 श्रीधर तिकडे हर्षदा ला भेटतो आणि इकडे मंगेश मोनिका च्या घरी येतो. त्याला असं अचानक आलेलं पाहून ती धास्तावते. मंगेश गेल्या गेल्या तिचा हात हात हातात हात घेऊन तिच्या डोळ्यात पाहतो. मोनिका क्षणाचाही विचार न करता हात झटकते, पुढच्याच क्षणाला तिने असं का केलं हे तिलाच कळलं नाही. मंगेश वर तिचं प्रेम होता ना? 

मंगेश ला वाईट वाटलं, पण पुढे तो म्हणाला..

“हे बघ, मी त्या वेळी कुठे गेलेलो, परत का आलो नाही याला आता महत्व नाही, मजबुरी होती माझी, आणि मला विचारुही नकोस, आज आलोय ना मी परत? आता नवीन सुरवात करू आपण”

तिकडे हर्षदा सोबत श्रीधर बोलत असतो, 

“मंगेश बद्दल तू हे काय बोलतेय? मोनिका चं प्रेम होतं त्याच्यावर, तो कसा चुकीचा असू शकतो?”

“प्रेम?? ऐक मग आता पूर्ण गोष्ट. मंगेश…आमच्या दोघींच्या आयुष्याला लागलेली कीड. मंगेश ने मोनिका सोबत प्रेमाची साथ निभावत असताना एक दिवस अचानक तो माझ्याकडे आला, मला प्रेमाच्या जाळ्यात ओढलं आणि मोनिका वर खरं प्रेम नसून तुझ्यावर आहे असं म्हणत मला शब्दांच्या जाळ्यात ओढलं. मोनिका चं लग्न ज्या दिवशी ठरलं तेव्हा मंगेश ने मला सांगितलं की आता मोनिका ची अडचण आपल्या नात्यात राहणार नाही, मोनिका ला वचन देऊन तो तिकडे गेलाच नाही. त्याच दिवशी माझ्या घरी आमच्या प्रेमप्रकरणा बद्दल समजलं. आई वडिलांनी खूप समजावलं मला, पण मी वेडी झालेली त्याच्या प्रेमात. शेवटी आई वडिलांनी मला घेऊन शहर सोडून जायचा निर्णय घेतला. मोनिका ला काहीही कल्पना नाही की तिच्या मागे काय चाललंय. ती बिचारी त्याची वाट पहात बसली”

श्रीधर रागाने लालबुंद होतो.

“हे खरं आहे? खरं असेल तर मला मोनिका ला त्याचा स्वाधीन करायचं नाही…ज्याने माझ्या मोनिका ला फसवलं त्याचा हातात मी माझं ह्रदय देणार नाही…आणि तुझं काय झालं पुढे??”

“तेच जे त्याने मोनिका सोबत केलं…मलाही तो नंतर टाळू लागला आणि अचानक गायब झाला.”

श्रीधर तडक तिथून निघतो, गाडी काढतो आणि भरधाव वेगाने घराकडे जातो. हर्षदा त्याला थांबवायचा प्रयत्न करते…याने रागरागात काही विपरीत केलं तर? तीही त्याचा मागे तिची गाडी काढून निघते.

इकडे मंगेश मोनिक ला सांगतो, मला माझं प्रेम हवंय. आपण एकत्र येऊ..मोनिका काहीही बोलत नाही. मंगेश तिला म्हणतो की आज संध्याकाळी मी घरी येईन परत, तुझा निर्णय मला सांग. मंगेश तिथून निघून जातो.

थोड्या वेळाने श्रीधर घरी येतो, डोळे लाल झालेले असतात, अंग थरथरत असतं…

मोनिका घाबरते, याला समजलं तर नाही ना मंगेश इथे आलेला म्हणून?

“मोनिका, मी तुला त्याचा कडे जाऊ देणार नाही..एक नंबर चा नालायक माणूस आहे तो..”

