 हे सांगत सांगत ती नव्याने फर्निचर करून बनवलेल्या कपाटात तिचे कपडे कोंबत होती..

त्याचं लक्ष कपाटाकडे गेलं, त्याकडेच तो बघत राहिला..

“काय हो? कपाटाकडे काय बघताय एकटक?”

“काही नाही, जुने दिवस आठवले..”

“जुने दिवस?”

“हो, वहिनी आमच्या कुटुंबात आली..मी खुप लहान होतो..आम्हा दोन्ही भावात मोठं अंतर…हा बंगला नंतर बांधला, आधी दोन खोल्यांचं घर, त्यात आई, बाबा, दादा, मी आणि वहिनी असे पाच लोकं राहत होतो. वहिनी घरात आली..तिच्या बॅग मधून कपडे काढले आणि विचारलं कुठे ठेऊ? आमच्याकडे कपाट नव्हतं, दगडी कप्पे होते..तिथे आमचेच कपडे कसेबसे मावायचे. वहिनीला प्रश्न पडला..आम्ही निरुत्तर होतो, तोच वहिनी म्हणाली, ही काय इतकी जागा आहे ना! पलंगाखाली छानपैकी एक जुनं बेडशीट काढलं आणि कपडे घड्या करून ठेवले. तिचे कपडे ठेवतांना काढतांना खूपदा तिला अवघडलेलं पाहिलंय. पण तिने कधी तक्रार केली नाही. छोटंसं घर, त्यात पाहुण्यांचा राबता. दिवसभर ती किचनमध्ये. किचन आणि हॉल एकत्रच होता. बेड नावाला, दोन माणसं मावतील इतकी जागा.त्याला दरवाजाही नव्हता. बाथरूम मध्ये कुणी गेलं तर बेडरूमच्या पातळ पडद्यातून आरपार सगळं दिसे. बाथरूम एकच, वहिनीला खूप अवघड होई सगळं…पण नशीब समजून ती सगळं करत गेली.त्यात आईचा पाय मोडला, तिला भेटायला लोकं यायची, अख्खा दिवस त्यांना खाऊ पिऊ घालण्यात जाई. दादाला फारसा पगार नसे, वहिनीला कधी नवी साडी मागताना पाहिलं नाही..

गल्लीत कुणी विचारलं तर सांगायची, इतक्या साड्या आहेत मला, ठेवायला जागा नाही.कशाला पसारा आणायचा अजून? हे सांगताना तिच्या डोळ्यातलं पाणी लपवताना मी पाहिलं. दिवस बदलत गेले, घर बांधलं, गाडी घेतली…पण दादा  वहिनी आजही काटकसरीने राहताय, घराचा हफ्ता भरायला दादा ला मदत म्हणून वहिनी गपचूप बाहेरची कामं घेताय, वहिनीला तुझ्या रूपाने मोठा आधार मिळालाय, आज ती जरा मोकळा श्वास घेऊ पाहतेय…आज तुला सगळं आयतं मिळालंय, या नव्या कोऱ्या कपाटात तू ज्या प्रकारे कपडे कोंबत होतीस ना, वहिनीची आठवण झाली मला..”
