 बाबांनी रोहनच्या हातातून मोबाईल हिसकावून घेतला आणि धाडकन सोफ्यावर आदळला. रोहनची बायको समिधा धावत बाहेर आली.बाबांचं हे रूप रोहनने पहिल्यांदा बघितले होतं. रोहनच्या पंधराव्या वर्षी त्याची आई गेल्यानंतर बाबांनी रोहनला तळहातावरच्या फोडाप्रमाणे जपलं होतं. त्याचं शिक्षण, लग्न सगळं जबाबदारीने पार पाडलं होतं. लग्नानंतर बाबा खरं तर व्यापातून निवृत्त झाले होते, पण आज अचानक त्यांना असं काय झालं की ते इतके चिडले?

“बाबा, काय झालं??”

“ऑफिसमधून केव्हा आलास?”

“आत्ताच?”

“आल्या आल्या काय केलंस?”

“फ्रेश झालो अन चहा घेतला..”

“आत्ता काय करतोय?”

“मोबाईल मध्ये जरा टाईमपास..”

“नंतर काय करणार?”

“जिम ला जाणार..आल्यावर जेवण करणार, थोडा वेळ tv पाहणार..आणि झोपी जाणार..”

“उद्या सकाळी सुट्टी आहे, काय प्लॅन?”

“मित्र मिळून महाबळेश्वर ला जाणार आहोत मुक्कामी..”

“सुट्टीच्या दिवशी तुम्ही कायम हेच करतात..”

“बाबा मी असं काय वेगळं करतोय की ज्याने तुम्हाला राग येतोय?”

“चल माझ्यासोबत..”

बाबा त्याला त्यांच्या खोलीत नेतात. कपाटात एक जुनी लाकडी पेटी असते. बाबा ती पेटी उघडतात अन एक जीर्ण झालेली डायरी रोहनच्या हातात टेकवतात. 

“कसली डायरी आहे बाबा?”

“बघ तर खरं..”

रोहन ती डायरी उघडतो, त्यात लिहिलेलं असतं..

तारीख 1 ऑक्टोबर 1995

“संध्याकाळी उशिरा येईन”

“जेवायला काय आहे?”

“एक ग्लास पाणी आण..”

तारीख 2 ऑक्टोबर 1995

“माझे मित्र येणारेत, पोहे बनव छान..”

“रोहनला कमी गुण मिळाले, लक्ष देत जा जरा..”

असे जवळपास रोजचे संवाद त्यात लिहिलेले होते. रोहनला काही समजत नव्हतं. रोहन फक्त पानं चाळत होता. बाबांनी विचारलं..

“काही समजतंय?”

“नाही..”

“मलाही नव्हतं समजलं, आणि जेव्हा समजलं तोपर्यंत खूप उशीर झालेला. तुझी आई कशाने गेली माहितीये? मेंदूची नस फुटली होती तिची, सततचे विचार, मनातलं दुखलेलं खुपलेलं, टोचणारी सल मनातच दाबून ठेवत होती, बाहेर काढायचा एकमेव मार्ग मी होतो.. पण मीही तुझ्यासारखाच…पेपर वाचत बस, मित्रांसोबत फिरायला जा, आणि काहीच नसेल तेव्हा सरळ झोपून घ्या. आपल्याला एक बायको आहे आणि तिच्यासोबत संवाद साधायचा असतो हे आपण लक्षातच घेत नाही. ती गेल्यानंतर तिची ही डायरी सापडली, रोज मी तिच्याशी काय बोललो हे ती लिहून ठेवायची, ते शब्द जपून ठेवायची, त्या शब्दातच तिचा संसार चालू होता, त्या शब्दांनाच ती फक्त कवटाळत होती, मला कितीदा सांगण्याचा प्रयत्न केला पण मी माझ्याच दुनियेत…बघ ही डायरी, फक्त 2 ते 3 वाक्य दिवसभरात तिच्याशी बोलायचो मी..तुही त्याच मार्गाने जात आहेस, समिधा बद्दल तुझं काही कर्तव्य आहे की नाही? बिचारी एकटी सगळं घर आवरत असते, कसलीही अपेक्षा करत नाही.. पण म्हणून तिला असं गृहीत धरशील का??”

रोहनच्या डोळ्यातील अश्रू त्या डायरीवर ओघळू लागले, आणि दाराआडून समिधा समाधानाचे अश्रू ढाळत होती..
