भाग 1
समोरून परेशला आलेलं पाहून सुरजमध्ये एकच वीज संचारते. कारण परेश एकटाच आलेला नसतो तर सोबत भल्या मोठ्या तीन बॅग्स आणलेल्या असतात. सूरज वेड्यासारखा धावत सुटतो आणि परेशही हातातल्या बॅग्स खाली टाकून सुरजकडे धावतो.. दोघेही एकमेकांच्या टक्कर देऊन मिठी मारतात आणि जमिनीवर लोळत नुसते ओरडू लागतात. धाप टाकत सूरज म्हणतो..
“पऱ्या… मला माहित होतं तू येशील..”
“विषय ए का, माझा मित्र इथे आणि माझा जीव कसा लागेल तिथे?”
“पऱ्या..मेरी जान..”
“बरं या बॅग्स ठेवायच्या आहेत, कुठेय तुझी रूम..”
“रूम? ये दाखवतो..”
सूरज परेशला त्याची छोटीशी मातीची खोली दाखवतो. ते बघून परेश गपगार होतो. सुरजला परेशचे हावभाव पाहून हसू येतं.
“पऱ्या, माझंही तोंड असंच झालेलं खोलीला बघुन..”
“सुऱ्या आपण इथे राहणार?”
“हो..पर्याय नाही..बट डोन्ट वरी माय फ्रेंड…या एवढ्याश्या खोलीला सुद्धा फाईव्ह स्टार रूम सारखं बनवू आपण..”
“ते कसं?”
“या खोलीत ठेवायला सगळं सामान मागवलं आहे मी…टेबल, चेयर, tv, गॅस शेगडी, काही किराणा माल..माझा एक माणूस घेऊन येईलच लवकर..”
“अरे पण इतका खर्च कशाला केलास”
“काही काळजी करू नकोस, मी इथे असलो तरी दरमहा पगार चालू राहणार आहे माझा..”
“वा…चला चांगलं आहे… मी कधी सेटल होतोय एकदाचा असं झालंय..”
“अभ्यास करत रहा, एक दिवस नक्की यश येईल..”
“हो रे..इथेही आणली आहेत पुस्तकं.. म्हटलं अभ्यासाला शांत वातावरण मिळेल..”
“सकाळीच करत जा अभ्यास, रात्री लाईट नसेल…”
“अरे देवा…”
“अरे हे खेडेगाव आहे..”
परेश आणि सूरज मिळून त्यांची रूम स्वच्छ करतात. रूम मध्ये झोपायला एक खाट टाकतात, त्यावर एक चादर अंथरतात, दोन खुर्च्या दाराबाहेर ठेवतात, गॅस शेगडी मांडतात पण सिलेंडर चा बंदोबस्त होईना, म्हणून चुलीवरच सगळं करायचं ठरवतात. परेश गावातल्या मार्केट मध्ये जाऊन काही भांडी, चहा, साखर, डाळी, कुकर, कढई, पातेले वगैरे वस्तू आणतो. दोघे मिळून एवढ्याशा खोलीत संसार (?) थाटतात. हुश्श…
संध्याकाळ पर्यंत बऱ्यापैकी सगळी सोय होऊन गेलेली असते. आता दोघांना कडकडून भूक लागलेली असते. पण बनवणार कोण? दोघेही पेटवलेल्या चुलीत एकेक करून काड्या टाकत असतात..
“पऱ्या अरे काय नुसत्या काड्या टाकतोय, काहीतरी बनव की..”
“पाहुणा मी आलोय तुझ्याकडे.. तू पाहुणचार कर माझा..”
सूरज डोक्याला हात लावतो.
“सुऱ्या खिचडी सोपी असते ना रे?”
“हो..तांदूळ, डाळ, मसाले आहेत तसे…करूया का??”
“बरं घे ते पातेले.. आधी काय करायचं असतं??”
“कोमलला फोन करून विचारलं असतं, पण सालं नेटवर्क मिळतच नाही इथे..”
“अरे आपण करूया ना..मला वाटतं आधी पाणी उकळत ठेवायचं असतं..”
“कशाला?”
“म्हणजे तांदूळ आणि डाळ शिजेल ना त्यात..”
“मग कांदा, बटाटा, मसाले कधी टाकायचे?”
खिचडीत काय काय असतं हे त्यांना माहीत होतं, पण काय केव्हा टाकायचं याचा क्रम त्यांना काही येत नव्हता..
“पऱ्या, एकदम सोपं..हे बघ, खिचडीत शेवटी सगळं एकत्रच शिजतं ना, मग आपण आधी सगळं एकत्र करू आणि मग शिजायला टाकू..”
“बेस्ट आयडिया..”
परेश तांदूळ आणि डाळ एका ताटात आणतो,
“किती तांदूळ घ्यावे?”
