ऑफिस सुरू झालं, आरोही कामात लक्ष देऊ लागली. मानव आता आरोहीला बघायला रोज तिच्या डिपार्टमेंट मध्ये एक चक्कर मारत असे. एखादं काम काढून तिच्याशी बोलण्याचा प्रयत्न करे. आरोही जाणूनबुजून तोडकं बोले, मानवला तिला जास्त जवळ येऊ द्यायचं नव्हतं पण मनातून त्याच्याबद्दल असलेली ओढ काही कमी होत नव्हती.
मानव कामाच्या बाबतीत अगदी चोख होता. एकदा एका महत्त्वाच्या डील साठी त्याला नेमण्यात आलेलं. कंपनीचे नवीन उत्पादन मोठ्या कंपन्यांना सादर करायचे होते. त्यासाठी कंपनीचे प्रतिनिधी भेटायला येणार होते. मानवने सगळी तयारी केलेली. डील संदर्भात लागणारी कागदपत्रे एका फाईल मध्ये लावून ठेवलेली. आरोहीला मानवने बोलावून काही रिपोर्ट बनवून घेतले. कंपनी प्रतिनिधी मानवच्या ऑफिसमध्ये आले. मानवने त्यांचे स्वागत केले आणि त्याच्या प्रेझेन्टेशनला सुरवात केली. कंपनीचे रिपोर्ट्स दाखवायची वेळ आली तेव्हा मात्र नेमकी रिपोर्ट्स ची फाईल सापडेना. मानव घाबरला, इकडे तिकडे शोधू लागला.
बाहेर आरोही तिचं काम करत होती. आतला गोंधळ तिला शिपायाकडून समजला, तिच्याकडे रिपोर्ट्स चा बॅकप असल्याने तिने पटकन त्याच्या प्रिंट्स काढल्या आणि फाईलला जोडून केबिनमध्ये गेली.
“सर, ही घ्या फाईल.”
मानव बघतच राहिला. रिपोर्ट्सच्या पेपरचा स्पर्श उष्ण लागला म्हणजेच ह्या प्रिंट्स नुकत्याच काढून आणलेल्या दिसताय हे त्याला समजलं. आरोही परत गेली, मानवने त्याचं प्रेझेंटेशन पूर्ण केलं आणि ते यशस्वीही झालं. आनंदाच्या भरात मानवने पूर्ण ऑफिसला पार्टी देण्याचं ठरवलं. आरोहिचे विशेष आभार मानले. आरोहिने घरी आल्यावर आईला सगळं सांगितलं, आईने पार्टीसाठी नकार दिला. पण वडिलांना कसंतरी तयार केलं आणि आरोही पार्टीला गेली. आईला आवडलं तर नव्हतं पण बापलेकीच्या हट्टापुढे काहीही चाललं नाही.
पार्टीत आरोही छानपैकी तयार झाली. भडक लाल रंगाचा पंजाबी ड्रेस तिच्या गोऱ्या अंगावर खुलून दिसत होता. लांबसडक केसांची तिने सागरवेणी घातली आणि थोडासा मेकप करून ती पार्टीला गेली. जाताना आईने शाळा घेतलीच, “इतकं तयार कशाला व्हायला हवं? इतका मेकप कशाला वगैरे..” आईची समजूत घालून शेवटी आरोही पार्टी साठी बाहेर पडली.
एका शानदार हॉटेल मध्ये पार्टी आयोजित केली गेली होती. संध्याकाळची पार्टी असल्याने खूप छान रोषणाई करण्यात आलेली, समोर एक छानसा सजवलेला स्टेज होता. खाण्यासाठी कितीतरी प्रकार बनवले गेले होते. एका बाजूला छानसं संगीत सुरू होतं. एकंदरीत पार्टी लूक आलेला. थोड्याच वेळात मानव पार्टीत हजर झाला. निळ्या रंगाच्या चकाकणाऱ्या ब्लेझर मध्ये तो काय दिसत होता..आरोहीला पहिल्यांदा घरी आलेला मानव आठवला. तेव्हा मनात जशी चलबिचल झालेली तशीच आताही झाली. आरोही स्वप्नात रंगली, तिच्या डोळ्यासमोर आलं की आरोही आणि मानव हातात हात घालून स्टेजवर जाताय, सर्वांचं लक्ष दोघांकडे असतं, मानव माईक घेतो आणि त्याच्या व आरोहीच्या एंगेजमेंट ची घोषणा करतो.
