मंगेश आणि श्रीधर चहा पित असतात, मंगेश च्या मनातही तितकंच काहूर माजलेलं असतं. त्या दिवशी तिला म्हटलो परत येईन, पण गेलोच नाही…गेलो तो कायमचाच. आणि आज आयुष्याच्या अश्या वळणावर आम्ही भेटतोय?

“मंगेश..अरे कुठे हरवलास..”

“अं? काही नाही…बर चल मी निघतो…”

“अरे किती पाऊस आहे बाहेर..थांब जरा वेळ..”

इतक्यात श्रीधर चा फोन वाजतो आणि तो फोन घेऊन बेड मध्ये निघून जातो, आता हॉल मध्ये मोनिका आणि मंगेश फक्त असतात.

बाहेर वातावरण अगदी तसंच होतं, ज्या ज्या वेळी ते भेटलेले..तेव्हा असाच पाऊस असायचा, थांबायचं नाव घेईना..आणि मग त्यांचा भेटीचा वेळ वाढे.. पाऊस हवाहवासा वाटे..पण आज तोच पाऊस त्यांना नकोसा झाला..मंगेश आणि मोनिका ने एकमेकांकडे पाहिलं..कितीतरी वेळ शांतता होती..शेवटी मोनिका ने हिम्मत एकटवून विचारलं…”कसा आहेस??”

“आहे अजून तसाच…तू लग्न करून पुढे गेलीस..”

“मी अजूनही तसाच आहे…एकटा…”

हे ऐकून मात्र मोनिका ला अपराधी वाटलं, तिच्या हृदयात एकच कळ उठली…

“प्रेम खरं होतं माझं…मी स्वार्थी झाले का? आयुष्यात पुढे निघून गेले..पण माझी काय चूक? मी तर वाट पाहत होते, मंगेश परत आलाच नाही…मी काय केलं असतं मग??”

मोनिका स्वतःशीच विचार करू लागली…

दोघेही आपल्या जुन्या दिवसात हरवले..

भाजी मार्केट मध्ये हर्षदा आणि मोनिका, दोघी मैत्रिणी भाजीपाला घ्यायला आलेल्या. भाजी निरखत दोघीही जात असताना अचानक मंगेश चा तिला धक्का लागला..

दोघांची नजरानजर झाली, आणि पहिल्या कटाक्षात प्रेम की काय म्हणतात ना तेच झालं…

मंगेश, पिळदार शरीर, उंचापुरा देखणा..आणि आपल्या सौंदर्याने कुणावरही भुरळ पडणारी मोनिका..दोघेही एकमेकांना तोडीस तोड..

“मोने उठ…चल…”

हर्षदा ने तिला धक्का दिला तेव्हा ती भानावर आली..त्या दिवशी पूर्ण वेळ ती त्याचा विचार करत होती. कोण होता तो? काय नाव असेल? पुन्हा भेटेल का मला?

पुढच्या आठवड्यात ती पुन्हा मार्केट मध्ये गेली हर्षदा सोबत, पण तिची नजर त्याला शोधत होती..भाजी घेऊनही झाली पण तो काही दिसेना..

“छे बुवा..तो कशाला याच वेळी याच ठिकाणी येईल..इतकी लोकं येतात इथे…”

निराश होऊन ती निघाली इतक्यात मंडईच्या कोपऱ्यात तिला तो दिसला..तो तिच्याकडेच हसून पाहत होता. तिची त्याला शोधणारी नजर त्याने बरोबर हेरली होती.

मोनिका लाजली आणि हसली.

ती हसली आणि मंगेश ला तिच्या प्रेमाची खात्री पटली.

दर सोमवारी तो तिला दिसे, मग काय..सोमवार त्यांचा भेटीचा वार ठरला..एकमेकांशी एक शब्दही न बोलता..

कित्येक दिवस हेच चालत होतं, एव्हाना हर्षदाच्याही ते लक्षात आलं..

आता दोघांनी बोलायचं ठरवलं..

घाबरत, लाजत..एकदाचा दोघांत संवाद झाला..मग तो वाढतच गेला..

एके दिवशी मोनिका च्या घरी तिला पाहायला पाहुणे आले, तिला काहीही कल्पना नव्हती, आईने बळजबरी तिला पाहुण्यांसमोर नेले..कार्यक्रम पार पडला…

त्यांचा निरोप यायच्या आधी मोनिका ने मंगेश ला गाठलं..माझ्या घरी लग्नासाठी माझा हात मागायला ये, नाहीतर वेळ निघून जाईल.असं म्हणत ती गयावया करू लागली.

मंगेश ने तिला धीर दिला..”तू अजिबात काळजी करू नको..मी आजच तुझ्या घरी येईन..आणि अशी रडू नकोस, तुझ्या डोळ्यात पाणी मी सहन करणार नाही..”

मोनिकाच्या जीवात जीव आला. संध्याकाळची ती वाट पाहू लागली, आता येईल तेव्हाच येईल..तो आलाच नाही..

इकडे मुलाकडच्यांनी होकार कळवला..एकेक गोष्टी पुढे जात होत्या, मोनिका ची घरात सांगायची हिम्मत नव्हती, आणि सांगितलं तरी मंगेश चा पत्ता कुठे होता? त्याचं घर, त्याचं ठिकाण..काहीच माहीत नव्हतं..

तेव्हाच हर्षदा ची आई घरी आली.. त्यांचं कुटुंब दुसऱ्या शहरात स्थायिक होणार होतं, शेवटचं भेटायला म्हणून त्या आल्या. हर्षदा एकमेव त्यांच्या प्रेमाची साक्षीदार होती, आता तीही जाणार..मोनिका एकटी पडली.ना मंगेश कुठे सापडत नव्हता, ना हर्षदा ची मदत घेता येणार होती. शेवटी जे समोर आलं ते स्वीकारण्याशिवाय तिला गत्यंतर नव्हतं. जे समोर आलं ते ती निमूटपणे स्वीकारत गेली, मनात एक सल ठेऊन..कायमची…

जसजसा काळ सरकत गेला तसतशी दुःखाची किनार अस्पष्ट होत गेली, पण पुसली मात्र गेली नाही..श्रीधर जीवापाड प्रेम करत होता, कसलीही कमी जाणवू देत नव्हता..

पण आज अचानक असं मंगेश च येणं? तिला वाटलं जाब विचारला मंगेश ला…कुठे गेला होतास म्हणून.. सांगावं त्याला मन मोकळं करून, की कसा एकेक दिवस त्याच्या आठवणीत आणि वाट पाहण्यात घालवला..सांगावी त्याला मनाची घालमेल…

फोनवर बोलून झालं आणि श्रीधर बाहेर आला..
