दुसऱ्या जातीची…

 बाबूंरावांची दोन्ही मुलं शिकायला बाहेर होती, एक इंजिनियर तर दुसरा डॉक्टर. बाबुरावांनी पै पै जोडून मुलांची शिक्षणं पूर्ण केली अन दोघांना लायक बनवलं. मुलं कमावती झाली, घरात लक्ष्मी पाणी भरू लागली, सुखाचे दिवस आले. आता मुलांच्या लग्नाची काळजी होती. बाबुरावांनी आपली बायको शितलकडे विषय काढला..

“मुलांसाठी स्थळं बघायला सुरवात करायला हवी..”

“आधी मुलांना विचारावं लागेल.. त्यांना कुणी पसंत असेल तर?”

“छे.. माझे मुलं माझ्या शब्दाबाहेर नाहीत..”

“अहो आपल्या आवडीची व्यक्ती मिळणं आणि त्याच्याशी लग्न करणं गुन्हा आहे का? आपल्याकडे अजूनही लव्ह मॅरेजला गुन्हा समजला जातो, सगळेच प्रेमविवाह कोलमडले आहेत असं नाही आणि ठरवून केलेलं लग्न टिकलेच आहेत असं नाही..”

बाबुराव खूप विचार करतात, मुलांच्या मनाविरुद्ध लग्न लावणं त्यांना पटत नव्हतंच. त्यांनी मुलांशी फोनवर चर्चा केली, आणि शितलने सांगितलेलं खरं ठरलं, दोघांनीही आपापली जोडीदार आधीच निवडली होती. 

दोघींना घरी बोलवण्यात आलं, त्यांची पारख केली गेली. दोघीही उच्चशिक्षित आणि सुसंस्कृत होत्या. बाबुराव आणि शीतलला मुली आवडल्या आणि दोघांचंही लग्न उरकलं गेलं. नातेवाईकांमध्ये खुसपुस चाललीच होती, पण बाबुरावांनी मुलांसाठी दुर्लक्ष केलं. 

नंतर काही महिन्यात बाबुरावांच्या भावाच्या मुलाचं लग्न ठरलं, सर्व कुटुंबीय लग्नाला गावी गेले. तिकडे “आमच्या मुलाने आमच्या पसंतीच्या मुलीशी लग्न केलं, आमच्या शब्दाबाहेर गेला नाही” असाच काहीसा सूर बाबुरावांच्या समोर सर्वजण लावत होते. त्यात दोघीही दुसऱ्या जातीच्या. लग्नात मुलींविषयी फारशी माहिती द्यायला बाबुराव आणि शितलने नकार दिलेला, कारण आंतरजातीय विवाह म्हटल्यावर कुणीतरी लग्नात गोंधळ घालायला नको. 

शिखा आणि सुरभी, दोघीही लग्नाघरात हरेक प्रकारे मदत करत होत्या, तिथे एक काकूबाई होत्या, बाबुराव आणि शितलचा संसार त्यांना आधीपासूनच डोळ्यात खुपत होता, कारण दोघांनीही शहरात जाऊन खूप प्रगती केली होती. त्या काकूंबाईंना आता विषयच मिळाला होता, त्यांचं लक्ष सतत शिखा आणि सुरभीकडे होतं. काही कमी जास्त झालं की काकूबाई त्यांना नको ते बोलत. दोघींनीही मौन बाळगण्याचं ठरवलं होतं. काकूंबाईंना शंका होती की या दोघीही दुसऱ्या जातीच्या असाव्यात, तीच गोष्ट त्या खोदून खोदून विचारायचा प्रयत्न करत होत्या. पण शिखा आणि सुरभीची हुशार होत्या, उगाच जात सांगून नको तो प्रसंग त्यांना ओढवून घ्यायचा नव्हता. 

“सुनबाई, तुझ्या घरी हळदीला किती वरमाया होत्या गं?”

शिखाकडे अशी पद्धत नव्हती त्यामुळे ती निरुत्तर झाली, 

“सुरभीबाई, लग्नानंतर पहिल्या मुळाला काय शिदोरी दिलेली तुला?”

सुरभीसाठीही हा प्रकार नवीन, ती गप्प..

बाबुराव आत आले, काकूबाईंना भेटायला. 

“काकुबाई, कशी आहे तब्येत?”

“बाब्या…मला एक सांग, या तुझ्या दोन्ही सुना कोणत्या जातीच्या आहेत रे?”

बाबुराव एकदम निरुत्तर झाले, एक तर जात सांगितली तर भर लग्नघरात चर्चा, टोमणे सुरू झाले असते. 

“काकू अहो आता जेवायची वेळ आहे, तुम्ही जेवलात का?”

बाबुराव विषय बदलण्याचा प्रयत्न करत होते

“बाब्या, विषय बदलू नको…आपल्या वाड्याला डाग लागेल असं काही केलं नाही ना तुझ्या पोरांनी?”

बाबुराव आता जवळजवळ रडकुंडीला आलेले, शहरात जाऊन आधुनिकता अंगिकारली असली तरी गावातला मान हरवून बसण्याची चिंता त्यांना सतावू लागली.

शिखा आणि सुरभीच्या नजरेतून बाबांची चलबिचल सुटली नाही. बाबांच्या चेहऱ्यावरील चिंता त्यांना सतावू लागली.. दोघीही पुढे झाल्या, आणि काकूंबाईंना म्हणाल्या..

“आमची जात विचारताय ना? आम्हीच सांगतो..”

आधी शिखा म्हणाली,

“आम्हाला आमची जात माहीत नाही, पण आमच्या सासरची जात माहिती आहे..सासरचे संस्कार माहिती आहेत. “

मग सुरभी म्हणाली,

“आम्ही त्या जातीचे आहोत, जिथे आपल्या माणसांना जोडून ठेवायचे संस्कार आमच्या सासूबाईंनी आम्हाला दिलेत..”

“आम्ही त्या जातीचे आहोत जिथे मेहनत आणि चिकाटी काय असते याची शिकवण आमच्या सासरेबुवांनी आम्हाला दिली..”

“आम्ही त्या जातीचे आहोत जिथे आई वडील देवासमान असून आयुष्यात पहिली जागा त्यांची, असं सांगणारे आमचे नवरे आम्हाला मिळालेत..”

“आम्ही त्या जातीचे आहोत जिथे दुसऱ्याच्या आनंदात सहभागी होतांना वातावरणात विष कालवण्याचे संस्कार आमच्यात नाहीत..”

घरातील सर्व मंडळी हे ऐकत होती, त्यांचं हे उत्तर ऐकून सर्वांना कौतुक तर वाटलंच, वर काकूंबाईंचा सर्वांना राग आला.. काकूंबाई मुद्दामहून असं का विचारत होत्या आणि दोन्ही सुनांना कश्या टारगेट करत होत्या हे सर्वांना समजलं. काकूबाई एकदम घाबरल्या, दोघींच्या उत्तराने त्यांची पुरती भंबेरी उडाली होती. 

“बाब्या तू म्हणत होतास ना जेवण कर म्हणून? चल पटकन, खूप भूक लागलीये मला..”

बाबुरावांना एक गोष्ट समजली, आपल्या मुलांनी आपली पसंत जरी निवडली असली तरी चांगुलपणाच्या कसोटीवर पडताळूनच मुलींना घरात आणलं आहे.
