“तुझी वहिनी बघ..तुलाही कधी जमली नाही अशी भाजी बनवली तिने..आणि घर इतकं टापटीप आणि छान ठेवलंय ना…नाहीतर एक तू होती, घरभर नुसता पसारा आणि तू बनवलेली भाजी म्हणजे अंगावर काटाच यायचा…”

वहिनी खुदकन हसली, आणि मी बळेच रागावून,

“जेव्हा पहावं तेव्हा वहिनीचं कौतुक, आम्ही काही कामाचेच नाही…ना?”

वहिनीचं कौतुक ऐकून मी सुखावले होते, आई वडिलांना आवडेल अशी आणि घराला घरपण आणेल अशी वहिनी मिळाली होती.

मी माहेरी आली आणि वहिनीला पण माहेरी पाठवलं..

घरात एकदा भावाला सहज म्हटलं..

“नशीबवान आहेस हा…अशी बायको मिळाली…”

भावाने आजूबाजूला बघितलं आणि जोरजोराने हसायला लागला…

“काय रे काय झालं?”

“तुला माहितीये ना बाबांचा स्वभाव…अगं ही मीरा म्हणजे…जेवण बनवेल तर अगदी खारट नाहीतर अळणी, घरभर पसारा करेल…फक्त tv पाहण्यात आणि आईने बनवलेले पदार्थ फस्त करण्यात तिचा वेळ जातो…आणि हो, मी तुला हे सांगितलं हे आई बाबांना सांगू नकोस हा plz…”

“मग बाबा का असे म्हटले असतील??”

आठवडाभरात वहिनी परत आली,

वहिनीने भाजी बनवली, खारट झाली…

“बघ…तुला जमते का अशी…”

“बाबा खारट वाटतेय हो जरा…”

“अगं मीठ तुझ्या आईने टाकलं…नाहीतर कशाला खारट झाली असती..”

“आईनेही हो म्हटलं…”

दुसऱ्या दिवशी घरभर पसारा, वहिनी कसलीतरी पुस्तकं वाचत होती आणि एकेक पुस्तक पसरून ठेवलेलं..

“वहिनी काय हे??”

“अगं मीच म्हटलेलं तिला आवरू नकोस म्हणून, कधींचं एक पुस्तक शोधत होतो, म्हटलं बघू यात सापडतय का…”

एव्हाना मला समजलं होतं…आम्ही जराशी चूक केली की बाबा घर डोक्यावर घेत, मात्र वहिनीच्या प्रत्येक चूका पोटात घालत..

असं सुरूच होतं.. पण हळूहळू वहिनीत बदल घडून आला..वहिनी घर टापटीप ठेवायला लागली…छान स्वयंपाक बनवायला लागली…आणि येणाऱ्या पाहुण्यांशीही आदराने बोलू लागली…

मला बाबांचा प्रयोग लक्षात आला..

मी सासरी परत जायच्या वेळी बाबांना हळूच टोकलं…

“चालुद्या सुनेचं कौतुक…”

बाबांना माझा टोमणा समजला, बाबा म्हणाले,

“हे बघ, दुसऱ्याची मुलगी आपल्या घरात आणताना ती घाबरलेली असते, अश्या वेळी तिला सांभाळून घेतलं, तिचं कौतुक केलं तर तिला हे घर स्वतःचं वाटेल ना..मुळात आपण आपल्या अपेक्षा तिच्यावर लादणे चुकीचेच…पण नात्यांमध्ये जी थोडीफार अपेक्षा असते ती पूर्ण करून घ्यायचीही एक पद्धत असते…नाहीतर असतात काही लोकं….तुझ्या घरच्यांनी काही शिकवलं नाही का, तुला एवढंही येत नाही का..असं म्हणत तिचा उद्धार करणार आणि नंतर ती चांगली वागत नाही याचं खापर तिच्यावरच फोडणार…हे म्हणजे चोराच्या उलट्या बोंबाच नाही का..?”

बाबांच्या या वागण्याचं मला खरंच कौतुक वाटलं…

मी निघून गेले,

वहिनीने सर्वांना जेवायला वाढलं…

आज भाजीत मीठ अगदी प्रमाणात पाहून बाबा म्हणाले,

“आधीसारखी नाही करत तू…”

“म्हणजे कशी? अळणी का??”

घरात एकच हशा पिकला…घराने वहिनीला आणि वहिनीने घराला कायमचं आपलंसं केलं…
