लांबच्या रस्त्याने प्रमिला गावी पोहोचली. गाव बरंच बदललं होतं. सुरवातीला फक्त आरोहिचे मामा मामी अन प्रमिलाचं घर होतं, आता तिथे अनेक घरं झाली होती. पारावर कायम दिसणारे वृद्ध चेहरे आता नजरेआड झाले होते. दुकानांचा चेहरामोहरा बदलला होता. अनेक नवीन दुकानं आली होती. तारण्या पोरांची लग्न होऊन त्यांची मुलं अंगणात खेळतांना दिसत होती.
ड्रायव्हरने घरासमोर गाडी उभी केली. प्रमिलाने दरवाजाचं कुलूप उघडलं आणि आत गेली. धुळीने घर माखलं होतं. प्रमिलाने नाकाला पदर लावला आणि घर न्याहाळू लागली. लहानपणी कष्टात आणि गरिबीत काढलेल्या दिवसांच्या आठवणी त्यात होत्या. एवढ्याश्या चुलीवर भावासाठी जेवण बनवणं, बाहेरच्या मोरीत कपडे धुणं, भांडी घासणं..सगळं तिला आठवलं. सर्व आठवणी मनात जागवून ती बाहेर आली आणि लक्ष आरोहीच्या मामा मामीच्या घराकडे गेलं. ते पडीक घर जणू त्याच्या गुपिताच्या साक्षीदाराकडे मोठ्या आशेने बघत होतं. त्या घरातून बाळाच्या आवाजाचा भास होऊ लागला, आरोहीच्या रडण्याचा आवाज येऊ लागला..प्रमिलाने कानावर गच्च हात ठेवले आणि लगबगीने गाडीत बसून ड्रायव्हरला गाडी काढण्यास सांगितली. जातांना पुन्हा दुसऱ्या कच्च्या रस्त्यानेच ते गेले.

काव्याने पेनड्राईव्ह देऊन आरोहीची आठवण मानवाच्या मनात पुन्हा एकदा ताजी केली होती. मानव एक चांगला व्यक्ती जरी असला तरी काव्याला त्याने त्याच्या भूतकाळाबद्दल अंधारात ठेवलं होतं. कारण सांगून काही उपयोगही नव्हता, आरोहीला मानवपासून तिच्या आई वडिलांनी इतकं दूर केलेलं की मानवने शर्थीचे प्रयत्न करूनही आरोहीला मिळवता आलं नव्हतं. त्याला टूर वर असतानाचे ते तीन दिवस आठवले.
आरोही आणि मानव मोठ्याश्या हॉटेलमध्ये पोहोचले होते. हॉटेलची सजावट आणि प्रशस्त जागा बघून आरोही हरखूनच गेलेली. आजवर इतक्या मोठ्या हॉटेलमध्ये आरोही कधी गेलेलीही नव्हती. तिला दडपण आलं, इथले एटिकेट्स, बड्या लोकांचं वागणं जमेल का म्हणून ती जरा गडबडली होती.
मानव आणि आरोहीला एका स्टाफने आपापल्या खोल्या दाखवल्या.
“आरोही, जा..तुझ्या रूम मध्ये जा, फ्रेश हो. अर्ध्या तासाने जेवण येईल. मी ते रूम मध्ये नाही मागवलं, खालीच जेवण करूया आपण.”
“चालेल सर..”
आरोही खोलीत जाते. अगदी चित्रपटात दाखवतात तशी सुंदर खोली होती. मोठा कॉट, त्यावर पांढरेशुभ्र बेडशीट, मखमली पडदे, फुलांचं इंटेरिअर, सुबक फर्निचर, खिडकीतून बाहेर दिसणारं मनमोहक दृश्य, कमालीची स्वछता आणि ऐसपैस जागा. आरोहीला असं वाटलं की कायमचं इथेच राहता आलं तर किती छान ना? इतकी ती हरखून गेलेली. बाथरुम मध्ये जाऊन ती फ्रेश होऊन आली. तोंडावर पाणी मारलं आणि पुन्हा खाली जायचं म्हणून थोडा मेकप चढवला. अर्धा तास होताच आरोही खाली गेली. तिथे मानव जेवणाच्या टेबलवर तिची वाटच बघत होता.