टाळ्यांचा गजर होतो.. आरोही भानावर येते. ऑफिसमध्ये तिची नुकतीच झालेली मैत्रीण केतकी तिच्यासोबत असते. मानव स्टेजवर आल्याने टाळ्या वाजलेल्या असतात. आरोही स्वतःवरच हसू लागते. मानव बोलायला सुरुवात करतो..
“एका लहान खोलीतुन सुरवात केलेला हा व्यवसाय आता इतक्या उच्च पातळीवर पोहोचला, हे सगळं शक्य झालं तुमच्या कष्टाने. इथे काम करत असलेल्या प्रत्येकाचा मी ऋणी आहे. कालच आपल्या कंपनीला एक काम मिळालं आहे, आत्तापर्यंत मिळालेल्या कामात हे सर्वात मोठं आणि high budget काम आहे. यातून कंपनीला भरघोस नफा होणार आहे. या सर्वांचं श्रेय तुम्हा सर्वांना जातं..”
सर्वजण टाळ्या वाजवतात. मानव सर्वांना शांत करतो आणि पुढे म्हणतो,
“अजून एक महत्वाची घोषणा मी करणार आहे.”
आता ही घोषणा कोणती? सर्वजण विचारात पडतात.
“मिस. आरोही स्टेजवर या..”
आरोही एकदम दचकते, आजूबाजूला पाहते..सर्वजण तिच्याकडे बघत असतात.
“बापरे.. मघाशी पडलेलं स्वप्न खरं होतंय की काय? मानव मला प्रपोज तर करणार नाहीये ना?” एक ना अनेक प्रश्न तिच्या मनात येऊ लागले. केतकीने तिला इशारा केला अन ती कशीबशी स्टेजवर पोचली.
“मिस. आरोही..माफ करा तुम्हाला न विचारता मी घोषणा करतोय पण हे तुम्हाला नक्की आवडेल असं मला वाटतं..”
“बापरे..याने माझ्या मनातलं ओळखलं की काय? काय करणार आहे हा? याने जर लग्नाचीच मागणी घातली तर? याच्या नजरेत मला प्रेम दिसतंच होतं, पण घरी समजलं तर? आई काय म्हणेल?
एक तर आधीच ती पार्टीला पाठवणार नव्हती..”
“मिस. आरोही?? कसला विचार करताय??”
“मी..त..प..ते..न..म…”
मानव खळखळून हसतो.
” जास्त विचार करू नकोस, तर…मिस. आरोहीच्या तत्परतेमुळे हे प्रेझेन्टेशन यशस्वी झालं आणि त्यामुळेच कंपनी त्यांना प्रमोशन देऊ इच्छित आहे..”

सर्वांनी टाळ्या वाजवल्या आणि आरोहीचा जीव भांड्यात पडला.
सर्वजण पार्टीत एन्जॉय करत होते. आरोहीचं अभिनंदन करत होते. बुफे जेवणासाठी जेवण वाढायला गेली असता जवळच एक स्टाफ मधला ग्रुप जेवत होता, त्यांचं बोलणं आरोहीच्या कानावर पडलं..
“बॉस आहे म्हणून काहीही announcement करायची..केव्हाही, कशीही..याची फाईल लपवून याला चांगलीच अद्दल घडवणार होतो पण काय चमत्कार झाला कुणास ठाऊक..”
आरोहीला ऐकून धक्काच बसला. मानव सरांच्या ऑफिसमध्येही त्यांचे हितशत्रू आहेत हे तिला समजलं. मानव सरांनी इतक्या कष्टाने उभा केलेला व्यवसाय अशा लोकांच्या तावडीत नको सापडायला म्हणून तिने स्वतः या गोष्टीची गपचूप शहानिशा करायची ठरवली.
पुढे एका डील साठी मानव सर आणि तो ग्रुप हरयाणाला जाणार होता. तिला जेव्हा हे समजलं तेव्हा तिने मानव सरांना सांगितलं की ती लोकं काय म्हणत होती. मानव सरांचा विश्वास बसत नव्हता, पण आरोही ते पुराव्यानिशी सिद्ध करेल असं आश्वासन तिने दिलं. Deal साठी हरयाणाला त्या ग्रुप सोबत जाणं मानवला रिस्की वाटू लागलं, त्याने आरोहीला याबाबत विचारणा केली..
आरोहीला तर घरची परवानगी काढून जाणं शक्यच नव्हतं. 3 दिवसाची टूर होती. कसं राहणार एकट्या माणसासोबत?
केतकीने तिला समजावलं,
