ज्या मध्यस्थ व्यक्तीने हे लग्न ठरवलं होतं ते थांबले, बाकी सर्वजण निघून गेले. सूरज जाताना पुन्हा एकदा खिडकीकडे वळून बघत होता पण ती काही दिसली नाही. 2 दिवसात निरोप कळवतो असं दोन्ही कुटुंबांनी एकमेकांना सांगितलं. कारण नुसता बघायचा कार्यक्रम झाला होता, मुलाची माहिती काढून आणि बाहेरून रितसर चौकशी करूनच

 

“आता लग्न झाल्यावर मनसोक्त बघा..”

 

आईने हळूच टोमणा मारला. सूरज लाजत गाडीत बसला. 

 

सर्वजण निघून गेल्यानंतर घरात चर्चा सुरू झाली..

 

“हे स्थळ खूप छान वाटलं मला, सुशिक्षित लोकं आहेत, मुलाचा स्वभावही चांगला वाटला. आपली कोमल सुखात राहील तिथे..”

 

“होकार आला की मग स्वप्न बघा..” आई नेहमीच्या सुरात..

 

मध्यस्थ व्यक्तीची चलबिचल सूरु होती. कोमलच्या वडिलांना ते दिसलं, त्यांनी लगेच विचारलं….

 

“भाऊसाहेब? कसली काळजी लागून राहिलीये तुम्हाला?”

 

“कसं सांगावं तेच कळत नाहीये मला..”

 

“सांगा की अहो..”

 

“कोमल साठी अजून एक स्थळ आणलं आहे मी, म्हणजे तो मुलगा अमेरिकेत असतो. महिना पाच लाख पगार आहे, त्यांनी फोटो मधेच मुलीला पसंत केलं..”

 

“अहो काय सांगताय, किती चांगलं स्थळ आहे, तुम्ही सांगितलं का नाही आम्हाला आधी?”

 

“कसं सांगणार, त्यांची एकच अट आहे..”

 

“कसली?”

 

“मुलगा निदान पाच वर्षे बायकोला माहेरीच ठेवणार, नंतर त्याचा तिथला जॉब बदलला की मग बायकोला नेणार..त्याचे आई वडीलही राहतात इथे, काही दिवस तिथेही राहील..”

 

सर्वजण विचारात पडले, पण कोमलच्या मनात वेगळंच चक्र सुरू होतं, लग्न करून माहेरी पाच वर्षे राहता येईल, या काळात बहिनींचं शिक्षण, लग्न मार्गी लावता येईल, वडिलांचं कर्ज फेडता येईल. 

 

“बाबा मला चालेल हे स्थळ..”

 

“विचार कर मुली, पाच वर्षे लग्न करूनही नवऱ्यापासून लांब, असं कुणी कधी राहतं का?”

 

“काय हरकत आहे? माझं लग्न पाच वर्षांनी होतंय असं समजा..”

 

वडिलांना अमेरिका, पाच लाख डोळ्यासमोर दिसू लागले, सुखात लोळण घेणारी मुलगी दिसू लागली आणि वाडीलांनी सांगितलं..

 

“चालेल, बोलवूया त्यांना..”

 

“अहो एक घोळ झालाय”

 

“कसला?”

 

“मला वाटलं तुम्ही नकार द्याल म्हणून मी त्यांना काहीतरी कारण सांगून न येण्याबद्दल सांगितलं, ते आपल्याच गावी आलेत त्यांच्या एका नातेवाईका कडे..”

 

“अहो मग त्यात काय, सगळी तयारी झालीच आहे, बोलवून घेऊ त्यांना”

 

“ठीक आहे, चला मग लागा तयारीला..”

 

कोमलचे वडील आज खुश होते. एकाच दिवशी दोन स्थळं, तेही इतके छान. ते साहेबराव आणि बायकोशी चर्चा करू लागले,

 

“बघा ना, कोमलला नकार यायचे म्हणून किती खचलो होतो आपण, आणि बघा एकाच दिवशी इतकी छान स्थळं..”

 

“तुम्ही असं म्हणताय जसा होकारच आलाय..”

 

“येईल गं.. मला तरी वाटतं हे अमेरिका वाले पसंत करतील कोमलला. त्यांची अट आपण मान्य करूच आणि वर त्यांच्याकडे इतके पैसे असताना आपल्याकडून काही अपेक्षा ठेवणार नाहीत ते..”

 

“पण हे आत्ता आलेलं स्थळ कसं वाटलं? सूरज चांगला मुलगा वाटला मला”

 

“ही लोकं तर छानच आहे,

पण शेवटी अमेरिकेत राहणं म्हणजे एक वेगळीच शान, आपल्या गावातली कोमल पहिली मुलगी असेल जी देशाबाहेर असेल”

 

या बाबतीत आईचं मत जरा वेगळं होतं.

 

“इतक्या लांब मुलगी पाठवायची म्हणजे भीतीच की..उलट सूरज सोबत लग्न जमलं तर मुलगी डोळ्यासमोर राहील..अडीअडचणीला आपल्याला धावून जाता येईल..”