मोनिका ला नवल वाटतं, कालपर्यंत हा मला त्याच्यासोबत जायला सांगत होता, आणि आता काय झालं??

“हे बघ, अशीही मी त्याचकडे परत जाणारच नव्हते..पण तुला असुरक्षितता वाटू लागली का आता?मी जाऊ नये म्हणून आमच्या प्रेमाला कलंक लावू नकोस, एकेकाळी प्रेम केलेलं मी त्याच्यावर, त्याला वाईट ठरवू नकोस..”

“मोनिका ऐक माझं…”

“मी नाही जात त्याचकडे..बस??”

“अगं फक्त तेवढंच नाहीये, त्यापलीकडे खूप काही झालेलं…”

श्रीधर तिला हर्षदा कडून ऐकलेली सर्व हकीकत सांगतो..

“वाह, काय कहाणी बनवलीस रे… तू असला काही बनाव आणशील हे माहीतच नव्हतं…”

“मोनिका….”

मोठयाने बोलत हर्षदा घरात येते…

“तू?? इतक्या वर्षांनी…?”

“ते सगळं सोड..श्रीधर जे म्हणतोय ते सगळं खरं आहे…”

“म्हणजे…म्हणजे मंगेश आणि तू??”

“होय, खूप मोठी चूक होती माझी..”

मोनिका मटकन खाली बसते…

“इतके वर्ष ज्या अधुऱ्या प्रेमाची सल मनात घेऊन बसले होते ते फसवं निघालं…ज्याची वाट बघत बसले ते खोटं निघालं…का मी त्याच्या आठवणीत आयुष्याचे इतके क्षण दुःखात घालवले? का खऱ्या प्रेमाला डावलून मृगजलप्रमाणे त्याची चाहूल घेत बसले??”

“जरुरी था ये भी…” हर्षदा म्हणते…

“का? काय गरज होती….”

“त्याशिवाय तुला श्रीधर च्या प्रेमाची उत्कटता समजली असती? अगं जो तुझ्या सुखासाठी त्याचं आयुष्य पणाला लावतो, तू कधीही न बोलून दाखवलेली सल जो आपसूक ओळखतो…तुझ्या प्रेमासाठी स्वतःच्या प्रेमाचा त्याग करायला तयार होतो…अश्या श्रीधर शी नवीन ओळख झाली असती?”

मोनिका आणि श्रीधर फक्त एकमेकाकडे बघून आपल्या प्रेमाला मनभरून पहात होते. हर्षदा निघून जाते. 

श्रीधर तिला सांगतो, प्रेम ही एक पवित्र भावना आहे, मंगेश ने ते अपवित्र केलं म्हणून काय झालं…पण तुझ्याकडून तर ते योग्य होतं ना? स्वीकार कर…मंगेश चा नाही, तर तु केलेल्या प्रेमाचा… 

थोड्या वेळात मंगेश आत येतो…

मोनिका काही बोलणार इतक्यात श्रीधर म्हणतो, अरे मंगेश ये की…मोनिका जा चहा बनव…

मोनिका रागाने आत जाते, कप घेऊन बाहेर येते..

“हे काय…चहा नाही??”

“यापुढे फक्त कॉफी बनेल…कॉफी ची सर चहा ला कधीही येणार नाही…”

श्रीधर आणि मंगेश, दोघांना त्यांची उत्तरं मिळाली…

नंतर सर्वांनी मंगेश चा चांगलाच समाचार घेतला.

तो दिवस श्रीधर आणि मोनिका च्या नात्याचा पुनर्जन्म होता…

त्या रात्री दोघेही या सर्व वादळातून बाहेर पडलो म्हणून बाहेर जायला निघाले, हे सगळं का व्हावं..माझ्यासोबत असा नियतीने खेळ का खेळावा म्हणून मनस्ताप करत होती…

मात्र गाडीत चालू असलेल्या गाण्याने मोनिका ला उपरती झाली,
