“अरे ए कमलेश, इकडे ये जरा..”

“काय गं आई, बोल तिथूनच..”

“समोर येऊन बोलायलाही जड जातं का??”

“आई मी ट्रेकिंगला जातोय मित्रांसोबत..बॅग भरतोय आधीच उशीर झालाय..”

“हो हो..जा..परवा म्हटलं चल आमच्यासोबत खंडोबाच्या टेकडीवर तर नको म्हणालास..आता मित्रांनी विचारलं तर एका पायावर तयार..”

हे बोलेपर्यंत कमलेश निघूनही गेला. कमलेश गेला अन शेजारच्या सुशिलाबाई हळदी कुंकवाचं निमंत्रण द्यायला आल्या. 

“येईल नक्की, आता बसा की ओ.. काय घाई आहे..गप्पा मारू जरा..”

“आता सासूबाई झाल्या तुम्ही, छान निवांत झाल्या..मला नाही ना पण तसं..कामं मलाच उरकावी लागतात..”

“उरका सावकाश..बसा जरा, जानकी..चहा टाक गं दोन कप..”

“हो आई..”

“मघाशी कसला आवाज येत होता??”

“मघाशी?? अच्छा हा..आमचा धाकटा कमलेश, घाई झालेली त्याला फार..मित्रांसोबत ट्रेकिंगला जातोय म्हणे. ही आजकालची पोरं पण ना, मित्रांचं लगेच ऐकतील..”

“समवयस्क लोकांशी आपलं जास्त पटतं, मानवी स्वभाव आहे हा..”

“बरोबर आहे म्हणा, काहीका असेना, मित्रांसोबत छान रमतो कमलेश, छान छान उपक्रम करतात सगळे, एकत्र मिळून बऱ्याचदा बाहेरही जातात…घरची आठवणही राहत नाही बघा मग त्याला..” त्या कौतुकाने सांगत होत्या..

“आणि मोठा मुलगा कसा आहे? कामावर गेलाय का??”

“हो..अभिलाष गेलाय कामावर..त्याला पण भरपूर मित्र आहेत..पण सध्या कमी झालंय बाहेर जाणं..”

“कामाचा ताण असेल..”

सासूबाई हळूच सुशीलबाईंच्या जवळ जाऊन कानात हळू आवाजात बोलू लागल्या,

“आता बायको आली, तिचंच ऐकणार ना..ना आमचं ऐकेल ना मित्रांचं… काल त्याचे मित्र संध्याकाळी पार्टीला बोलवत होते त्याला..फार ईच्छा होती त्याची..पण जानकीने फक्त एक कटाक्ष काय टाकला, अभिलाषने घाबरून तडक नाही सांगितलं त्यांना..असं कधी असतं का? बायकोचा एवढा धाक?? आपल्यावेळी नव्हतं बाई असं.. आता उद्या चालले फिरायला, सुट्टीचा दिवस आहे ना..मला गावी घेऊन चल सांगतेय अभिलाषला तर ते नको, बायकोला फिरायला मात्र लगेच नेणार..”

जानकी चहा घेऊन आली अन सासूबाई पटकन मागे झाल्या..जानकी ने सुशीला बाईंची चौकशी केली अन निघून गेली..

“सूनबाई चांगली आहे हो तुमची…पण दोन्ही मुलांच्या बाबतीत तुम्ही वेगवेगळी वागणूक देताय बरं का..”

“ती कशी??”

“कमलेशला मित्रांसोबत रमताना पाहून तुम्हाला कौतुक वाटतं, पण अभिलाष आपल्या बायकोत रमतोय हे तुम्हाला खटकतं.. का?? अहो बायको ही नवऱ्याची सर्वात आधी मैत्रीण असते, अन मित्रांसोबत रमणे हे नैसर्गिक असते. मुलं समवयस्क व्यक्तींचं ऐकतात हे सत्य आहे, बायकोही जवळपास आपल्या मुलाच्या  वयाचीच असते, आयुष्यातल्या काही घटना एकत्र अनुभवलेल्या असतात, शिक्षण, बाहेरचं जग, तंत्रज्ञान सोबतच अनुभवलेलं असतं, अश्यावेळी त्यांना एकमेकांचे सल्लेच मोलाचे वाटणार..आणि एकवेळ मित्र वाईट निघाले, व्यसनी निघाले तर आपल्या मुलांचं पूर्ण आयुष्य खराब होऊ शकतं, पण बायको? कोणती बायको आपल्या नवऱ्याला चुकीचा सल्ला देईल? कोणती बायको आपल्या नवऱ्याला व्यसनी बनवेल? आपल्या नवऱ्याचं चांगलं व्हावं यासाठीच ती नवऱ्याला चार गोष्टी चांगल्या सांगेन ना..? मग आपल्या मुलाने मित्रांचं ऐकावं की बायकोचं?? काय वाटतं जानकीच्या सासूबाई??”

सासूबाई काही बोलायच्या आधीच अभिलाष फोनवर बोलत धावपळ करत घरी येतो..

“कुठल्या हॉस्पिटलमध्ये आहेत? मी भेटून येतो..”

जानकी त्याला जायचा इशारा करते अन तो निघून जातो..

“काय गं?? कोण आहे हॉस्पिटलमध्ये?? हा इतक्या घाईने का गेला??”

“काल यांच्या मित्रांनी पार्टी ठेवली होती, त्यात रात्री उशिरा पर्यंत सर्वांनी दारू पिली, त्या दारुतून सर्वांना विषबाधा झालीय, सगळे हॉस्पिटलमध्ये ऍडमिट आहेत आता. बरं झालं हे काल गेले नाही ते..”

“गेले नाही की पाठवलं नाही??”

“अं??” जानकी घाबरून विचारू लागली..

“बरं केलंस जे काल त्याला जाऊ दिलं नाही..असंच माझ्या मुलाला चांगल्या गोष्टी सांगत जा. आमचं तर काही ऐकत नाही, आता तुलाच आई बनून नव्याने संस्कार करावे लागतील आमच्या मुलांवर..”

सासूबाई आणि सुशिलाबाई खळखळून हसू लागल्या, जानकीला सासूबाईंच्या अश्या मोकळया अन स्पष्ट वागण्याने खूप छान वाटलं.
