 लाडकी स्मिता माहेरी येणार म्हणून नम्रताने काहीही कसूर सोडली नव्हती. लग्नानंतर ती अमेरिकेला गेली ती तब्बल एक वर्षाने येणार होती. सकूची लाडकी लेक अन नम्रताची एकुलती एक नणंद आज येणार होती. माहेरपण काय असतं हे नम्रताला चांगलंच ठाऊक होतं, माहेरपण ती जसं अनुभवायची तसंच ते दुसऱ्याला देण्याइतपतही तिचं मन मोठं होतं.

लाडक्या नणंद साठी तिने भरपूर बाजार करून आणला, तिला जे जे जे आवडतं ते ते सगळं आणलं. छान छान कपडे घेऊन ठेवले, स्वयंपाक घरात कामात येतील अशा वस्तूही आणून ठेवल्या. सगळी तयारी झालेली.

स्मिता आली नम्रता ताट घेऊन बाहेरच आली..सासूबाई आतून हाका देत होत्या..

“नम्रता.. अगं ए नम्रता..स्मिता आलीय..ओवाळ तिला..”

नम्रताचं बाहेर ओवाळूनही झालं तेव्हा सासूबाई आल्या,

“ओवाळलस होय..स्मिता, माझी लेक ती..” असं म्हणत सासूबाई तिच्या गळ्यात पडल्या. नम्रताला आपल्या आईची आठवण आली अन तिने डोळ्याच्या कडा गपचूप पुसून घेतल्या.

स्मिता आत आली, अंघोळ करून फ्रेश झाली. तिच्याभोवती सर्वांचा गराडा जमला, बऱ्याच गप्पा झाल्यानंतर सर्वजण जेवायला बसले..नम्रताने प्रेमाने स्मिताला वाढलं.

“ताई, पोटभर जेवा.. तिकडे काही असं मिळत नसेल..”

“हो ना गं वहिनी, घरच्या जेवणाला आसुसले होते बघ मी..”

“नम्रता शिरा वाढ की..तिला दिलाच नाहीस तू..”

“आई ताटात नीट बघ, वहिनीने सर्वात आधी मला वाढलंय..”

“अच्छा दिलंय होय..”

जेवण झाल्यावर सर्वजण गप्पा मारत बसले, नम्रताने झाकपाक केली आणि स्मितासाठी तिच्या आवडीचं आईस क्रिम सर्वांना वाटीत घेऊन आली. सासूबाई आत गेलेल्या, मुलाला सांगत होत्या..

“अहो आई तिला केव्हाच देऊन झालंय, स्मिताला आवडतं म्हणून मी कालच घेऊन आलेले..”

सासूबाई काहीही बोलल्या नाही. 

दुसऱ्या दिवशी सकाळी सकाळी तळणाचा वास येत होता, नम्रता जाऊन बघते तर सासूबाई अनारसे बनवत होत्या. एरवी पाण्याचा ग्लासही उचलून न ठेवणाऱ्या आज चक्क उभं राहून खटपट करत होत्या. 

“आई काय करताय??”

“तुला सांगितलं होतं मी, स्मिताला अनारसे आवडतात म्हणून, तू तर काही करून ठेवले नाहीत..”

“कोण म्हणालं?? मागच्या आठवड्यातच बनवून डब्यात भरून ठेवले होते मी..”

सासूबाईं कसलाही अपराधीपणा न बाळगता नम्रताला..

“आता हे भिजवलं आहे तर घे तळून..”

सासूबाई बाजूला झाल्या, पण नम्रताला खूप काम पुरलं. सासूबाईंच्या अश्या वागण्याने स्मितासाठी कितीही करू वाटलं तरी मन धजेना..आता फक्त सासूबाईं सांगतील तेव्हढंच ती करत असे.

स्मिताला हा बदल लक्षात आला, तिने आईला सुनावलं..

“आई काय चाललंय तुझं? तू सांगितल्याशिवाय वहिनी माझ्यासाठी काहीच करणार नाही का? अगं तू नाही म्हटलीस तरी ती कुणालाही न जुमानता माझे हट्ट पुरवेल. आजवर बघत नाहीयेस का तू? तू जे सांगितलं त्याहून जास्त पटीने तिने केलंय माझ्यासाठी. आणि प्रेमाने, आपुलकीने ती करतेय, केवळ कर्तव्य म्हणून नाही, पण तू…तिला शिरा नाही वाढला, आईस क्रिम तिला दे आधी, अनारसे केले नाहीस अश्या क्षुल्लक गोष्टींनी तगादा लावलास, जे की तिने आधीच केलं होतं..तू तोंडावर पडलीस तरी लक्षात कसं येत नाही तुझ्या?”

“मी याबाबतीत विचारच केला नाही..”

“मग आता कर, वहिनी स्वतःहुन सगळं करत असताना तू सतत तिला त्याच त्याच सूचना देते जे तिचं केव्हाच करून झालेलं असतं.. हे बघ, कर्तव्य माणसाने स्वतःहून केलं की त्याची गोडी वाढते, ते जर असं लादण्याचं काम केलं तर अर्थ राहत नाही..ती कर्तव्य करत असताना तू ते लादल्याप्रमाणे तिला सतत बोलून ऐकवते आणि मग प्रेमाने काही करण्याची तिची इच्छाही निघून जाते..”

“खरं तर मला इतकी सवय झालेली की मी सूचना दिल्याशिवाय नम्रता काही करणार नाही असाच समज होता माझा, मी काय करायची, काय बोलायची याचं भान मलाच नव्हतं. पण यापुढे नक्की लक्षात ठेवीन..”
