 सायंकाळी 5 च्या आसपास जवळच्या मंदिरात पन्नाशीतल्या बायका एकत्र जमायच्या, प्रत्येकीच्या चेहऱ्यावर आयुष्यातील कडू गोड अनुभवांच्या सुरकुत्या होत्या. या वयात शरीराला लागलेलं आजारपण, दुखणं त्यांच्या हालचालींवरून दिसून येतच होतं. सर्व समवयस्क असल्याने त्यांचे गप्पांचे विषय अगदी ठरलेले असायचे. नातीगोती, नातेवाईकांचे गाऱ्हाणे, कुणी कुणासाठी किती केलं, कुणी किंमत ठेवली कुणी नाही ठेवली, मुलांनी किती प्रगती केली आणि सर्वात लाडका विषय म्हणजे “आमची सुनबाई” 

ऐंशी नव्वदीतला काळ म्हणजे स्त्रियांसाठी खूप मोठा सामाजिक स्थित्यंतराचा होता, म्हणजे आधीच्या पिढीत केवळ लग्न करून संसार सांभाळणं या विचारांना फाटा देत या पिढीतल्या मुली चांगलं शिकून नोकरी करण्याला प्राधान्य देऊ लागल्या, साहजिकच संसार अन घरातली कामं दुय्यम वाटू लागली. आणि याच दशकातील मुली जेव्हा 60-70व्या दशकातल्या स्त्रियांच्या हाताखाली सून बनून गेल्या तेव्हा दोघींचा आयुष्याकडे बघण्याचा दृष्टिकोन अगदी वेगवेगळा होऊन बसला. 

त्याही पूर्वी सासू आपला संसार, मूल अन चूल बघे, आलेल्या सुनेचंही तेच उद्दिष्ट असे त्यामुळे ताळमेळ बसे, पण या नंतरच्या पिढीला एकमेकांशी जमवून घेणं अवघड झालं, आणि त्यानेच निर्माण झालेली ईर्षा, द्वेष, आरोप  प्रत्यारोप यात कित्येक संसार भरडले गेले. सुनांची चुगली हा त्या मंदिरात बसलेल्या बायकांचा आवडता विषय. त्यांचं असंच बोलणं चालू असताना त्यांच्याच वयाची एक स्त्री छानपैकी पंजाबी ड्रेस घालून अन डोळ्यावर गॉगल मिरवत त्यांच्या जवळ आली..

“जागृत महादेव मंदिर हेच ना??”

“हो हेच, कुठे जायचे आहे तुम्हाला?”

“आम्ही नवीनच राहायला आलोय शेजारच्या बिल्डिंग मध्ये..या मंदिरा बद्दल बरंच ऐकलेलं, म्हटलं एकदा जाऊन येऊ..”

“कुटुंबात कोण कोण असतं मग?”

“मुलगा, सून, नातू अन माझे मिस्टर..असे आम्ही 5 जण..”

किरकोळ चौकशी होताच ती स्त्री घाईघाईत म्हणाली,

“अरेच्या, लक्षातच नाही बघा…आज ड्रायव्हिंग क्लासला जायचं होतं, सुनबाई वाट बघत असेल..चला येते मी..”

ती स्त्री निघून गेली पण या घोळक्याला चघळायला विषय मिळाला..

दुसऱ्या दिवशी पुन्हा ती स्त्री तिकडे आली, चेहऱ्यावर एक विलक्षण आनंद दिसत होता. नेहमीप्रमाणे दर्शन घेतलं आणि घाईने जायला निघाल्या.. तोच सुनबाईचा फोन आला..

“आई आज ड्रायव्हिंग क्लास बंद आहे, त्यांचा जस्ट फोन आलेला..”

“अय्या हो का..बरं..मी बसते मंदिरात जरावेळ…”

असं म्हणत त्या स्त्री ने पर्स मधून हेडफोन काढले आणि कानाला लावले, ती एकटीच एका बाजूला बसून गाणे ऐकत आनंद घेत होती. इकडे बायकांचा घोळकाही जमलेला..त्यांना या स्त्री बद्दल फार कुतूहल निर्माण झालेलं.. एकीने खूण करून त्या स्त्रीला जवळ बोलावलं..सुनेबद्दल उकसवून आपल्याच कॅटेगरीत त्या स्त्रीला सामील करायचं अशी सुप्त ईच्छा त्यांच्या मनात होती. 

