शुभदाला हे समजतं की पुस्तकाची उकल करणारी ती एकटी नव्हती, अजून कुणीतरी घराण्यात होऊन गेलेलं जिने याचा छडा लावायचा प्रयत्न केलेला. पुस्तकाला समजण्यासोबतच आधी आपल्या घराण्याची वंशावळ समजून घेणं तिला महत्वाचं वाटलं. दिगंबरपंत त्यांच्या आजी इतपत सांगू शकत होते पण त्या आधी कोण होतं? ती दिव्य स्त्री कोण होती जिने पुस्तक लिहिलेलं??
शुभदा आणि वीणा दोघीजणी मिळून यावर तोडगा काढतात. त्यांच्या ओळखीतले भाट, राजशेखर.. यांना जाऊन भेटतात. त्यांनी पूर्ण वंशावळ सांगितली..अगदी राजस्थान मध्ये असलेले त्यांचे वंशजही सांगितले..ते पुढीलप्रमाणे..
“माझ्याकडे 1853 सालापासून नोंद आहे, म्हणजे बघा..जगदीशपंत यांचा जन्म 1853 चा, त्यांच्या विसाव्या वर्षी त्यांना 1873 मध्ये मुलगा झाला तो पांडुरंग.. पांडुरंग ची बायको मीरा..त्यांना 3 मुली अन 1 मुलगा, मुलगा लीलाधर,जन्म 1892 मधला.. त्याची बायको यमुनाबाई, लीलाधर ला 2 मुलं.. मोठा मुरलीधर.1915 सालातला…त्याची बायको सूनयना.. त्यांना 4 मुलं, मोठा जगन्नाथ 1940 मधला… जगन्नाथ म्हणजे दिगंबरपंतांचे वडील..आणि दिगंबरपंतांचा जन्म 1960 चा..

“म्हणजे तो काळ जगदीशपंतांचा..”
“1888, म्हणजे जगदीश पंतांचा जन्म 1853 चा, वयाच्या एकोणिसाव्या वर्षी त्यांना मुलगा झाला, म्हणजे 1872 मध्ये..त्यांचं लग्न 1871 मध्ये झालं असावं, आणि 1888 मध्ये त्यांची मुलं 18-20 वर्षाची असतील..”
“बरोबर..त्याच काळात हे पुस्तक लिहिले गेले आहे..त्या स्त्रीची मुलं तरुण होती…अश्या काळात तिने हे सगळं लिहिलं होतं..सापडली, ती दिव्य स्त्री सापडली… हीच ती..”
“राजशेखर गुरुजी…जगदीशपंतांच्या बायकोचं नाव सांगा..”
राजशेखर त्यांच्या रजिस्टर मध्ये नाव वाचण्याचा प्रयत्न करतात पण त्यांना काही केल्या ते नीट दिसेना..
“काय झालं गुरुजी??”
“हे नाव बघा, किती अस्पष्ट आहे..असं वाटतंय की नाव लिहिताना झटापट झाली असावी..”
“असू शकतं, त्या काळात स्त्रियांना एक तर समोर येणं मुश्कील होतं, त्यात बायकोचं नाव विचारून लिहिणं म्हणजे… “
“पण तरीही इथे तोडकं मोडकं लिहिलं गेलंय.. बघा तुम्हाला वाचता येतंय का??”
शुभदा ते वाचायला घेते, वाचून ती एकदम स्तब्ध होते, तिच्या डोळ्यात टचकन पाणी येतं..
“शुभदा काय झालं??”
“अगं हे अक्षर, मोडी लिपीचा अभ्यास अन पुस्तकांचं भाषांतर करून चांगलंच परिचित झालंय माझं..”
“काय नाव आहे त्यांचं??”
“दुर्गावती देवी..”
शुभदाला क्षणभर असं वाटलं की ती स्वतःचच नाव सांगतेय..
“दुर्गावती देवी.. नावातच किती वजन आहे…हो ना??”
“खरंच, कमीत कमी नावापर्यंत पोहोचलो आपण…आता पुस्तकाचा अभ्यास..”
शुभदा पुन्हा एकदा कामाला लागते. कॉलेजमधून आणलेले ते पेपर ती वाचायला घेते. पहिले 20 पान अनुवादित असतात. ते ती वाचायला घेते..