 

बाबांना हेही पटलं. 

 

“आणि जर दोघांचा होकार आला तर?” मध्यस्थी म्हणाले..

 

“मग मात्र अवघड होऊन जाईल. दोघांनी होकार दिला तर कुणाला नकार द्यायचा? दोन्हीही स्थळं उत्तम आहेत”

 

“इतक्या वेळ नकार पचवला आणि आता बघा, कुणाला होकार द्यायचा याच्या विवंचनेत सापडलो.”

 

इकडे कोमलचीही द्विधा मनस्थिती झाली, भलेही पाच वर्षे माहेरी राहता येईल पण पुढे काय? अमेरिकेला गेलो तर इकडे वर्षातून एकदा, तेही जमलं तर येता येईल. आणि त्यावेळी जर माझ्या आई बाबांना माझी गरज पडली तर? आम्हाला भाऊ नाही, आई बाबांना काही अडचण आली तर कोण धावून येईल? त्यापेक्षा सूरज सोबत लग्न केलं तर कायम त्यांच्याकडे लक्ष देणं सोपं होईल. पण…परत एक प्रश्न,

सुरजला नवरा बायकोसारखं राहायचं नाहीये, त्याला कुठल्याही बंधनात टाकणार नाही अशी बायको हवी आहे. मग माझा संसार तर कोलमडलाच की?

 

कोमल प्रचंड दुविधेत सापडली. पण अजून दुसरं स्थळ यायचं बाकी होतं. ती माणसं कशी असतील हे पाहूया आधी असा विचार तिने केला.

 

पुन्हा एकदा घर आवरण्यात आलं. पाहुणे संध्याकाळी सात वाजता येणार होते. दुपारचे चार वाजलेले, पण वडिलांचं चित्त ठिकाणावर नव्हतं. ते सारखे आत बाहेर करत होते. मुलींना सांगत होते, 

 

“छान रांगोळी काढा अंगणात, घर झाडून घ्या, सगळं समान आहे की नाही तपासून घ्या..”

 

हे सगळं सुरू असतानाच बँकेची काही लोकं समोर उभी ठाकली,

 

“आनंद पाटील तुम्हीच का?”

 

“हो मीच..”

 

“तुमच्या बँकेचे हफ्ते थकलेत, त्याचीच वसुली करायला आलोय.”

 

बाबांना घाम फुटला, मुलगी बघायचा कार्यक्रम आणि त्यात या लोकांना आजच यायचं होतं..

 

“हे बघा मला थोडी मुदत द्या, मागच्या आणि या महिन्याचा हफ्ता एकत्र भरतो..”

 

बँकेतील एक माणूस ओळखीतला असल्याने त्यांनी फार काही तमाशा केला नाही पण एक वॉर्निंग मात्र देऊन गेले.

 

हे पाहून कोमलला चीड आली,

 

“बाबांकडे कर्जाचे हफ्ते भरायला पैसे नाहीयेत, मग माझ्या लग्नाचा खर्च कुठून करणार? कशाला इतका हट्ट चाललाय माझ्या लग्नाचा? समाजासाठी? लोकं, नातेवाईक बोलू लागलेत.. मुलगी वयात आलीये, काही उलटं सुलटं करून बसायला नको म्हणून? काय म्हणावं याला..मी सांगतेय की मी इतक्यात लग्न करत नाही, चांगली नोकरी बघते, कर्जाचे हफ्ते फेडते मग बघूया लग्नाचं तर तेही नको..कर्ज काढून कर्जबाजारी होतील पण सामाजिक प्रतिष्ठा टिकवण्यासाठी तेही करायला मागेपुढे बघणार नाही..हा कसला समाज आणि हे कसले विचार..

 

संध्याकाळी साडेसात वाजता अमेरिकेचा मुलगा घरी आला. सोबत आई आणि भाऊ आलेला. मुलगा तसा दिसायला रुबाबदार होता,

अमेरिकेत राहून चेहऱ्यावर असणारं वेगळं तेज उठून दिसत होतं.

 

मुलाची आई घरभर बघत होती, जरा जास्तच नटून थटून आलेली ती. मुलगा तिला सतत खुणावून “शांत बस जरा” असं सांगत होता. मुलगा इतका रुबाबदार होता की घरातील सर्वजण त्याला बघतच राहिले. त्याचं लक्ष खिडकीतून बघत असलेल्या मुलीच्या बहिणींकडे गेलं, डोळे बारीक करून त्याने वेगळ्याच नजरेने त्यांच्याकडे एक कटाक्ष टाकला..दोघी बहिणी ओशाळल्या, मुलांची नजर मुलीला लगेच लक्षात येते..

 

“सवे, हा मुलगा असा का बघत होता?”

 

“काय माहिती…तो आधीचा मुलगा किती भारी होता ना, त्याच्या नजरेत खेळकर भाव होता..हा नाही आवडला बुवा..”