“तुम्ही नवीनच आला आहात, म्हटलं जरा ओळख करून घेऊ…एकट्याच बसला होता तुम्ही..”

“नमस्कार, मी मंदाकिनी…”

“तुम्हाला बघतो आम्ही रोज… फार घाईत असता..काय काम असतं इतकं?? सुनबाई नोकरी करते का??”

“हो, नोकरी करते ती..”

“तरीच म्हटलं, आता या वयात सुनेच्या नोकरीसाठी घर सांभाळायचं म्हणजे…मी तर माझ्या सुनेला स्पष्ट सांगितलं, मला आता कामं जमनार नाहीत, तुलाच सगळं पाहावं लागेल…मग उगाच नोकरी अन घर अशी दमछाक नको म्हणून गपगुमान बसली ती घरीच…” चांगलीच गोची केली सुनेची असा त्यांचा दडलेला अर्थ होता. 

“आता यांना आवडत असेल आणि होत असतील घरातली कामं तर आपण कशाला बोलायचं..”

घोळका मंदाकिनीला बोलण्याबदल उकसवत होत्या, हे ऐकून तीही गाऱ्हाणे सुरू करेल असं त्यांना वाटलं..

मंदाकिनीच्या लक्षात न येण्याइतकी ती मंद नव्हती, तिनेही बोलायला सुरुवात केली..

“अहो नाही, तसं काही नाही…मी घरातली कामं करत नाही..”

“मग सुनबाई आवरून जाते इतकं सगळं?”

“नाही..”

“मग सगळ्या कामांना नोकर असतील..”

“नाही…अहो ऐकून तरी घ्या पूर्ण… घरातली सर्व कामं आम्ही सर्व मिळून करणं..आता या वयात बाकीची कामं जमत नसली तरी चहाचा कप आत नेऊन ठेवणं, स्वतः जाऊन पाणी पिणं, आपापले कपडे वाळत घालणं, भाजीपाला निवडणं हे जमतच की…प्रत्येकजण आपापलं काम करतं.. कुना एकीवर आमचं अडून राहत नाही, सुनेला मीच लावलं नोकरीला, कारण आर्थिक परावलंबित्व आपल्या पिढीने पाहिलं आहे. आमच्या कुटुंबात कधीच वाद होत नाहीत, कारण ज्या गोष्टींमुळे वाद होतात ती आम्ही हद्दपार केलीय…म्हणजे सुनेच्या कामात ढवळाढवळ करणं मला जमत नाही, मुलगा कुणाचं ऐकतो यावरून वाद होत नाही कारण तो कुणाचं काही ऐकून मग तसा वागेल असे संस्कार आम्हीच त्याला दिले नाहीत, त्याला जे योग्य वाटतं तसं तो करतो..दोघांच्या संसारात आम्ही नाक खुपसत नाही, जिथे गरज वाटली तिथे सल्ला फक्त देतो…हे असंच झालं पाहिजे, तसंच झालं पाहिजे हा हट्ट नसतो आणि मी तुझ्या वयाची असताना काय काय केलेलं हे गिरवायलाही मला आवडलं नाही, कारण आपणही आपल्या सासूइतकं केलेलं नसतंच कधी.. स्वयंपाक आम्ही सर्व मिळून करतो, त्यामुळे काही कमी जास्त झालं की जबाबदारी सर्वजण घेतो, मी स्वतःला या वयात पूर्ण व्यस्त ठेवलं आहे..काय असतं ना..वय झालं, काही होत नाही आता ही ढाल पुढे करून आपण स्वतःचं जास्त नुकसान करून घेतो..जे जमत नाही ते करू नका पण जे जमतंय ते तर करूच शकतो ना? नाहीतर मग डोकं रिकामं राहतं अन चुगली करणारे सैतान त्यात येऊन बसतात… आणि अशी रिकामी डोकं एकत्र आली की निरर्थक घुसमटीशिवाय काहीही निष्पन्न होत नाही…अरे, मी बोलत काय बसले, आज एक मराठी नाटक आलंय, प्रशांत दामले येणारेत..उशीर झाला मला जायला हवं..”

मंदाकिनी निघून गेली, आपल्याला सणसणीत चपराक केव्हा मारली गेली हे त्या घोळक्याला कळलंच नाही…