“हे बघ, मी एवढी खिचडी खातो, म्हणजे हाताच्या चार मुठा बसतील एवढी..म्हणजे बरोबर चार मूठ तांदूळ…”
“मीही तेवढीच खातो, माझेही चार मूठ तांदूळ..”
“आज भूक जरा जास्त आहे ना, 2 मूठ अजून टाक..”
“टाकली..”
“ती तुझी झाली, माझी?”
“हे घे अजून 2 मूठ..”
“बस??”
“Extra ची असू द्यावी…उरली तर सकाळी गरम करू..”
“चालेल, ह्या अजून 3 मूठ..”
परातभर तांदूळ आणि त्याच्या निम्मी डाळ घेतली जाते.
त्यात परेश थोडसं तेल, मिरच्या, बारीक चिरलेले कांदे, बटाटे, मीठ, मसाले सगळं कालवतो.
“हे बघ, premix तयार..आता हे कढईत टाक, पाणी ओत आणि झाकण ठेवून शिजू दे..”
सूरज कढई चुलीवर ठेऊन त्यावर झाकण ठेवतो आणि दोघेही एक सुस्कारा टाकतात.
“अरे सोपं असतं रे खाणं बनवणं..बरं आता शिजायला जरा वेळ लागेल.. आपण बाहेर बसू .”
तू चल बाहेर मी जरा हे आवरून घेतो..परेश सुरजला म्हणाला ..
सूरज बाहेर जातो, दाराबाहेर टाकलेल्या खुर्चीवर बसतो..तिथेच परेशचा मोबाईल असतो, परेशच्या वडिलांचा फोन येत असतो.. परेशला देण्यापेक्षा आपणच बोलून घ्यावं असं सूरज म्हणतो..
“हॅलो काका, परेश पोचलाय बरं का..”
“बरं बरं… आणि हो, त्याला पूर्णवेळ अभ्यासाला लाव, एक तर आमच्या घरी गावाकडून माझे आई वडील राहायला आले, घर आधीच लहान ..परेशच्या अभ्यासाची पंचाईत झाली…लायब्ररी सुदधा कोसो दूर …त्याला बळजबरी तुझ्याकडे पाठवलं..म्हटलं सूरज तिथे एकटाच असेल, त्यालाही सोबत होईल आणि तुझ्याही अभ्यासाच्या जागेची सोय होईल..”
एवढं ऐकून सूरज फोन ठेवतो..
“पऱ्या…..”
सूरज मोठ्याने ओरडत आत जातो.
“काय झालं?”
“तुला अभ्यासाला जागा नव्हती म्हणून आलास ना इथे?”
परेश हसू लागतो..
“मला वाटलं माझा जिगरी दोस्त माझी साथ सोडणार नाही म्हणून आलास.. तेव्हा किती मोठमोठे डायलॉग मारत होतास रे??”
दोघांमध्ये चांगलीच जुंपते… बाहेर येऊन दोघे एकमेकांना तुडवेपर्यंत भांडत होते..ते पाहुन समोर रहात असलेले अण्णा पाटील येतात..
“काय रे पोरांनो काय चाललंय? आणि हा कोण?”
“हा..माझा…मित्र परेश..”
सूरज धाप टाकत बोलू लागतो..
“हे बघ सुरेश याचे पैसे बाकी असतील तर देऊन टाक.. मित्र म्हणता आणि असे भांडता?”
परेशला सुरेश म्हणताच सुरजला हसू येऊ लागलं.. परेश अजून चवताळतो..खिशातून दहा रुपये काढतो आणि सुरजच्या हातात देतो..
“घे..आणि पुन्हा मला फोन करू नकोस..”
ते बघून अण्णा पाटील ओरडतात..
“दहा रुपयासाठी इतकं सूरजराव? इतका चिंगूसपणा बरा नव्हे..”
“बघा ना… ” परेश लाडात येऊन अण्णा पाटीलला म्हणतो..
“काहीतरी जळायचा वास येतोय..” – सूरज
“तूच जळतो माझ्यावर… लोकं माझी बाजू घेतात ते सहन होत नाही तुला..चिंगूस कुठला..”
“अहो खरंच वास येतोय..” -अण्णा पाटील
परेश आणि सुरजला खिचडीची आठवण येते..दोघेही डोक्याला हात लावत आत पळतात. अण्णा पाटीलही त्यांच्या मागे मागे जातात. सूरज पटकन कढई वरचं झाकण बाजूला करतो..सुगंध तर छान येत असतो पण कढईत काठोकाठ खिचडी बनलेली असते…
परेश आजी सूरज एकमेकांकडे “इतकी कशी बनली??” नजरेने बघत होते..मागून अण्णा पाटील येउन विचारतात..
“आज गावजेवण घालणार वाटतं..”