“पांडुरंग कधी मोठा झाला समजलंच नाही, लहानपणी नुसता माई माई म्हणून चिटकून असायचा..आता मात्र स्वतःच्या आईलाच कुणी बाहेरचं आलं की आत जायला सांगतो..मुलं मोठी झाली..त्याच्या आईवर नियंत्रण करू पाहतोय.. त्याला म्हणा नियंत्रित करायचंच असेल तर त्या इंग्रजांना कर..राज्य करताय आपल्यावर…त्याला कितीदा सांगायचा प्रयत्न केला मी..अरे जा, त्या रानडेंच्या सभेला जा..टिळकांना सामील हो नाहीतर गांधीच्या चळवळीत तरी जा..पण नाही, याला फक्त आपलं घर अन आपली सोय . देशाबद्दल आपलं कर्तव्य असावं की नाही माणसाचं?? काय करणार, तोंड कुठेय मला..पुरुषी सत्ता..पण माझ्या लेकरांनो, म्हणजेच… जर माझे हे शब्द पुढे पोहोचलेच..तर कायम लक्षात असुद्या.. घरातल्या स्त्रीला कधीही दुखवू नका..आलेल्या सुनेला मान द्या, स्वातंत्र्य द्या…हा माझा हुकूम समजा…”
रानडे, टिळक, गांधी याच शतकातले, त्यांचा उल्लेख बरोबर दुर्गावतीच्या लिखाणात झाला होता. स्त्रियांना मिळणारी दुय्यम वागणूक दुर्गावतीला सलतच होती..पण हाच वारसा आपल्या पिढीने चालवू नये म्हणून दुर्गावती मनापासून प्रयत्न करत होती.
“जो कुणी माझं हे वाचत असेल त्याला प्रश्न पडला असेल ना की मला लिहिता वाचता कसं येतंय? माझे वडील शिक्षक होते, घरी शिकवण्याही घ्यायचे. इंग्रजांनी पूर्ण अभ्यासक्रम बदलून टाकला होता, वेद, पुराण यांचं शिक्षण हद्दपार केलं होतं. पण वडिलांना हे अजिबात पटत नव्हतं, त्यामुळे खाजगी शिकवणीत आबा हेही शिकवत असायचे. आबा शिकवत असताना मी गपचूप मागून पाटी पेन्सिल घेऊन बसायचे अन आबांची शिकवणी अभ्यासायची..कुणाला समजू द्यायचं कामच नव्हतं. आई तर हात धुवून लग्नासाठी मागे लागलेली. घरातली कामं शिकवत शिकवत तिच्या नाकी नऊ आलेले..मीही सगळी कामं शिकून घेतली पण मुलांप्रमाणे मलाही शिक्षण हवं असं कोणत्या तोंडाने सांगणार मी? मागे एकदा मी सहज विषय काढला तेव्हा आबा खूप रागावले. धर्म भ्रष्ट करायला निघालीये म्हणून आरोप लावले, पण मी काही जिद्द सोडली नव्हती. म्हणूनच आज थोडंफार लिहता वाचता येत आहे. पण ही गोष्ट कुणालाही माहीत नाही, पद्मिनी सोडून…पद्मिनी माझी बालमैत्रीण. आम्ही एकत्रच वाढलो, नशिबाने लग्नही एकाच गावात झालं आणि आम्ही शेजारीणी बनलो. कुटुंबाचं करताना, संसाराचे चटके अनुभवताना एकमेकांकडे आम्ही मन मोकळं करत असू…पद्मिनी दुसऱ्या समाजाची.. जगाच्या भाषेत बोलायचं झालं तर खालच्या जातीतली.. पण मैत्रीत कसली आलीय जातपात??”
जवळपास 10 पानं वाचून झाली, शुभदा आता दुर्गावतीला बऱ्यापैकी ओळखू लागली, या स्त्रीचं जीवन कसं होतं, किती खडतर प्रवास होता तिचा हे समजू लागलं. त्यात पुढे लिहिलं होतं..
“आम्ही सर्व जावा मसाला कांडायला जमलो आहोत, खरं तर ही एक स्पर्धाच असते, मोठमोठ्या दगडी खलबत्त्यात जड अश्या मुसळीने लाल मिरच्या कांडायच्या, आम्हा जावा जावात स्पर्धा असते, कोण जास्त मिरच्या कांडतय याची.. कारण सासू समोर असते अन प्रत्येकीला आपली छाप पाडायची असते. मग सकाळी सकाळी चांगली न्याहारी करून अन पेलाभर हळदीचं दूध पिऊन आम्ही सर्वजणी एकत्र येतो अन कामाला लागतो. सासू समोर बसून प्रत्येकीला मिरच्या वाटून देत असे, एकीची संपली की दुसरीला.. मग सासूच्या बरोबर लक्षात येई की कोणी किती काम केलंय याची. पण दरवेळी नेहमी मीच जिंकते. एक गुपित आहे त्याचं. आबांनी मुलांना सूर्यनमस्कार शिकवले होते, मीही ते शिकून घेतले आणि पहाटे लवकर उठून स्वयंपाकघरात जाऊन करत होते, सर्वजण तेव्हा झोपलेले असत. ही कसरत करून पूर्ण दिवस असा छान जायचा ना. अन त्यामुळेच ताकद आली खरं मला, मी अशी किडकिडीत, पण कामं मात्र चुटकीसरशी होत असायची माझी..”