“आरोही, ऑल सेट?”
“येस सर, खूप छान आहे हॉटेल..”
“ऑर्डर दिली आहे, जेवण येईलच इतक्यात..”
शेजारीच काही श्रीमंत बापाची वाया गेलेली मुलं बसली होती. त्यांचं लक्ष आरोहीकडे होतं. कुणाचंही लक्ष वेधलं जाईल इतकी सुंदर ती होतीच, त्या मुलांचं असं बघणं तिला बैचेन करत होतं. तिने दुर्लक्ष केलं. हळूहळू मानवच्या ते लक्षात आलं. त्याने आरोहीला उठायला लावून त्या मुलांकडे पाठ करून बसायला लावलं.
“रेहने देते ना सहाब, क्या नजारा था..” एकजण हळूच बोलला, पण मानवला ऐकू गेलं.
मुलं टोमणा मारत हसायला लागली.
“अरे अभी ये भी नजारा देख, पीछे से भी क्या माल लग रही है ये आयटम..”
हे ऐकताच मानवचा राग अनावर झाला, त्याने उठून एकेकाची कॉलर धरली आणि एकेकाला मारून खाली लोळवलं. मॅनेजर ने येऊन त्या मुलांना बाहेर काढलं. आरोहीने मानवाचं हे रूप पहिल्यांदाच बघितलं, ती घाबरली होती.
“सॉरी सर, मी आले आणि तुम्हाला..”
“नो मिस आरोही…जनरली अश्या मुलांना मी इग्नोर करतो..पण प्रश्न तुझा होता..”
“प्रश्न माझा होता म्हणजे??”
“म्हणजे..काही नाही, हे बघा, जेवण आलं..जेऊन घ्या..”
दोघांनी पोटभर जेवण केलं. खाण्याचे इतके प्रकार आणि तेही इतके चविष्ट, आरोहिने पहिल्यांदाच चाखले होते. जेवण झालं आणि मानव आरोहीला म्हणाला..
“आता खोलीत जाऊन जरा आराम कर..संध्याकाळी 7 वाजता आपली मिटिंग असणार आहे एका मोठ्या बिझनेसमन सोबत..आपल्याला सॉस आणि जॅम ची नवीन फॅक्टरी सुरू करायची आहे, त्यासाठी लागणारा कच्चा माल रोहित पाटील म्हणून एका एजंट कडून मिळेल, त्याच्याशी व्यवहाराची बोलणी करायची आहे..तश्या त्याला भरपूर ऑफर्स आहेत पण स्पर्धेत आपल्याला त्याला जिंकायचं आहे..”
“आपण आपले पूर्ण प्रयत्न करू..”

आरोही खोलीत गेली. पोट भरलेलं असल्याने आणि AC ची थंड हवा सुरू असल्याने तिला जबरदस्त सुस्ती आली. छानपैकी उबदार चादर तिने ओढली, मोबाईल वर अलार्म लावला आणि मोबाईल चार्जिंग ला लावत ती झोपी गेली. इतकी शांत, सुखाची निद्रा ती पहिल्यांदाच अनुभवत होती.
झोप लागताच तिला स्वप्न पडलं. मानव तिला एका आलिशान बंगल्यात घेऊन गेलेला..बंगला राजमहालापेक्षा कमी नव्हता. मानव तिचा हात हातात घेतो, खाली गुडघ्यावर बसून तिला विचारतो..”या राजाची राणी होशील??” आरोही लाजते, मानव तिला खिशातून एक घड्याळ काढुन देतो, ते हातात घेताच त्याची बेल वाजते…आवाजाने आरोही खडबडून जागी होते.
आरोहीची सुस्ती काही उतरली नव्हती. कसंबसं स्वतःला सावरत ती उठली. खोलीबाहेरून आवाज आला,
“मॅडम चहा..”
“कम इन..”
वेटर चहा ठेऊन जातो.
“अजून 2 तास आहेत मिटिंग ला,काय करावं?”
