 रात्री 1 वाजता सूरज परेशला फोन करतो..

 

“पऱ्या…”

 

डोळे चोळत..”काय रे..झोपलो होतो रे..”

 

“आत्ताच्या आत्ता घरी ये..अर्जंट..”

 

“काका काकू बरे आहेत ना?”

 

“काहीच विचारू नको, ये लवकर..”

 

परेश कसलाही विचार न करता गाडी काढतो आणि सुरजच्या घरी जातो. जाताना मनात हजारो प्रश्न असतात. 

 

“काय झालं असेल इतकं? सूरज इतका टेन्शन मध्ये का होता? काका काकूंना काही झालं तर नसेल ना? की घरात कुणी चोर घुसलाय?”

 

परेश भरधाव गाडी चालवत सुरजच्या घरी पोहोचतो. सूरज दारातच उभा असतो, 

 

“शशशशश….ये आत पटकन.. आवाज करू नको आई बाबा उठतील..”

 

परेशला घरातलं सगळं वातावरण तर शांत दिसतं, मग नक्की झालंय तरी काय? सूरज परेशला त्याच्या खोलीत घेऊन येतो आणि दार लावून घेतो.

 

“सुऱ्या… काय झालंय सांगशील का?”

 

“ती मला उद्या हो म्हणेल का रे??”

 

परेश हातात जे सापडेल ते उचलून सुरजला मारून फेकतो. आधी त्याला यथेच्छ बडवतो. दोघेही थकल्यावर बसून घेतात..

 

“सुऱ्या.. यासाठी एवढ्या रात्रीचं मला बोलावलं? अरे किती घाबरलो मी..”

 

“काय करू यार परेश, उद्याच्या चिंतेने झोप येत नव्हती मला. ती हो म्हणेल ना? आणि नाही म्हणाली तर?”

 

“हे बघ, तिला नाही म्हणायचं असतं तर तेव्हाच नाही म्हटली असती..पण तिने भेटायला बोलावलं..का? होकार द्यायलाच ना?”  – परेश सुरजला समजावतो..

 

“नाहीतर असं असेल, की तिला मला डायरेक्ट नकार द्यायला संकोच वाटला असेल.. मग उद्या निवांत मला नीट समजावत नकार देण्यासाठी बोलावलं असावं..होना परेश?”

 

परेश दीर्घ श्वास घेतो. 

 

“हो..तसंच आहे…तुला नकार देण्यासाठीच तिने बोलावलं आहे तुला.. आता मला झोपू दे. ” 

 

परेश सुरजच्याच बेडवर आडवा होऊन पडतो.

 

“पऱ्या असं नको बोलू यार..”

 

“मी? मी बोललो? तुझंच लॉजिक आहे हे.. आता ऐक, मला जाम झोप येतेय…घरी जाण्याइतपत माझ्यात आता त्राण नाही…झोपू दे मला आता..”

 

परेश डोक्यावर चादर ओढत झोपून घेतो. पण इकडे सुरजला कुठे चैन पडते…खोलीत नुसत्या फेऱ्या घालत असतो..कोमलचा मेसेज उघडतो…last seen 10:28 pm

 

“मला काळजीत टाकून झोपलीये खुशाल…”

 

रात्रीचे 3 वाजलेले असतात. परेश गाढ झोपेत असतो. त्याच्या कानाजवळ गुदगुल्या होतात. तीन चार वेळा तो कान झटकतो..शेवटी वैतागून उठून बसतो. सूरज त्याच्या कानात दोऱ्याने गुदगुल्या करत होता..

 

“सुऱ्या… झोपू देना यार..काय फलतुगिरी आहे..”

 

“अरे ऐक ना. तू माझा मित्र ना?”

 

“नाही…कुणीच नाही मी तुझा..”

 

“उठ मग, माझ्या घरात अशी परकी माणसं राहत नाही..”

 

“सुऱ्या रात्रीचे 3 वाजलेत, काय फलतुगिरी आहे..”

 

“अरे मी ना उद्या सुट्टी टाकतो. .सकाळी सकाळी जाऊ कोमलकडे..”

 

“चालेल…एक काम कर..ब्रश, टॉवेल, कपडे भर…आत्ताच जाऊन बसू…बाकीचं सगळं तिकडेच उरकू..”

 

“तसं नाही रे…पहाटे 7 वाजताच जाऊया…गावाकडे माणसं लवकर उठतात..”

 

“बरं जाऊ, आता झोपू दे म्हणजे सकाळी लवकर उठता येईल..”

 

असं म्हणत कूस बदलून परेश परत घोरू लागला..

 

“ऐक ना…”

 

“आता काय?”

 

“मला वाटतं माझ्या बियर्ड मुळे तिला मी आवडत नसावा..क्लीन शेव करू का?”

 

परेश राक्षसासारखा हसू लागतो..

 

“काय..”

 

“लहान बाळ दिसशील तू..”

 

“ऐक ना. एकच काम कर..हे ट्रीमर घे आणि जरा साईडने शेप मारून दे, आणि थोडे थोडे कमी कर फक्त..”

 

“आत्ता?”

 

“हो ना प्लिज ना रे…सकाळी वेळ नाही मिळणार..”

 

“वेडबीड लागलंय का तुला?”

 

“पऱ्या…प्लिज.  हे बघ तुला आपल्या दोस्तीची शपथ..”

 

“अरे yarrrrr..”

 

परेश कसाबसा उठतो, ट्रीमर हातात असतं तरी डोळ्यावर झोप असते. सुरज खुर्चीवर बसतो, परेश ट्रीमर घेऊन कट करू लागताच त्याला डुलकी येते…आणि..जे व्हायला नको तेच होतं..

