शास्त्रीय संगीताच्या कार्यक्रमात स्वरांग चा आलाप असा काही रंगात आलेला की श्रोतावर्ग अगदी मंत्रमुग्ध होऊन गेलेला…स्वरांग च्या आवाजाने संपूर्ण वातावरणच अगदी दैवी बनून गेलं होतं…
“थांबवा….”
पंडित श्यामप्रसाद शास्त्री एकदम उठून उभे राहिले आणि सर्वत्र एक शांतता पसरली…. आपल्याच सुरात मग्न झालेला स्वरांग एकदम शांत झाला आणि घाबरला…पंडितजींनी गायन असं अचानक का थांबवलं?? सभेत नीरव शांतता पसरली…पंडितजी तिथून निघून गेले आणि हॉल च्या ऑफिस मध्ये जाऊन बसले..त्यांचं पूर्ण अंग थरथरत होतं.. स्वरांग च्या सुरांनी त्यांना भयभीत केलं होतं… वयोमानाने तो त्रास अजून जाणवू लागलेला…त्यांच्या कानात काही शब्द घुमू लागले…
“लता आई होऊ शकत नाही…मग सोडून दे तिला…दुसरं लग्न कर..काहीही कर…मला आपल्या घरासाठी वंश हवा आहे…ते शक्य नाही..फक्त मुलासाठी मी तिला सोडू?…दत्तक घ्यायचं नाव काढायचं नाही..आपला स्वर, सूर, लय, ताल ही आपल्या घराण्याला मिळालेली दैवी देणगी आहे… आणि ती आपल्याच रक्तातून पुढच्या पिढीत उतरणार आहे…मला वंश हवाय, मला वंश हवाय…”
“पंडितजी…पंडितजी…काय झालं? तुम्ही ठीक आहात ना??”
कार्यक्रमाचे मॅनेजर मिस्टर शहा हळूच त्यांच्याजवळ येऊन पाणी देत शांततेत विचारतात…

पंडितजी त्याचे जोडलेले हात बघतात, त्याची लांबसडक, कोरीव पेरं असलेली बोटं ते बघतात…उठून त्याच्याकडे निरखून बघतात…
“तू माझा वंशज आहेस..माझा नातू आहेस..”

“तुझे आई वडील..”
“मी अनुराधा जगताप आणि कल्पेश जगताप यांचा मुलगा…स्वरांग… आणि माझ्या माहितीप्रमाणे माझे आजोबा कधीच स्वर्गवासी झालेत..”

पंडितजी ही नावं घोळवत काहीतरी आठवायचा प्रयत्न करू लागतात…मॅनेजर परिस्थिती पाहत ड्राइव्हर ला बोलवून पंडितजींना तातडीने घरी पोचवतो आणि त्यांच्या मुलाला फोन करून सांगतो…
पंडितजी घरी येतात, त्यांचा मुलगा गीतेश त्यांना हात धरून आत नेतो..पंडितजी त्यांचा हात झटकतात…
“बाबा??”
“मला खरं सांग, तू चोरून लपून कुणाशी लग्न केलंय? तुला एक अपत्यही आहे??
“बाबा…काय बोलताय हे..”
गीतेश दोन पावलं मागे सरकत मोठ्याने ओरडतो…
“बाबा…तुम्हाला चांगलंच ठाऊक आहे…आयुष्यातील दोन तप मी संगीत साधनेसाठी घरापासून दूर राहिलो…संगीतात व्यत्यय नको म्हणून लग्न करुन मोहात अडकलो नाही…आणि तुम्ही चक्क असे आरोप लावताय माझ्यावर??”
पंडितजी त्याला ओढत वाद्यांकडे नेतात,
“घे यांची शपथ..”
“या सर्व वाद्यांची…संगीतात मिळवलेल्या ज्ञानाची…आणि सर्व सुरांची शपथ घेऊन सांगतो की मी आजन्म ब्रह्मचारी आहे…मी कधीही लग्न केलेलं नाही..”
पंडितजी मटकन खाली बसतात…कितीतरी वेळ शांतता असते..गीतेश ला आपल्यावर झालेल्या आरोपाचा खरं तर खूप राग येतो..पण बाबा असे का म्हणाले हे त्याला समजत नाही… अखेर तो स्वतःचा राग आवरून बाबांकडे जातो..
“बाबा…काय झालंय…असं का वाटलं तुम्हाला..”
“आपल्या संगीतातील ते आवर्तन…त्यातला तो सूर..”
“तो म्हणजे…”
“हो तोच…जो आपल्या पिढीगत पूर्वजांनी आपल्याला दैवी देणगीत दिला, आपल्या घराण्याखेरीज इतर कुणालाही ती देणगी मिळालेली नाहीये…”

“आजच्या कार्यक्रमात तो…स्वरांग..”

“हे शक्यही नाही…वहिनीला मूल होत नाही म्हणून बाबा दादाला दुसरं लग्न करायला सांगत होते, पण दादा ने शेवटपर्यंत न ऐकता घर सोडायचा निर्णय घेतला, दोघेही सिंगापूर ला रवाना होत असतानाच प्लेन क्रॅश मध्ये…”
गीतेश डोळे पुसतो…त्याची खात्री पटते की हा बाबांचा फक्त भास आहे आणि वयानुसार होणारे बदल…
