला फारसं काही कळत नाही, त्यामुळे आपल्याला बाहेर वाट्टेल तसं वागता येईल असं वाटलं असेल तुम्हाला…त्यात मी काही कमवत नाही, म्हणून उद्या काही झालं तरी मी निमूटपणे तुझ्या सोबतच मूग गिळून राहील असं तर नाही वाटलं ना तुला?? आणि हो, आजकाल फार वेळ ऑफिस मध्ये असतोस, ओव्हरटाईम असतो का खरच??”

सुशीलला हे ऐकून धक्काच बसला, विनाकारण विशाखा त्याच्यावर संशय घेत होती. सुशील शांत राहिला, विशाखाला गैरसमज झालेला दिसतोय, काही वेळाने आपोआप शांत होईल या विचाराने तो शांत बसला.

विशाखा गावाकडे मेहंदी साठी प्रसिद्ध होती, कुणाचंही लग्न असलं की नवरी सकट सर्वजण तिच्याकडे येत. तिने स्वावलंबी व्हावं म्हणून शहरात हे सुरू केलं. तिच्या किटी पार्टीच्या मैत्रिणींनी तिला सपोर्ट केला. सुशीलला खूप आनंद झाला, पण विशाखा त्याच्याशी नीट बोलत नव्हती. शहरात मेहंदी साठी तिला पैसेही भरपूर मिळू लागले, इतके की घरातला किराणा आणि इतर खर्च सहज निघू लागला. विशाखा स्वावलंबी झाली..पण याचा स्वाभिमान न बाळगता तिला प्रचंड अभिमान वाटू लागला..आपल्याला नवऱ्याच्या जीवावर जगण्याची गरज नाही असं तिला वाटू लागलं. हळूहळू ती नवऱ्याचा अनादर करू लागली.

अश्यातच सुशीलची नोकरी अचानक गेली, कंपनी बंद पडल्याने सर्वजण बेरोजगार झाले होते. सुशील घरीच असायचा, एकटा बसून होता. विशाखाने त्याला धीर द्यायचा सोडून माझ्याच जिवावर कसं घर चालतंय याच्या बढाया मारू लागली…

विशाखाला एक सोन्याची चेन करायची हौस होती, तिने बऱ्यापैकी पैसे जमवले, पण 2 हजार कमी पडत होते..

“2 हजार कमी पडताय…आता तर मेहंदी च्या ऑर्डर्स पण नाहीये, आता बरीच वाट पाहावी लागणार..”

सुशीलने तिचं स्वतःशीच असलेलं बोलणं ऐकलं..तो घराबाहेर पडला…
विशाखाने विचारलं ही नाही..

सुशील असा रोज घराबाहेर पडत होता..

एक दिवस भाजीपाला आणायला विशाखा बाहेर गेली, तिथे शेजारीच एक धान्याचं दुकान होतं.. ट्रक मधून गोण्या उतरवण्यात येत होत्या…तिचं लक्ष गेलं अन तिला धक्काच बसला..सुशील तिथे धान्याची पोती उतरवण्याचं काम करत होता…विशाखा सुन्न होऊन घरी गेली..

काही वेळाने घामाघून झालेला सुशील परत आला, त्याने खिशातून दोन हजार रुपये आणले..आणि विशाखाला म्हणाला,

“हे घे, आता छानपैकी चेन बनवून घे..”

विशाखाला गलबलून आलं, तिला स्वतःचाच राग येऊ लागला..ती सुशीलच्या गळ्यात पडून रडू लागली…आणि म्हणाली,

“पुरुष म्हणजे कसं रसायन आहे ना, पुरुष कमवायला लागला की म्हणतो, आता मी माझ्या कुटुंबाची सर्व स्वप्न पूर्ण करेन..आणि माझ्यासारखी गर्विष्ठ स्त्री कमवायला लागली की म्हणते, मला आता कुणाची गरज नाही…”

“विशाखा, नको अगं विचार करुस…ती पार्टीतून यायची तेव्हाच मला समजायचं की तुझ्या डोक्यात काहीतरी भरवलं जातंय, पण सगळी माणसं सारखी नसतात अगं …आणि तुझा वाढलेला खर्च भागावा म्हणून ओव्हरटाईम करत होतो गं मी..”

“बस बस, आता मला आणखी नका लाजवू, मनापासून माफी मागते मी…आणि हो, उद्या पासून पोते उचलायचं काम बंद करायचं..”
