“हॅलो मी रजत पवार..”

रजत शेकहॅन्ड साठी हात पुढे करतो, वैदेही ईच्छा नसतानाही शेकहॅन्ड देते. रजत बराच वेळ तिचा हात सोडत नाही, ती कसाबसा आपला हात सोडवून घेते. पुढे तोच म्हणतो,

“माझ्याशी लग्न झाल्यावर जॉब वगैरे दे सोडून, माझ्याच कंपनीत मोठ्या पदावर बसवेन तुला”

“माफ करा पण असं आयतं यश मला पटणार नाही, माझ्या तत्वात नाही ते”

“आयतं कशाला? माझी बायको असणार आहेस ना तू?”

“हो, पण ते माझं कर्तृत्व कसं ठरलं? माझ्या मेहनतीने जी मी मिळवेन त्याला किंमत असेल”

रजतला खरं तर तिचा राग आला, पण आपला बडेजाव करण्याची एकही संधी त्याने सोडली नाही. दोघांचं एवढंच बोलणं झालं आणि दोघेही आत आले. रजतची आई आणि वैदेहीची आई, आत्या बोलत बसले होते. जुजबी बोलणं झालं आणि त्यांनी निरोप घेतला. वैदेहीचा चेहरा उतरला होता. हा एक सामान्य मुलगा असता तरी तिला इतकं काही वाटलं नसतं, पण हा मुळातच अहंकारी आणि वर्चस्व गाजवू पाहणारा वाटला. 

घरी आल्यावर आत्या आणि आई मात्र जाम खुश दिसत होत्या.

“काय घर होतं, असं घर फक्त सिनेमात बघितलं होतं हो..” – आई

“होना..आणि बाहेर किती महागड्या कार, बापरे ! नशीब काढलं वैदेही ने” – आत्या

“अजून होकार तर येउदेत”

त्यांच्या झगमगाटापुढे आई आणि आत्याचे डोळे दिपले होते, श्रीमंतीपुढे त्यांना काही दिसत नव्हतं. आईच्या डोळ्यात विशेष आनंद होता. ज्या गरिबीत आणि हलाखीत त्यांनी आधीचं आयुष्य काढलं होतं तेच पुन्हा वैदेहीच्या वाट्याला येणार नाही याची तिला खात्री वाटत होती. एकीकडे वैदेहीला रजत आवडला नव्हता आणि दुसरीकडे आईचा आनंद बघून काही बोलायची हिम्मतही होत नव्हती.

देवांग ऑफिसला परतला. देवांग जाताच ऑफिसमध्ये पुन्हा एक चैतन्य उभं राहिलं. कारण देवांग म्हणजे कल्पनाशक्तीचा एक सळसळता आविष्कार. त्याच्या डिझाइन्स बघून डोळ्यांना सुखद शीतलता मिळत असे. देवांगचा चुलतभाऊ, जो तिथेच कामाला होता त्या आदेशलाही आधार वाटला. पण त्याच ऑफिसमधला त्याचा द्वेष करणाऱ्या राजेशला मात्र देवांग परतल्याने अस्थिरता वाटू लागली. एवढे दिवस देवांगच्या कल्पना सईकडून काढून घेऊन ऑफिसमध्ये तो कमी बसवत होता, बॉस बऱ्यापैकी आता राजेशवर खुश होत होता..पण आता सगळं बंद होणार होतं. देवांग येताच ऑफिसमध्ये नवीन कामं सुरू झाली, नवीन प्रोजेक्ट आले. 

सर्वजण काम करत असतानाच बॉस बाहेर आले आणि सर्वांना त्यांनी उठायला लावलं..

“सर्वांनी इकडे लक्ष द्या, एक महत्वाची घोषणा आज करायची आहे”

सर्वजण काम सोडून बघू लागले, काय घोषणा आहे सर्वांना उत्सुकता लागली.

“आजच आपल्याला एका मोठ्या कंपनीच्या डिझाइन्स चा प्रोजेक्ट मिळाला आहे..हा देवांगचा पायगुण असावा..” सर्वजण हसू लागले आणि टाळ्या वाजवू लागले..

“थांबा..खरी खूषखबरी तर अजून पुढे आहे..देवांगचं आता प्रमोशन होऊन तो डिझाइन हेड म्हणून काम बघणार आहे..”

हे ऐकताच सर्वजण आनंदाने ओरडू लागले, देवांग सर्वांचाच लाडका होता, त्याचं यश बघून राजेश सोडून आनंदित होणारी सर्वच माणसं होती. देवांग साठी हा आनंदाचा धक्का होता. सर्वांनी त्याचं अभिनंदन  केलं. देवांगने घरी कळवलं, घरीही सर्वजण आनंदी झाले. आजीने देवांगशी बोलण्याचा हट्ट धरला तसा देवांगच्या वडिलांनी फोन आजीजवळ दिला..

“हॅलो, देवा…छान काम झालं रे, तुला खूप खूप आशीर्वाद..”

“थँक्स यु आजी..”

“ते जाऊदे, हे सगळं त्या वैदेहीमुळे बरं का, ती नुसती तुला भेटली तरी तुझी चांगली खबर आली.. अरे सहचारिणी म्हणजे एक सकारात्मक शक्ती असते, लक्ष्मी असते…तिचा आसपास असलेला वावरसुद्धा माणसाला अप्रत्यक्षपणे वर आशीर्वाद देतो.. तुम्ही कितीही नाकारलंत तरी तुम्ही एकमेकांसाठी बनलेला आहात..दैवलेख आहे हा..”

