जाऊबाईंच्या नजरेत असणारी असुरक्षितता मेघनाच्या नजरेतून सुटली नव्हती. आज तिच्या नवऱ्याचा, जाऊबाईंच्या लाडक्या दिराचा-दीपकचा वाढदिवस. जाउबाई लग्न करून आलेल्या त्या आधीपासूनच सासूबाई अंथरुणाला खिळलेल्या. जाऊबाईंनी घराला एकहाती तोलून धरलं, सासूबाईंची कमी जाणवू दिली नाही. घरात त्यांचं एकेक काम लक्षवेधी होतं. वस्तूंची ठेवण, बागकाम, कमालीची स्वच्छता, रोज पौष्टिक अन रुचकर जेवण..या सगळ्यात जाऊबाईंनी कम्बर कसून मेहनत घेतलेली अन आजही घेत होत्या. घरी कुणीही आलं की आधी “वहिनी..” अशी हाक दिली जाई, वहिनी दिसल्याशिवाय मन थाऱ्यावर राहत नसायचं. आईची जागा वहिनीने भरून काढलेली.
दीपक साठी तर वहिनी म्हणजे सर्वात जवळची मायेची व्यक्ती. आईला काही सांगायचं म्हणजे तिची बोलणी बसायची, दादाला सांगितलं की लेक्चर ऐकावं लागायचं, पण वहिनी..जुन्या आणि नव्याचा ताळमेळ बसवत, प्रसंगी मित्र बनून असा सल्ला द्यायची की दीपक स्वतःहून चांगल्या मार्गाला लागे. तिच्या असण्याने सासूबाईही अगदी निर्धास्त झालेल्या.
दीपक साठी मेघनाचं स्थळ आलं. त्याला शिकलेली अन नोकरी करणारी मुलगी हवी होती. मेघना सर्व गोष्टींना साजेशी, सुंदर आणि मनमिळाऊ असल्याने सर्वांच्या संमतीने लग्न झालं. जाउबाई खुशीत होत्या, दीपकला मनासारखी जोडीदार मिळाली म्हणून एका मोठ्या जबाबदारीतून मोकळं झाल्याचा आनंद त्यांच्या चेहऱ्यावर झळकू लागला.
घरात एक नवीन सदस्याची भर पडली. मेघना सर्वांना आवडेल अशीच होती. घरात जाउबाईंसह सर्वजण तिचं कौतुक करत. त्यामुळे दीपकही खुश होई, बायकोबद्दल त्याचं प्रेम अजूनच घट्ट होत जाई.
नेहमीप्रमाणे दीपक ऑफिसहून घरी आला. आल्या आल्या तो “वहिनी..” अशी हाक देईल म्हणून हातातलं काम बाजूला टाकून जाउबाई हॉल मध्ये आल्या.
“मेघना..”
जाऊबाईंच्या काळजात धस्स झालं. कालपर्यंत घरात “वहिनी..”शब्द उच्चारल्याशिवाय घरात कुणी पाऊल ठेवत नसे. आज मात्र ही सवय मोडीत निघाली होती. त्या नावाची जागा कुणी दुसरीने घेतलेली.
जाऊबाईंच्या मनात असुरक्षितता तयार होत होती. त्यांना घरावर नाही तर प्रत्येकाच्या मनावर राज्य करायचं होतं. मेघनाच्या येण्याने आपण कुठेतरी विस्मृतीत जातोय की काय अशी भीती जाऊबाईंना वाटू लागली. कालपर्यंत जो दीपक वहिनी वहिनी म्हणून दिवसभर भंडावून सोडत असे आता तो बायकोत गुंतत जात होता.जाउबाई स्वतःची समजूत काढत, “आता त्याची बायको आली आहे, बायकोत समरस होणं नैसर्गिक आहे..तिच्याशी मन मोकळं करणं साहजिकच आहे…”
दीपकचा वाढदिवस होता.. वहिनी सकाळपासून कामाला लागलेल्या. संध्याकाळी दीपकच्या सर्व मित्रांना बोलावून त्यांना जेवू घालायचा बेत होता. मेघना जाऊबाईंना म्हणाली..
