आमच्याकडे आलेल्या पाहुण्यांमधल्या त्या निरागस स्त्री ने माझं लक्ष वेधून घेतलं होतं..अगदी टिपिकल म्हणावं ना तसं…”बाईच्या जातीने काय काय करायला हवं बाई?” असा प्रश्न तिला विचारावा वाटला…कारण ऐकलेली, वाचलेली स्त्री ची सगळी गुणसंपदा तिच्यातून दिसून येत होती…आल्या आल्या डोक्यावरचा पदर नीट केला, एक स्मितहास्य केलं, कसलाही विचार न करता किचन मध्ये येऊन ओट्याजवळ उभी राहिली…तिला बसायला सांगितलं तरी उभीच…तसाच चहा दिला…माझा शेवटचा घोट पी पर्यन्त तिने सर्वांकडून कप जमा करून धुवून स्वच्छ करून टाकलेली…तिची नजर अजून काही काम आहे का हेच शोधत होती…

अश्या बाईचं कुणाला कौतुक वाटणार नाही? काम करताना ती अगदी यंत्राप्रमाणे झटपट करे…पण तिला काही बोललेलं उमजत नसायचं लवकर…गोंधळून जायची…तिची सासू जवळच असायची कायम..सासू एक शब्दही तिला कसली सूचना देत नसे..पण ही काही थांबायला तयार नाही.

एकदा तिला बाजूला घेऊन मी विचारलंच…

“काय करता हो तुम्ही?”

“घरीच असते..”

“हो पण काही छंद असतील ना, कसली आवड…”

“पूर्ण दिवस कामात जातो बघ..”

मोठ्या उत्साहाने ती सांगत होती, कसलाही वैतागलेला भाब तिच्या मनात नव्हता… तिला आनंद वाटत होता घरातल्या कामांचा…म्हटलं चला, आनंदी आनंद आहे..

मी सहज विचारलं…

“किती जण घरात?”

“12 जण..”

“12?”

“हो..शहरात आलेले नातेवाईक, त्यांचं कुटुंब सगळं इथेच राहतं..”

“स्वयंपाक?”

“आम्ही दोन जणी करतो..”

ऐकलं होतं की यांच्या कुटुंबाचा फार मोठा व्यवसाय आहे..मोठमोठ्या प्रॉपर्टी करून ठेवत होते…इतका पैसा होता मग…

“घरात कामाला बाई असेल..”

“नाही..”

“भांडे?”

“मीच घासते..”

“फारशी? कपडे?”

“मीच..”

अगं बाई आहेस की कोण आहेस. .इतकं काम कुणी करतं का? मी मनाशीच..

“रात्री लवकर झोपत असाल..”

“मग दुपारी झोपत असाल..”

मला विचार करूनच चक्कर आली… 12 लोकांचं ही बाई एकटी करतेय..तेही आनंदाने…

इतक्यात तिला चक्कर आली… तिने डोक्याला हात लावला..

“काय होतंय??”

“काही नाही..ते भांडे राहिले की…मी घासून टाकते आण..”

मला लक्षात आलं..ही बाई तिच्या परिघात इतकी एकरूप झालीये की आपल्यावर अन्याय होतोय, आपण एका चौकटीत स्वतःला बांधून आपलं आयुष्य जगायचं सोडून देतोय याची तसूभरही जाणीव तिला नव्हती…

दिवसभर राब राब राबणारी बाई रात्री 1 ला झोपते…सकाळी 5 ला उठते…4 तासात काय झोप होत असेल?

पण ज्यांना आपल्यावर अन्याय होतोय याची जाणीवच नाहीये….ती जाणीव होण्याइतपत त्यांच्यातल्या जाणिवा सुद्धा मारल्या गेल्या आहेत अश्या स्त्रियांना कुठला स्त्रीवाद पचनी पडेल??
