शोभा काकू धावपळ करत होत्या, आज त्यांच्या लाडक्या मुलीला पाहायला पाहुणे येणार होते. अगदी मनाजोगतं स्थळ होतं… मुलगा दिसायला देखणा, सुशिक्षित कुटुंब, आर्थिक सुबत्ता..सगळं काही होतं… हे स्थळ हातातून जाऊ द्यायचं नव्हतं… पण…कीर्तीच्या चेहऱ्यावर असलेल्या हलक्याश्या डागांमुळे काकू धास्तावल्या होत्या…शाळेत असताना चेहऱ्यावर थोडसं infection झालं आणि गालावर हलकेसे डाग उमटले होते, ते अजूनही तसेच होते…लग्नाला अडचण नको म्हणून डॉक्टरांचा सल्ला घेतला, लेसर ट्रीटमेंट ची तयारी दाखवली …पण डॉक्टरांनी मात्र स्पष्ट सांगितलं की अवास्तव खर्च करू नका…हे डाग अगदी साधारण आहेत, लग्नाला काहीही अडचण येणार नाही..डॉकटर असे म्हटले आणि काका काकू निर्धास्त झाले…
पण जे व्हायचं तेच झालं…2 स्थळ येऊन गेली, आणि त्या डागांमुळे तिला नकार ऐकावा लागला…आता हे तिसरं स्थळ..कीर्ती तयार होत होती पण मनातून पूर्ण खचली होती, पुन्हा एकदा नकार पचवायची तयारी करत होती…आरशात स्वतःच्या चेहऱ्याकडे बघून ती स्वतःलाच अपराधी समजत होती,
“मुलगी म्हणून जन्माला आले हे चुकलं का माझं? हेच डाग जर मुलाच्या चेहऱ्यावर असते तर???”
तिकडे आई कासावीस झालेली, वडील घरी परतले नव्हते…इतक्यात पाहुणे आलेही…आई सैरभैर झाली..तिने पाहुण्यांचं घाबरतच स्वागत केलं, पूर्ण लक्ष मात्र दरवाजाकडे…
“मुलीचे वडील नाहीत का घरात?”
“हो ते जरा बाहेर गेलेत, येतीलच इतक्यात..”
“आम्ही येणार हे माहीत नव्हतं का?” मुलाची आई म्हणाली..
कीर्ती ची आई मनातून दुःखी झाली…एक तर कसंबसं स्थळ मिळालं त्यात हे ऐकावं लागत होतं…
बराच वेळ वाट पाहून शेवटी सगळे वैतागले…
“वडील येतील तेव्हा येतील…मुलीला दाखवा..”
आई कीर्ती ला बोलावून आणते…कीर्ती खाली मान घालून समोर येते…
मुलगा, त्याची आई आणि त्याचे वडील तिला निरखून बघत असतात…
तिला बघितल्या बघितल्या त्यांचा प्रश्न..
“हे गालावर डाग कसले आहेत??”
या पहिल्याच प्रश्नाने कीर्ती घाबरून गेली, आई धीर करत म्हणाली…
“उन्हाळ्यात तिला इन्फेक्शन झालं होतं, त्याचेच डाग आहेत ते…फार असे दिसत नाहीत, नॉर्मल आहेत…डॉकटरही म्हणाले तसं..”
आईने खरं खरं सांगून टाकले…
“दिसत नाहीत काय? आम्हाला स्पष्ट दिसताय….कोड वगैरे नाही ना? आम्हाला फसवत तर नाही ना?”

कीर्ती मधील गुण, तिची कला, तिची हुशारी, तिचा गोड स्वभाव…हे सगळं त्या डागांनी झाकोळून टाकलं होतं…ते काहीही न पाहता सर्वांना फक्त ते डाग दिसत होते…
“रोशन चल इथून…आपल्याला फसवायला निघाले होते हे..आणि वडील तर आधीच तोंड लपवून बसले…समोर कुठे आले? यावरूनच समजतंय…”
पाहुणे उठले आणि इतक्यात दारात कीर्ती चे वडील…
त्यांचा चेहरा रागाने लाल झालेला…आई लगबगीने त्यांच्याजवळ येऊन त्यांना काही बोलणार इतक्यात त्यांनी तिला तिथेच थांबायचा इशारा केला…
“माझ्या मुलीच्या चेहऱ्यावरच्या डागांनी तुम्हाला इतका त्रास होतोय ना? मग स्वतःच्या मुलाच्या चारित्र्यावर जे डाग आहेत त्याचं काय?”
“काय बोलताय तुम्ही??”
“होय…मी मिठाईच्या दुकानात गेलेलो, तिथल्या मालकाशी बोलणं झालं आणि योगायोगाने तो रोशन च्या ओळखीचा निघाला…त्याने रोशन ची सर्व हकीकत सांगितली…मुलींची छेड काढण्याच्या कितीतरी केस झालेल्या आहेत या मुलावर…एक नंबर चा व्यसनी, जुगारी आणि आळशी माणूस आहे हा…नोकरीवरून याला कधीच काढून टाकलं होतं…इतकं सगळं याच्या आई वडिलांना माहीत असूनही त्यांना स्वतःच्या मुलाच्या चरित्र्यावरचे डाग न दिसता माझ्या मुलीच्या चेहऱ्यावरचे तिची चूक नसताना नैसर्गिकरित्या आलेले डाग दिसताय??”
हे ऐकून मुलाचे आईवडील एकदम गार पडले..
“हे बघा…तुम्ही शांत व्हा…आम्ही तयार आहोत लग्नाला, फक्त ही गोष्ट कुणाला सांगू नका बाहेर…”