शुभदाला एकेक पान वाचून खूप गम्मत वाटू लागलेली. त्या काळात स्त्रियांमध्ये स्पर्धा कसली? तर कोण जास्त मिरच्या कांडून बारीक करतं याची. आज प्रत्येक बाईला व्यायाम सांगितला जातो तरी बायका आळशीपणा करतात, अन तेव्हा? बायकांना असं व्यायाम करताना कुणी पाहिलं तर काय होईल? या भीतीने दुर्गावती कशी लपूनछपून व्यायाम करायची..आणि समोर सासूबाईंना जज म्हणून ठेवलेलं.. खरंच, गम्मत होती त्या काळातही..
दारावरची बेल वाजली, शुभदाने ऑनलाइन काही वस्तू मागवल्या होत्या, बहुतेक त्याच असतील म्हणून ती स्वतः दार उघडायला गेली. पण दारात दुसरंच कुणीतरी होतं..

“काळजी घ्यावी लागेल रश्मी..कारण हीच टेस्ट जर हातातून गेली तर सगळी मेहनत वाया जाईल..भेटू आपण उद्या, मी येतो.”
शुभदा सगळं बघत असते, रश्मी मटकन सोफ्यावर बसून घेते अन तोंडावर हात ठेवून काळजीत पडते..
“रश्मी, होईल सगळं नीट..”
“शुभदा कसं गं… इतकं सगळं करूनही जर फिटनेस मध्ये मी बसत नाही तर…तर काय होईल माझं??”
शुभदा विचार करते..
“रश्मी, एक सुचवू??”
“काय…”
“हे बघ, म्हणजे मला खेळाबद्दल आणि फिटनेस बद्दल फारसं काही माहिती नाही पण एक व्यायाम अजून ऍड कर तुझ्या रुटीन मध्ये…तुला फायदा होईल बघ..”
“कुठला??”
“सूर्यनमस्कार..”

“हो..आपले पूर्वज करायचे, आजही केले जातात पण त्याचे फायदे फार कमी लोकांना माहितीये..पूर्वजांनी आपल्यासाठी सांगून ठेवलंय सगळं…त्यांची एखादी गोष्ट ऐकायला काय हरकत आहे??”
“तू म्हणत असशील तर. करूया हेही…”
“नक्की?? उद्यापासून मीही तुला जॉईन…”

दुर्गावतीने हे सगळं रश्मीसाठीच राखून ठेवलंय की काय असं शुभदाला वाटू लागतं अन स्वतःशीच हसू येतं..ती पुन्हा त्या लिखानाकडे वळते, अनुवादित केलेलं सगळं संपतं.. आता पुन्हा देव्हाऱ्यात जाऊन ते पुस्तक आणावं लागणार होतं आणि पुढचा भाग वाचवा लागणार होता. शुभदाने यावेळी मोठ्या सावधगिरीने ते पुस्तक पुन्हा स्वतःकडे आणलं, ती पानं चाळू लागली…
“20 पानांचा अनुवाद या पेपर्स वर आहे, आता पुढचं पुस्तकात पाहावं लागेल…बघू तर जरा…हे काय?? पुढे फक्त 5 पानं?? पुस्तक इथेच संपतं?? कसं शक्य आहे??”
शुभदा शेवटची पानं वाचायला घेते..शेवटच्या पानात अपूर्ण संदर्भ असतो..
“म्हणजे?? हा पुस्तकाचा अर्धाच भाग आहे..अर्धं पुस्तक कुठेय??”
शुभदा नीट बघते तेव्हा तिच्या लक्षात येतं, पुस्तका सोबत झटापट झालेली असावी..अर्धा भाग इथे आपण सांभाळलाय, पण अर्धा भाग?? कुणाकडे असेल?? तो जपून ठेवला गेला असेल?? कुठे मिळवावा लागेल आता तो??