“कोमल आवरलं का…सकाळची आरती चुकेल आपली..”

 

“हो बाबा..”

 

कोमल आणि तिचे कुटुंबीय सकाळी सकाळी जवळच्या मंदिरात आरती साठी जायला निघतात. एकादशीला ते कधीही आरती चुकवत नसत. सर्वजण मंदिरात जातात, आरती झाल्यावर कोमल देवाजवळ काहीतरी प्रार्थना करते आणि सर्वजण 8 वाजता घरी परततात.

 

सुरज आणि परेश आधीच कोमलच्या घराजवळ पोचलेले असतात. सूरज मागच्या दाराच्या झाडाखाली बसलेला असतो. कोमलचे वडील घरी येताच गोठ्यात जाऊन जनावरांना पाणी पाजण्यासाठी दोर सोडतात, 

 

“चोर…चोर.. चोर..”

 

कोमलचे वडील ओरडतात तसं सर्वजण बाहेर येतात. गायी म्हशींच्या बाजूला एक माणूस झोपलेला असतो…आवाजाने तोही दचकून उठतो..मांडी घालून बसतो आणि केविलवाण्या नजरेने इकडेतिकडे बघतो…

 

“परेशराव तुम्ही? इथे? असे का झोपले आहात?”

 

हा गोंधळ ऐकून कोमलच्या बहिणी तिथे येतात. एवढ्यात मागून दुसरा माणूस येतो..

 

“अहो झोप झालेली नाहीये त्याची म्हणून..”

 

तोंडावर हात ठेवून तो बोलत असतो..

 

“अहो तंबाकू थुका आधी मग बोला..”

 

“तंबाकू नाही ओ.. हे बघा…”

 

सूरज चेहऱ्यावरचा हात बाजूला काढतो. कोमलच्या बहिणी हसायला लागतात. सुरजने क्लीन शेव केलेली असते. तोंड लपवत तो चालत असतो.

 

“अरे सूरजराव तुम्ही? माफ करा आम्ही ओळखलं नाही..या ना आत या..”

 

परेशला बळजबरीने ओढत सूरज आत नेतो. तो तिथेही डुलक्या घेत असतो. सूरज इकडेतिकडे बघत असतो, कोमलला शोधत असतो. काहीवेळाने कोमल येते आणि समोर बसते. सुरजची धडधड वाढू लागते. कोमल तिच्या आईला आणि बहिणींना आवाज देते. सर्वजण कानात प्राण आणून कोमलचा निर्णय ऐकणार असतात.

 

“खरं तर मी सुरजला होकार देणार होते..पण..”

 

“पण काय?”

 

“पण मला दाढी मिश्या असलेला मुलगा हवा होता..सुरजने तर..”

 

सूरज तिथेच परेशला मारू लागतो..

 

“सांगत होतो…सांगत होतो लक्ष देऊन कर म्हणून…ऐकलं का, तुझ्यामुळे माझं आयुष्य बरबाद झालं..”

 

“अहो थांबा थांबा…मी गम्मत करत होते.. माझा निर्णय झालाय, मी सूरज सोबत लग्नाला तयार आहे..”

 

सूरज आणि परेश उठून उभे राहतात..परेश ही बातमी सुरजच्या घरी फोन करून कळवायला जातो…रेंज मिळत नाही म्हणून तो बाहेर जातो…सुरजला काय करू अन काय नको असं होतं. शेजारी कोमलची आई उभी असते…आनंदाच्या भरात सूरज आईलाच मिठी मारतो…नंतर भानावर येतो… माफी मागतो.. कोमलच्या बहिणी हसू लागतात. वडील देवाला जागेवरूनच नमस्कार करतात..

 

“थांबा…पण हे लग्न ज्या अटींवर मान्य केलं गेलं आहे ते पाळलं गेलंच पाहिजे.. लग्नानंतर पाच वर्षे मी इथेच राहील..”

 

आई वडील पुन्हा काळजीत पडतात..सुरजला ते मान्य असतं.

 

“चालेल ना, ठरलं आहे ना आपलं..”

 

“ठरलं नाही, स्टॅम्प पेपर्स वर तसा करार करून घेतलाय मी. यावर सही कर .”

 

सूरज सही करतो. आई वडिल अटी नियम विसरून या आनंदात काहीकाळ हरवून जातात. सूरज घरी जाताना 2 किलो पेढे नेतो. परेशला मात्र आता झोपायची पडलेली असते..

 

“पऱ्या…”

 

“बस…आता झालं ना तुझ्या मनासारखं? आता काहीही सांगू नकोस..मी चाललो घरी झोपायला..”

 

“नाही, इथेच झोपायचं… अरे तु इतकी मदत केली मला..तुझी खातीरदारी तर करू दे..”

 

“सगळं नंतर कर रे बाबा..आधी मला झोपायला जाऊदे..”

 

“तुझ्या झोपण्याची जंगी तयारी केलीय मी..”

 

“झोपण्याची तयारी?”

 

“हो चल..”

 

सूरज त्याला त्याच्या बेडरूममध्ये घेऊन जातो आणि म्हणतो..

 

“बघ…”

 

परेशच्या डोळ्यावरची झोपच उडून जाते..समोरचं दृश्य पाहून त्याला हसावं की रडावं तेच समजत नाही. आनंदाच्या भरात सूरज नुसता वेडा झालेला असतो..वेड्याच्या भरात त्याने काय काय केलेलं असतं.  

 

“जा झोप आता..”

 

“सुऱ्या अरे माझी काय सुहागरात आहे काय? हा काय गुलाबांनी बेड सजवून ठेवलाय?”

 

“मित्रा..तुझ्यासाठी काहीपण..जा झोप..आज तुला राजेशाही झोप मिळणार..”
