 घरी आई अंघोळ करून बाहेर आली,

आजोबांनी मनूला आईकडे ठेवलं आणि ते गेले,

सर्व विधी आटोपून आजोबा आणि वडील घरी परतले,

सगळे बसले असता मनूने परत आईला विचारलं,

“आई, त्या काकांचे सर्वजण पाया का पडत होते? ते दुसरे काका, त्या आजी, मोठ्या आहेत ना त्यांच्यापेक्षा?”

आजोबा आणि तिचे वडील आईकडे बघत होते,

आई मनूला आता कसं समजावेल याचीच चिंता त्यांना होती,

आईने सांगितलं,

“बाळा ते काका देवाघरी गेले, म्हणजे आता ते देव झाले..म्हणून सर्वजण त्यांच्या पाया पडत होते..”

“मेल्यावर माणूस देव होतो का?”

“मेल्यावर नाही, पण मरणाची चाहूल लागताच त्याला देवपण येतं..”

आजोबा आणि वडिलांना प्रश्न पडला, ही असं काय बोलतेय?

मनूला काहीही काय सांगतेय?

खरं आहे, गेल्या आठ दहा दिवसांत मी जे पाहिलं त्यावरून पटलं मला..

म्हणजे?

राजाभाऊ, भलेही व्यसनी असतील, कुटुंबाबद्दल दुर्लक्ष करत असतील, पण जेव्हा त्यांना त्रास होऊ लागला आणि हॉस्पिटलमध्ये भरती केलं तेव्हा मी वाहिनीसोबत जायचे,

तेव्हा त्यांचं जे रूप होतं ते खूपच वेगळं होतं..

वेगळं म्हणजे?

ज्या माणसाला आपला मुलगा कोणत्या इयत्तेत आहे ते माहीत नव्हतं तो वहिनींना सांगत होता,

काहीही कर, पण मुलांची शिक्षणं चांगली कर..त्यांना कधीही एकटं सोडू नकोस,

त्यांची मित्रमंडळी कोण आहे यावर सतत नजर ठेव,

तरणीताठी झाल्यावर अजूनच लक्ष दे, दारू बिरुच्या जवळपास पण फिरकू देऊ नकोस,

बऱ्याच महिन्यांचा माझा पगार मालकाकडे बाकिये, त्याला भेट. तुझ्याकडे देईल तो..

पोराला सांग, लग्न झालं की बायकोला चांगलं वागव, लक्ष्मी असते ती… माझ्यासारखं करू नकोस..

आणि तू सणासुदीला आवर्जून चांगली साडी घे,

तब्येतीकडे लक्ष दे, आता माझा त्रास नाही राहणार तुला…

हे सगळं ते राजुभाऊ वाहिनींपाशी बोलत असायचे,

वहिनी जास्त चिंतीत व्हायच्या,

आज हा माणूस जे बोलतोय तसं आयुष्यभर वागला असता तर?

वडील आणि आजोबा उद्विग्नतेने ऐकत होते..

“म्हणजे देवाघरी जायचं असलं की देवबाप्पा चांगली बुद्धी देतो का?” बालमनाने स्वतःला जेवढं समजलं तेवढं आकलन केलं..

आईने डोक्यावरून हात फिरवत हो ला हो दिलं, तेव्हा तिचं समाधान झालं..
