रावसाहेब दिगंबरपंतांना फोन करून पुढची बोलणी करायला आमंत्रण देतात. दिगंबरपंतांना खूप आनंद होतो. सुमन शुभदाच्या कानावर हे सगळं घालते. शुभदा हे ऐकून चिडते..
“मला न सांगता तुम्ही परस्पर ठरवलं तरी कसं? आणि असुदेत ते कितीही श्रीमंत.. माझं काही मत आहे की नाही??”
“अगं तू मुलगा बघ, मग ठरव..आम्ही काही जबरदस्ती करणार नाहीये..”
“तरी पण..”
“फक्त पाहायला येणारेत ते..तुझं थोडी लगेच लग्न लावून देणार आहे आम्ही??”
“आई तुला एक गोष्ट सांगायची होती, पण..”
आईच्या काळजाचा ठोकाच चुकला…
“मला एक मुलगा आवडतो…पण..”
“बस्स शुभदा…माझ्यापुढे बोललीस, पण घराण्याला गालबोट लागेल असं काही पाऊल उचलू नकोस..ही घे साडी, संध्याकाळी तयार रहा..”
असं म्हणत सुमन निघून जाते. शुभदा ठरवते, पाहुण्यांना सगळं खरं खरं सांगणार…शुभदा निर्भीड होती, सत्याची कास धरणारी होती त्यामुळे सत्य लपवून ठेवणं तिला योग्य वाटत नव्हतं.
शुभदा संध्याकाळी साडी नेसून तयार झाली. दिगंबरपंत, मेघना, परशुराम आणि ऋग्वेद घरी आले. जुजबी बोलणं झाल्यावर मुलीला समोर आणा म्हणत शुभदाला बोलावण्यात आलं. शुभदा मान खाली घालून आली. केव्हा एकदाचं सत्य सांगून टाकते असं तिला झालं. ऋग्वेदला मात्र आनंदाचा धक्काच बसतो..जिच्यावर प्रेम केलं तिलाच पाहायला तो आलेला. पण शुभदाने अजून मान वर करून पाहिलं नव्हतं. ऋग्वेद ती आपल्याकडे बघण्याची वाट बघत असतो पण तिच्या मनात असलेला ऋग्वेद कुठल्याही परक्या पुरुषाकडे बघायची परवानगी तिला देत नव्हता.
इकडे माणसांचं बोलणं चालू होतं, ऋग्वेद शुभदाकडे चोरुन बघत मनोमन आनंदी होत होता, अखेर शुभदाने सगळं बळ एकटवलं आणि मान वर करून म्हणायला लागली..
“माफ करा पण…”
वर बघताच ऋग्वेद तिला दिसला..म्हणजे?? म्हणजे याचंच स्थळ आलंय की काय आपल्याला? क्षणभर शुभदाला काहीच सुचेना, ती ऋग्वेद कडे बघतच राहिली, ऋग्वेद तिच्याकडे बघून हसत होता.
“काय म्हणत होतीस मुली? का माफ करा??”
दिगंबरपंतांच्या या प्रश्नाने ती भानावर आली,
“माफ? माफ करा..हो…म्हणजे, माफ करा मधेच बोलतेय, पण चहा घेतला नाही तुम्ही, गार होतोय..”
“हा हा…खरंच की गं… घेतो..आणि तुही बस समोर, आमच्यासमोर घे चहा..”
“मी??”
“अगं आमच्याकडे रितच आहे..मुलीने समोर उभं राहून बोलायचं नाही..आमच्या बैठकीत आमच्याच बाजूला बसुन समान चर्चा करायची..”
सुमनला तर भीतीच वाटत होती, ही मुलगी खरं सांगतेय की काय..पण तिच्याही जीवात जीव आला. मुला मुलीला बोलायला बाहेर पाठवण्यात आलं. ऋग्वेद आणि शुभदा बाहेर आले. समोरासमोर येताच दोघांना हसू आवरेना..
“अरे काय हे, मला आधी सांगायचं ना..”
“मला तरी कुठे माहीत होतं..बरं तुला काही प्रश्न विचारायचे असतील तर विचार..”
“होना..बरेच प्रश्न विचारायचे आहेत..आपण एकमेकांना ओळखत नाही ना..”
दोघांचं बोलणं बाहेर सुरू असतं, आत दिगंबरपंत म्हणतात.
“आमच्या ऋग्वेदला शुभदा आधीपासूनच आवडत होती, मी माहिती काढल्यावर शुभदाच्या कॉलेजला कामात काम म्हणून आलो, आणि त्याची आणि माझी पसंत सारखीच निघाली..काय योगायोग हा..”
“म्हणजे?? शुभदा आणि ऋग्वेद आधीपासूनच??”
“हो सुमनताई…”
सुमनच्या मनावरचं मोठं ओझं कमी झालं..
पाहुणे गेल्यावर सुमन शुभदाच्या खोलीत आली,
“शुभदा.. मला माफ कर, उगाच मी तुझं लग्न अनोळखी मुलासोबत लावून देणार होती..पण त्यांना नकार देऊ आपण..तू तुला आवडत असलेल्या मुलाशीच लग्न कर..”
“नको आई.. मला पटलं, आई वडिलांच्या शब्दाबाहेर जाण्यात काही अर्थ नाही..मी करेन त्या मुलाशीच लग्न..”
“लबाड कुठली…बस कर नाटकं.. मला माहितीये हा तोच मुलगा आहे..”
शुभदा जीभ चावत म्हणते,
“तुला कसं माहीत??”