“दैवलेख..” हा शब्द कितीतरी वेळ त्याच्या कानात घुमत होता.

“वैदेही, अगं ए वैदेही…मुलाकडच्यांचा फोन आलेला..लग्नाला होकार दिलाय त्यांनी..”

आई आनंदाने वेडी होऊन वैदेहीकडे आलेली, डोळ्यात पाणी होतं.. चेहऱ्यावर हसू होतं.. काय करावं तिला सुचेना,ती देवासमोर बसत होती..सारखं देवाच्या पाया पडत होती.. आत बाहेर करत होती, काय करावं तिलाच सुचत नव्हतं..

वडील गेल्यानंतर आईला पाहिल्यांदा इतकं खुश तिने पाहिलेलं.. डोळ्यांची पापणी न लावता ती आईकडे बघत होती. तिच्याही डोळ्यात पाणी येत होतं..हे सगळं बघून आता आपल्या मनातलं मनातच ठेवायचं..समोर हे आलं त्याला सामोरे जायचं..आहे ते स्वीकारायचं…दगडालाही पाझर फुटतो, तो तर माणूस आहे..तो अहंकारी आहे म्हणून त्याला नाकारण्यापेक्षा आईच्या आनंदासाठी त्याला स्वीकारून त्याला बदलेन..करेन मी हे लग्न..!!!

पुन्हा एकदा तडजोड, पुन्हा समोर आलेलं स्वीकारायची तयारी..

दिवस बदलतील असा आईचा समज होता, पण दिवस बदलणार नव्हते, दुःखं तसंच राहणार होतं.. फक्त त्याचं स्वरूप बदलणार होतं.. वैदेहीचा स्वाभिमान, तिची तत्व, तिचं अस्तित्व…या सगळ्याची त्या श्रीमंतीपुढे आहुती द्यावी लागणार होती.

आजी जे बोलली त्याचा विचार करत देवांग त्याचा डेस्क समोर बसला होता. इतक्यात मागून सई आली, मागून तिने त्याला मिठी मारली. ऑफिसमधले बाकीचे बघत होते ते पाहून देवांग ओशाळला आणि पटकन त्याने तिला बाजूला केलं. ती म्हणाली,

“देवांग, so proud of you… तुला प्रमोशन मिळालं..आता डबल काम, डबल पगार..”

“थँक्स सई”

“आपण आता लवकरात लवकर लग्न करूया..”

इतके दिवस लग्नाची घाई नसलेली सई आज प्रमोशन मिळाल्यावर लग्नासाठी मागे लागली, त्यात तिचा स्वार्थ होता पण देवांगच्या निरागस मनाला तो समजणार कसा..!!!

तेवढ्यात मागून देवांगचा चुलतभाऊ, आदेश आला..

सई रागाने त्याच्याकडे बघू लागली, त्याला काही बोलणार तोच भानावर आली की हा देवांगचा भाऊ आहे. ती काहीही न बोलता तिकडून निघून गेली..

“आदेश काय हे, का तिला असं बोलतोस..”

“देवांग, वाईट वाटतं मला तुझं…आज स्पष्टच बोलतो..सई चांगली मुलगी नाहीये, स्वतःच्या स्वार्थासाठी ती तुझ्यासोबत आहे फक्त..”

“असं म्हणू नकोस आदेश, अरे तिने पहिल्यापासून माझ्यावर प्रेम केलं..कशीही असली तरी तिचं माझ्यावर प्रेम आहे..”

“तुला कळतंय का की तुझ्या या वाक्यातच तुझं उत्तर आहे ते?”

“म्हणजे?”

“तिचं तुझ्यावर प्रेम आहेस असं म्हणालास तू, तुझं तिच्यावर प्रेम आहे असं नाही..हे बघ देवांग, तू भाबडा आहेस, कुणाला फसवायचं नाही, आपल्या जवळच्या लोकांना कधी दुखवायचं नाही हा तुझा स्वभाव, या स्वभावाला धरून फक्त तू तिच्यासोबत आहेस. जरा याच्याबाहेर जाऊन विचार केला असतास तर नाकारलं असतंस सईला…बघ, कर विचार..”

रूमवर परतल्यावर देवांगची परत चलबिचल सुरू झाली, आदेश म्हटलं ते खरं असेल का? आजी म्हणाली त्यात तथ्य आहे का? आणि वैदेही, तिला नकार दिला पण कुठे असेल ती? काय झालं असेल तिचं?”

अश्या परिस्थितीत त्याचं एकच हत्यार..त्याची पेंटिंग. त्याने कॅनव्हास उभा केला..रंग, ब्रश वर काढलं आणि सुरू झाला..

तब्बल दोन तासानंतर त्याने चित्राकडे पाहिलं..तो मागे सरकला..त्यात असं होतं की..

एका पायवाटेवर एक मुलगा उभा होता, पाठमोरा..त्या वाटेवरून दोन रस्ते जात होते आणि तो मधोमध उभा…एका हातात चाफ्याची फुलं आणि दुसरा हात रिकामा. हातातून चाफ्याची फुलं गळून पडत होती..एकेक करून सगळी खाली पडत होती..

हा चाफा म्हणजे वैदेही का?