“वहिनी..आपण मस्त पावभाजी करूया का??”
“पावभाजी? दीपकला आवडत नाही..तुला माहिती नाही का??”
“अरे हो..मग मस्त थाळी बनवूया, हॉटेलमध्ये असते तशी..”
“थाळीत मसाल्याच्या भाज्या असतात, दीपकला ऍसिडिटी चा त्रास होतो तुला नाही माहीत..”
“मग..काय करावं? पुलाव अन पुरी भाजी??”
“पुलाव चालेल, पण पुऱ्या म्हणजे तेलकट..दीपकचा लगेच घसा उठतो, तुला नाही माहीत..”
जाऊबाईंचं हे “तुला नाही माहीत” मागे “दीपकची काळजी मला जास्त आहे..” असा नकळतपणे एक सूर होता..मेघनाला ते चांगलंच कळून येत होतं.
संध्याकाळी दीपक घरी आला. वहिनी अन मेघना एकसाथ म्हणाल्या..
“बाहेरून फुलं आणायची आहेत..”
दोघींना एकसाथ बोलताना पाहून दीपक हसला..
“बरं मेघना चल आपण घेऊन येऊ..”
जाऊबाईंच्या ते मनाला लागलं, “वहिनी चल माझ्यासोबत..” असं ऐकायची जाउबाईंना सवय असल्याने हे जरा जड जात होतं.
संध्याकाळी सर्वजण जमले, वहिनी पुढे पुढे येऊन सर्वांना वाढत होत्या, मेघना काही वाढायला गेली की तिच्या हातातून घेत स्वतः वाढायला जात.
सर्वात शेवटी केप कपायचं ठरलं होतं, कारण केक खाल्ला की जेवण जाणार नाही असं सर्वांचं ठरलेलं..
जेवणं झाली, मेघनाने केक समोर आणून ठेवला. जाउबाई बाजूला उभ्या होत्या. मेघना दीपक शेजारी उभी..दिपकचे सर्व मित्र नवीनच लग्न झाल्याने दीपकला चिडवत होते..दीपक केक कापायला लागताच मित्र ओरडला..
“अरे एकटा काय कापतोय, मेघनाला घे सोबत..हाताला हात लाव..”
सर्व मित्र हसायला लागले, मित्र म्हणताय म्हणून मेघनाने केक कापताना दिपकच्या हाताला हात लावला. जाउबाई हे सगळं बघत असताना मागे मागे सरकत होत्या.
दिपकने केक कापला, सर्व मित्रांनी टाळ्या वाजवल्या, दिपकने एक तुकडा उचलला..मित्र म्हणायला लागले..
“आधी बायकोला..”
दिपकने केकचा तुकडा मेघनाच्या तोंडाजवळ नेताच मेघनाने हात थांबवला. सर्वजण चकित झाले..मेघना म्हणाली..
“तुझं माझं अन या घराचं आयुष्य ज्यांनी गोड केलंय.. आयुष्याच्या महत्वाच्या काळात कधी मित्र, कधी आई तर कधी शिक्षक बनून ज्यांनी तुला सावरलंय.. घरी आल्यावर पहिली हाक तू ज्यांना देतोस..त्या वहिनींचा हा मान..”
सर्वजण कौतुकाने बघू लागले.. दीपकलाही वहिनींना डावलत असल्याची जाणीव झाली. तो वहिनी जवळ गेला अन डोळ्यात पाणी साठलेल्या वाहिनीला पहिला घास भरवला.. सर्वांनी पुन्हा एकदा टाळ्यांचा कडकडाट केला..जाउबाईंना आपली जागा परत मिळाल्याचं समाधान मिळालं अन मेघना बद्दल असलेली अढी कायमची सुटून गेली..