सुमन तिला सगळी हकीकत सांगते, दिगंबरपंतांचं तिला फार कौतुक वाटतं. संसाराची स्वप्न आता ती रंगवू लागते. शुभदाचं शिक्षण अजून बाकी असतं. तिने साहित्य विषय घेतला होता आणि पुढे जाऊन त्यातच तिला Phd करायची होती. तिने तसं आपल्या सासरी सांगितलं होतच.
ऋग्वेद आणि शुभदाचं थाटामाटात लग्न होतं.
लग्नात रुद्रशंकर गुरुजी येतात,त्यांच्याकडे असलेली पेटी ते शुभदाला सुपूर्द करतात. सर्वांना प्रश्न पडतो की काय असेल नेमकं यात? गुरुजी एवढंच सांगतात..
“रत्नपारखी आणि नारायनकर कुटुंबाच्या पुर्वजांचा खजिना आहे यात…त्याचा उलगडा करण्याचं दिव्य काम तुला करायचं आहे…आमच्या पिढीला ही जबाबदारी दिली गेली होती आणि आज दोन्ही घराणे एक झाल्यावर आम्ही जबाबदारीतून मुक्त झालो..”
ते ऐकताच रेखा पुढे येते..कसला खजिना?? कसला उलगडा??
“सगळं विधिलिखित आहे…सगळं समोर येईलच, थोडा धीर धरा..”
शुभदा माप ओलांडून घरी येते. घरी आल्यावर नववधुचं स्वागत करण्याची रत्नपारखी घराण्याची वेगळी रीत होती. सत्यनारायणाची पूजा नाववधूच्या खोलीत केली जाई..आणि त्या खोलीला विशेष पद्धतीने तयार केलं जाई. येणाऱ्या मुलीला आपलं कर्तृत्व सिद्ध करण्यासाठी अनुकूल असं वातावरण तयार केलं जायचं, तिला तिचं ध्येय पूर्ण करताना जे जे काही लागेल त्या सर्व वस्तू तिला भेट दिल्या जायच्या. शुभदाला तिची खोली दाखवण्यात आली..तिच्या सासूबाई, जानकीबाई तिला खोली दाखवू लागल्या..
“हे बघ बाळा..ही तुझी खोली…”
“म्हणजे माझी आणि ऋग्वेद ची ना??”
“नाही, ही फक्त तुझी…तुमच्या दोघांची खोली बाजूला आहे..बायको म्हणून नवऱ्याच्या सर्व गोष्टीत तुझा सहभाग असला तरी तुझं स्वतःचं स्वतंत्र अस्तित्व टिकवून ठेवता आलं पाहिजे. जसं त्या खोलीत तुमचा संसार फुलणार आहे तसाच या खोलीत तुला तुझं अस्तित्व फुलवायचं आहे..”
शुभदाला हे ऐकून मनस्वी आनंद होतो, ती खोली निरखून बघते, तिला अभ्यासाला छानसा टेबल, गोल फिरणारी खुर्ची, शेजारी एक प्रशस्त कपाट ज्यात वाचनालयात असलेली सगळी पुस्तकं अगदी चार पावलांच्या अंतरावर, वह्या, पुस्तकं…शुभदा हे सगळं बघून भारावून जाते..खोलीतच सत्यनारायणाची पूजा मांडलेली ती बघते..जानकीबाई सांगतात..
“हे बघ, जिथे लक्ष्मी असते तिथेच नारायण असतो…तू फक्त लक्ष्मी नावाला असू नकोस, तर तुझ्या कर्तृत्वाने तुला सोन्यासारखी झळाळी येऊ दे. दागदागिने, हिरे, मोती यापेक्षा आलेल्या सूनेचं कर्तृत्व हेच आपल्या घराण्यात श्रीमंतीत मोजतात. आता ही श्रीमंती तुला टिकवायची आहे अन वाढवायची आहे..”
शुभदाला ते ऐकून अक्षरशः डोळ्यात पाणी येतं. लग्नानंतर मुलीचं शिक्षण, नोकरी बंद होताना तिने ऐकलं होतं, पण इथे तर….उगाच नाही रत्नपारखी घराण्यात मुलगी देण्यासाठी पालक चढाओढ करत..
जानकीबाई काशीबाईला आवाज देतात..
“हे बघ, या काशी आजी…तुझा चहा, नाष्टा, जेवण, झाडू, लादी, कपडे सगळं काम ह्या बघतील.. तुला काय हवं नको ते यांना सांगायचं..”
नंतर तिला देवघर दाखवण्यात येतं.. रेखाही मागोमाग येते..देवघरात जाऊन शुभदा सर्व देवांना नमस्कार करते..देव्हाऱ्यात लाल कपड्यात ठेवलेल्या त्या वस्तूचं तेज आज का कोण जाणे पण खूप उठून दिसत होतं. त्या वस्तूवर बांधलेला लाल कपडा हवेने उघडू पाहायला लागला. हे दृश्य सर्वांसाठी अचंबित करणारं होतं..
“काशीबाई, खिडक्या लावून घ्या की..आज हवा दिसतेय चांगली..”
काशीबाई खिडक्या बंद करायला जातात, पण खिडक्या तर आधीच बंद असतात..मग तो कपडा उघडू कसा पाहत होता??
शुभदा त्या वस्तूकडे एकटक बघते, अन विचारते..
“हे काय आहे??”
जानकीबाई काही सांगायच्या आत रेखा पुढे येऊन म्हणते..
“आपल्या पूर्वजांनी ते आपल्यासाठी दिलेलं आहे..त्याची रोज पूजा करायची..”
“हो पण त्यात काहीतरी असेलच ना, फक्त पूजा करायची?? कुणी उघडून पाहिलेलं नाही का??”
आजवर हा प्रश्न घरातील कुठल्याही सुनेने विचारला नव्हता, पण शुभदा मात्र त्याची इथंभुत माहिती काढण्याच्या मागेच लागली..
